S Karlson

Could someone help me locate my mormor's father and mother?  I have found them coming to the USA in 1906 through Ellis Island, but the ship list shows that they are coming back home to their residence in Chicago.  This leads me to believe that this is their second time over, because the 1930 US census states that they became citizens around 1901 and 1902 (perhaps right near their first trip over).  It also states that they were married around 1901 and 1902, but I am not sure if it was in the US or in Sweden. I am currently trying to locate a marriage record/license here in Chicago.

My grandmother said they came from I believe Småland.  But I am not sure.

I know this is limited information.  But maybe it is a good start...

Hans,

Thank you but I am guessing that your Anna isn't the same as my Anna, unless your Anna was a Rask by marriage.  My Anna married Gustaf or Gust and I am not sure what her maiden name was.  I will have to dig further in family records... unless some one else is able to find Gust's birth or  emigration records which can lead to more clues...

Thanks  Steve

Emigranten CD has four Gust* Rask, only two of them with ages that might fit with a birth year around 1876:

Name: GUSTAF ADOLF RASK, Age: 23, Parish: VÄRING, County: R (Skaraborg), Port: GÖTEBORG, DATE: 1902-04-11, Destination: CHICAGO ILL, Fellows: NEJ (alone), Source code: 69:422:1071

Name: GUSTEN, Head of group: RASK C A Age: 8, Parish: MÖRLUNDA, County: H (Kalmar), Port: GÖTEBORG, DATE: 1883-08-03, Destination: CHICAGO ILL, Source code: 23:121:32057

Travelling with C A RASK age 48, LOVISA age 50, ELOF age 10, and THEOPILUS age 4.

There are no suitable G* or A* Rask in 1905-1906. (There is one Gunnar and one Anna Brita, but their ages are wrong)

So perhaps the emigrated under different names? Or via another country?

I found yesterday that Anna is Anna Freborg.  Maybe this will help.  Her birth year is still 1875 or 1876.

Thank you for your help so far.  I believe that Gustaf Adolf is my grandmother's father.  I seem to remember her saying the name Adolf, but I don't have it written.

The above Gustaf Adolf is most likely my great grandfather.  Can anyone help locate his birthplace?  It may be Väring, but I am unsure.

Anna's full name is Anna Sophia Freborg.  I may have found her coming to America at age 17, and alone.  The ship list doesn't say a parish name.

Any help would be wonderful!

Lena,

The passenger list I see says April  26, 1892 for an Anna Freberg going to NY from Bremen.  It says she is 17 and it looks as though she is travelling alone.

Does the righting above Axel's name indicated what troop # or location he served as a soldier?

THANK YOU for your help,

To view the manifest for Anna Freberd you go to www.jewishgen.org Scroll down to HOSTED ORGANIZATION.  Once that is done   Scroll down to the 3rd link / ELLIS ISLAND DATABASE.  Then scroll down to the 5th link and click on / MISSING MANIFESTS. At the bottom of your screen you'll see a tool bar.   At the Left magnify to 0.7. Adjust to Series M237   After that is done on the same tool bar you'll see ROLL and FRAME, on the roll you adjust the number to 586.  And the frame to  505.

Is this your family in census 1920 from Chicago, Cook, Illinois?

Jan Ek (Janek)

I think it is of great importance to sort the facts from US out, before making definite connections with their Swedish past. You must also try to establish their exact birthdates, can't you find their respective death certificate? Without that important information it's impossible to confirm later you made the correct connection with the Swedish records. In the state of Illinois genealogical copies of certificates older than 20 years are available without restrictions.

Based on the facts given so far, I believe I found the couple first time in the 1910 census. Living at 6639 May St in Chicago: Gustave Rask (indexed as Resk) 32, Married to Anna 32. Here the immigration year is set to 1903 for both. At the same time it's said they have been married for 5 years, so this strongly indicates they arrived independently and married around 1905. Gustave is Laborer, Cement work, and their status is Alien.(Source: ED 1371, p 19B, line 53-54)

1920 I believe the couple is found at 5740 Morgan St:
Gust Rask 44, wife Anna 47. He is Cement Worker, Contracted. I guess from the names of the parents, and their daughter Hilda 4? year you can trust this is the correct match. In the houshold also Gustavs brother Carl 35 y is found. He is Wathchman, General Store, and it looks like his immigration year is 1911. All three immigrants have the status as aliens.(Source: ED 1884, p 7A. lines 29-32)

1930 the family lives at 5871 Aberdeen st, they own their house valued at $3000, and they have radio. Gustaf 53, Anna 54, and he is Laborer, Building Construction. Here their immigration years are 1902 for Gustaf and 1901 for Anna. They are still not citizens, but they have sent in their papers, so the process to get citizenship is started. (Btw, you can't get citizenship earlier than 7 years after immigration.) Their marriage was around 1905, and their daughter Hilda is now 14 years old. (Source ED 608, p 14 A, lines 27-29)

Unfortunately the ages and years are not consistant through the three records. The ages are off, and also the immigration years, but these are numbers frequently wrong in census. I guess they both immigrated around 1902, +/- a year or two, and I do believe it is the correct family.

Jan Ek (Janek)

As a help to find their respective death certificates you can take a look at the free Illinois Death index 1916-50. Unless you are sure your age estimates are correct, I think these are very good candidates:

RASK   CUSTAF
Y-70
#0027243
1949-07-18 COOK

RASK   ANNA   S
Y-76
#6017521
1949-06-10 COOK

As you can see the ages given at time of death match the census record from 1920. It also suggests Anna had a middle name that could have been Sofia.

I also think this is a good candidate for brother Carl (Charles):

RASK   KARL  A
Y-64
#6056258
1950-08-04 COOK

All three certificates should be easy to check, and could also have parents names entered if the informant knew them.

I think these obituaries confirm my assumptions:

1949-06-13
Chicago Tribune (IL)

RASK
Anna Sofia Rask, beloved wife of Gustaf A., loving mother of Mrs. Hilder E. Swanson, fond sister of Andrew Freborg, and Mrs. Alma Franks, devoted grandmother of Joyce Ann Swanson. Resting at chapel, 851 E. 75th street. Service 3 p.m. Monday. Interment Oak Hill.

---------------------

1949-07-20
Chicago Tribune (IL)

RASK
Gustaf A. Rask, beloved husband of the late Anna, loving father of Mrs. Hilder E. Swanson, fond brother of Carl A., devoted grandfather of Joyce Ann Swanson. Resting at chapel, 851 E. 75th street. Services 2:30 p.m., Friday Interment Oak Hill.

-----------------------------

Another clipping gives the circumstances:

1949-07-20
Chicago Tribune (IL)

DIES WHILE AT WORK

Gust Rask, 74, of 6727 S. Indiana av., a cement finisher, died, apparently of a heart attack, while working on an addition to the Lincolnwood school. Lincolnwood and Grant sts., Evanston.

-----------------------

This should be brother Carl:

1950-08-06
Chicago Tribune (IL)

RASK
Karl A. Rask, beloved uncle of Mrs. Hilder Swanson, devoted brother of the late Gustaf A. Resting at chapel, 851 E. 75th street. Services Monday, Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. Interment Oak Hill.

---------------------

You get a lot of associated information that should help you to confirm this is indeed the correct people. It also establish Anna Sofia's siblings, Andrew Freborg (Anders Friberg) and Alma (Freborg) Franks, daughter Hilda E. (Rask) Swanson, and granddaughter Joyce Ann.

The obits also suggest brother Carl never married and that Hilda was an only child. An that Gustaf had a middle name A. (Anders/Andrew?)

Jan,

WOW, I appreciate all of your help.   I agree with you and apologize for not sorting this out sooner.  The information I have gathered both from my 88 year grandmother, (Hidla E Swanson), and from my mother, Joyce Ann, was limited.  I also had checked and had the census record that Lena posted above.  This is where I retrieved the information on emigration dates and possible birth years.

I am attempting to piece this together going backwards.  I was unaware of the Illinois database search for death records.  And my luck with other Illinois records for other relatives had not been as successful.

I truly appreciate all of your help.  At this point, I know appoximate birthdates, but I do know syblings names etc.

Gustaf's middle name was Adolf, and according to the 1900 Sweden census above his birthdate was 26 Dec 1878.  With that information I can hopefully go back further.

Thank you again.

Steve,

Glad you found this helpful. Just want to add that if you aren't too far from Cook County Building in Chicago it should be relatively quick to find the marriage certificate from approx 1905. There are usually 5- or 10-year indexes available, to look at. The marriage certificate is interesting, here the couple gives the names of their respective parents, and part from misspellings and possible anglicizing this should be very reliable information.

I guess they will search for you, and everything could be done from a distance. I just like to do things myself, if possible.

(Btw, isn't your grandmother 90 years old? )

Regards, and good luck,
Jan

Lena,

This is positively them.  The one thing my mother said was that Anna Sophia told her daughter Hilda, that Alma wasn't a blood sister.  This would make sense since these records show that Alma is a foster child.

Lena,

I'm confused.  Why is Anna Sophia's name Friberg, when her father's name is Ola Persson?

Wouldn't it then be Anna Sophia Olsson or something similar?   How could she keep Friberg?

Thank you for your help!

Hello Steve,

I found out that there is another researcher for Friberg family. He have left information in DISBYTs database, www.dis.se.

Lena,

Thank you for your help.  I've e-mailed Lars.  We'll see what he says.

Could you help me possibly with another search?  It is listed under a discussion here: http://aforum.genealogi.se/discus/messages/2450/68156.html?1112309905.
I am trying to locate my Great-grandfather's first wife, Hanna Sigrid Elin Wahnström, but I am having little luck.

Thank you if you can,

Steve

It look like you have to do some research in US regarding Hanna if you mean what happened to her.

Lena,

Exactly.  However, I do not know here parents names, or if she had siblings in Sweden who came with her over, or who came over at at different time.  For Hanna, I need more information in order to do a possible search.

For instance, I need to find where she left from in Sweden, etc.

I can then use that background knowledge to shape a more focused search here in the US.

Thanks again if you can,

Steve

Hi Steve,

There's a Hanna Sigrid Elin Wahnström on the 1890 CD. According to the 1890 cd she was a seamstress, who had become a methodist and had left the swedish state church. She was living alone at the following address: Sturen större N:o 2, Katarina rote 13, (Stockholms stad)
