I want to find out where Johan August Andersson came from in Sweden. He was born May 15, 1855(death certificate and census USA 1900)  in Sweden. I believe he was one of 8 or 9 children.According to the 1900 and 1920 US census records he emigrated 1876 or 1877. I do not know his destination. He married Susanna Charlotta Andersdotter in San Diego, California in 1889(wedding certificate) and their 5 children were born in Salt lake City, Utah between 1890 and 1900. They moved to Oregon  about 1906 and farmed near Portland. He and his wife died there. He may have been born in a small village called Mossebo but I have have had no luck confirming this.I would also like to know his destination when emigrating.

There is a possible person on the Emigrant-CD:
Johan August Andersson, from Vårdnäs parish in Östergötland emigrated 7 April 1876, destination Galva. He was 20 years old.
Look in the church records for Vårdnäs parish to see if he was born 15 May 1855.

I have checked the Vardsnas parish records and this does not seem to be the person. I did not say that his father's name, written on August's death certificate, was Nels Landeen. His mother was listed as Margaretta. Johan August changed his name to August John Landeen when coming to USA. Maybe his father came to the US and changed his name also. Would it help to look up a Johan August Nelsson or Nilsson who left Sweden for USA in 1876 or 1877?

Hi Ishbel!
There is a small place (village) called Mossebo in the province of Småland. It\s in Mörlunda parish, county of Kalmar.
Try Anbytarforum: Landskap: Småland: Socknar: Mörlunda. It´s okey to write in English there too.
Regards Vanja.

Johan August Andersson born May15,1855 may not have been born in Mossebo he may only have had friends or family there in 1910.He emigrated to USA 1876 or 1877. I'm still looking.

Ishbel! Johan August Andersson can not possibly have a father named Nils Landeen. He must be a stepfather.

Carl:I agree it doesn't make sense. I didn't think of a stepfather. Thanks.
The American recorder for the death certificate may have just assumed his father's last name would be Landeen. I probably should also look for a Johan August Nelsson or Nilsson born May 15,1855 who arrived in America 1876 or 1877.

Tobias:The only additional emigration information I have is from another US census (1910)which says August emigrated in 1878. I now have 3 dates. August was a carpenter in San Diego and a carpenter, then a farmer in Oregon. He may have lived in San Franscisco, California as one person in the family thinks he met his wife there.I do not know where he first arrived in the USA or where he lived till his marriage in 1889.I do not know if he was ever married before he went to the USA..
Have you any idea when August and John emigrated? Was the son born in 185*. When was the father born?
Are you in the USA?I am in Canada. Where did your August and John live in the USA?
I would like to look into this more.

Hej Carina,

This is the only person even close to your description on CD Emigranten, but she wasn't born in 1881 and she didn't emigrate after 1906.

I checked the Ellis Island site too.

I don't see any matches. (I searched for first name starting with H and last name starting with Skog because this site has many mistakes in transcribing names.)

There were many ports in the U.S. and New York (Ellis Island) was the busiest one. It is the only one which is online right now.

I have a partial membership to www.ancestry.com and I didn't find anyone suitable listed.I also checked www.familysearch.org and she was not listed in that database either. (I only searched for births in 1881.)

I didn't find her in the Minnesota Death Index either, but of course she probably married and changed her name. A birthdate might help someone find her.A birth year isn't as helpful.

Do you have more information on this person?

August J.Landeen applied for US citizenship using the name Landin in Indiana, Oct.11,1880.He arrived in New York,June 18,1878.(A kind researcher in Indiana located this application for me on the bases of information I received from my family)

I have much information that suggests that Jonas August Nilsson of Sweden who emigrated from Denmark in 1878 destination LaFayette,Indiana,is also August J.Landeen.

Jonas's registration was June 1, 1878. This Danish emigration information was found in the Danish Emigration Archive Database.

I am still looking for for proof that these two are the same person.

Ishbel:  Does that wedding certificate show a church name where the marriage took place?  If so, I could make a check at Swenson and we might just find some link to Sweden.  The big gap between immigration in 1876-77 and marriage in 1889 is a real problem but perhaps San Diego was his destination.

Chuck: The copy of the cerificate I have from San Diego is a marriage license and certificate. This must be a new format as my family in Oregon have a totally different certificate. Mine states that John A. Atken, Superior Judge married August Landeen and Charlotte Anderson March 7,1889. I presume that there was no church involved.

I have now received the copy of the document where he states his intention to become a US citizen. This gives us his arrival date in New York as June 18, 1878. The document was signed in Tippecanoe Circuit Court,Indiana, Oct.11,1880.using the name August Landin.

Thank you for your kind offer of assistance. I do not have any information about August's church affiliation in the USA. His wife Charlotta was a member of a Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon after 1906.The Svenson Center gave me this information some time ago before I had any information dated before 1889 in San Diego. The exception was that I did know that August and his wife were from somewhere in Sweden.
