Prof Samuel is a new one to me. Our Prof was Ewald Benedictus, who had a lawyer brother Samuel. I wonder if this is he???? Or it could be the Samuel Samuelsson mentioned above.

I am desperately trying to establish a family link between the information to hand of Anders Stockenstrom and Andries Stockenstroom and between Samuel Samuelsson Ziervogel.     Any assistance and interpretation of above would be greatly appreciated.

It would be much appreciated if anyone can enlighten me with any details regarding Andries Stockström.  I believe that he may have been born in Sweden (Filipstad) on about 6 January 1757.    Any family history would be welcomed.

Hi, I too have a number of Ziervogels in our family history.   Our great grandmother Sara Susanna Ziervogel was married to Hendrik Willem van Breda in South Africa and in fact the Ziervogels were very influential in South Africa.    i am sure that the families are related as all the details seem to be the same.  Any further information on this family would be appreciated.

Thank you Arne and Elizabeth for all the information.
As a matter of interest Elizabeth, my husband's great grandmother was Sara Susanna Ziervogel daughter of Carl Frederick Ziervogel and Annie Elizabeth Ritchie who married Hendrik Willem van Breda and had three children.   Sara had three children to van Breda and later when he died she married Thomas Henry Brown to whom she had another 10 children. All these are in the Cape in South Africa.
If there is any further information which you can give regarding the Ziervogels in Sweden, it would be much appreciated.  I have only just found this string of relatives in the long search in completing our family tree.

It would be much appreciated if anyone could let me have any information on the ancesters of Carl Frederick Ziervogel who was born in 1825. The Ziervogel's were apparently very influential in South Africa but it is thought that they were originally from Sweden.  There was also a Carel Ewald Ziervogel who, in about 1793 was a lawyer, furthermore, a Ewald Benedictus drew a map of the world for a school atlas in 1758.  All this is rather sketchy but any information would be greatly appreciated.

Archive - General questions / VIKING ERA to ANDERS JONASSON
« skrivet: 2009-03-04, 11:33 »
This is quite a shot in the dark to say the least.   The first generation which I have established in our family history is that of Anders Jonasson who was born in 1747.  He married Maria Johansdotter who was born in 1756 in Muggarp Margaretagard.  The family moved to Klackenhult in Karltorp Parish in 1793.
Anders and Maria had three children Catharina born in 1774, a second child Catharina born in 1779 and Jonas Anderson (Qvist) born on 23 May 1785.  All were born in Skiro(o) Parish.
I have been told that our previous ancestors originated in Norway and were in fact connected to the Viking era.  I am not too sure how this would come about but I would be interested to know whether there is any earlier ancestors than Anders Jonasson on record and how would I be able to check which generation originated from Norway.   It is rather difficult to rationalise how this information, if correct, falls into place in our line of family history.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Rose

Hi Maxine,
I do not know whether you are looking for these people.   In our family history we have a Catharina Andersdotter born 1779 in Skiro Parish. Father's name is Anders Jonasson born 1747 and mother Maria Johansdotter born 1756 Muggarp Margaretagard.  I am not sure that these will be of interest to you.

Thank you Christina for your information.   Much appreciated.

I was wondering whether any information is available regarding the war if any, in which Johan may have participated.  The details which I have regarding this soldier who enlisted in May 1835 is that the Regement was : Skaraborgs Regemente; Company Sodra Vedbo; Parish : Karlstorp; File Marholma; Croft name: Hagtorpet.     I am particularly interested in any war service if any.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I wish to place on record the information which I have been able to obtain regarding our Grandfather also known as Harry.   I have been researching Harry for some time now and have had an awful amount of assistance from members of Anbytarforum so I felt that I should make known facts which I have.
According to Anders Isberg, Archivist, at Landsarkivet-lund.ra.se: notes registered in the parish register of Maria Magdalena in Stockholm Bror Emil Hjalmar Enstrom enrolled at the Shipping Office in Landskrona on 12 June 1889 - 1891 (DI d:12 1889 page 35 and 1891 page 35; 1892 - 1894 DI a:13m 1893 page 18) and 1887 - 1913 (Di d:4 page 83 and removed from the enrolment lists in 1901.
Enrolled as a deck boy at the Brig Galathea from Nyham, Höganäs.    Enrolled at the Brig Galathea 12 June 1889 and sailed from Landskrona to Port Natal in South Africa by Sundsvall.   Enrolled 29 May 1891 as a deck boy at the Schooner Oskar from Råå, Helsingborg.  The schooner Oskar sailed from Landskrona to L?beck in Germany.  Enrolled 6 May 1893 as a seaman at the Ship Beda from Landskrona which sailed from Landskrona to Canada.
I do not know when Harry actually left Sweden, however, he was naturalised as a British Citizen and enlisted and seconded to Bethune's Mounted Infantry (a volunteer unit raised in Durban in South Africa) in October 1899 for service with the British Imperial Forces participating in the Anglo Boer War.

Sadly on the 29th May 1900 at Scheepers Nek when in action he received gunshot wounds, one entered the right chest, another entered behind the left shoulder and he was also wounded in the right buttock.  He was then taken Prisoner of War and in the U.K. Times Newspaper he was listed with names of other prisoners who were handed back to the British by the Boers on the 21st July 1900 under a flag of truce.

He was then admitted to the General Hospital in Howick, Natal South Africa on the 7th October 1900 and an extract from the Admission and Discharge Book of ss Formosa Hospital at Sea dated 13 Jan 1901 showed he was en route to England and on the 17 Jan 1901 was admitted to Woolwich Hospital.  He was discharged on the 17th May 1901.

On the 24th June 1901 he was recommended for discharge from the forces and was discharged on the 29 July 1901 due to his disability being noted as permanent.

He then returned to South Africa where on the 2 July 1904 he married Hilda Kanjela Von Breda, they had five children: Emil Leonard, Erik Stanley, Wallace Vivian, John Harold and Edith Winifred.

He died on the 23rd June 1932 in Addington Hospital, Durban, South Africa from Myocardial failure at age 59 years.

He married Terese Eliza Fuller who died on 26 May 1920 and they had one child Gladys Enstrom.
He then married Annie Constance Kettley.  They had 3 children, Constance Gwendoline Enstrom born on the 16 May 1922; Alma Mary Enstrom born on the 23 Apr 1925; and Elizabeth Pearl Enstrom born on 28 November 1928.

Hi Christina,
Many, many thanks for your information regarding the family history.  I have today also sent you a summary of the life of our Grandfather, Harry as he was known.
Furthermore, with regard to Frans Josef, I did find that he migrated to the Cape in South Africa where he married and had three children.  To date have not been able to locate his descendants but I do have a copy of his death notice as well as that of his wife Theresa.
All this is just so exciting and the long years of research has been so rewarding.

Hi Mats,
Yes, I cannot work out where the Toot family got their information from.   From the information given by Christina (previous message) the original family which I had on our records was correct.   I rechecked Toot Family Tree where they definately show Emma's parents as Johan Enstrom and Anna L Danielsdotter which in fact is the information which I had regarding our family Emma.   I am patiently waiting for Christina to assist and help with my research.
I am not sure whether the Toot Family have somehow merged the wrong Emma into their tree.  It is possible albeit the third generation from their Emma is still living.  It is not hard to do as we have been struggling to piece the family together for some years now and one is inclined to grab at straws.
I really do appreciate all the trouble you have gone to in providing the information above, and who knows, they may still fit into the picture.
Do you know that approximately two years ago my husband did not even know his biological Mother's name nor his Grandfather's name which was rather sad.   Now, after 51 years of marriage, we have this yearn to find out more and more about the family which we never knew and this is, to date, proving very interesting especially with the assistance of people like yourself who have gone to so much trouble to assist.  One thing is for sure and that is at least our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will know something about their heritage and their Swedish Ancestry.
Once again thank you very much

Hi Christina,
Thank you very much for your positive information regarding Emma.   It seems as though there is a huge misunderstanding about our Emma.  Would you kindly confirm whether in fact Emma Gustafva Enstrom, married to Axel Karlsson is in fact a sister to our Great Grandfather Jonas Peter, Maria Christina Borb and Carl Johan Enstrom.  Our Grandfather was Bror Emil Hjalmar Enstrom who was the son of Jonas.
If your Emma is in fact my husband's Great Grand Aunt, would you be kind enough to assist us in sorting this out and also if it is, maybe any information which you can give in order to put our records straight.
I really appreciate the information which you have provided and now feel that maybe somehow we have had all the wrong information over the past couple of years.
Most sincerely,
Rose

« skrivet: 2008-07-08, 01:02 »
Thank you all for your information.   This Edd seems to be confusing as is the family information.  According to the Toot Family Tree located in Ancestry.com Edd Enstrom born about 1877 in Sweden is partnered/married to Emma Gustafva Enstrom born 12 Oct 1949 in Ekenas Malilla.  Listed in the New York Passenger Lists 1820 to 1957, Emma is shown as the Grandmother of Gustava Karlsson.   The information which I have to date is according to the 1890 Swedish Census she is married to Axel G Karlsson and has three children, Mathilda, Joseph and Emma M.  She then must have migrated to US as she is shown on the 1900 US Census Place: Norway, Wright, Iowa.
The Toot Family Tree shows that her father is Johan Enstrom and Mother Anna L Danielsdotter which is the correct information which I have, hence I assumed that she was the correct person.   The tree then shows that Edd Enstrom and Emma have one child Francis Mildred born about 1905 in Chicago, Illinois. Francis married Robert Lee and had a child Ronald Lee.
My mind somehow tells me that the child Francis would have been born when Emma was about 56 years old? Her daughter Emma Karlsson who was born in 1892 also does not fit as she would only have been 13 years old? So I do not think that the Emmas were mixed up.
Furthermore, I am not sure whether Emma married Edd Enstrom or whether she reverted to her maiden name of Enstrom.  It seems coincidental that they should both be Enstrom, that is why I am searching for his family.  Surely they were not related???????
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Rosalie.

The 1900 Census does state that Emma arrived in 1880 which I am wondering is a misprint as she had her daughter Emma Karlsson in Sweden in 1892.

Thank you very much Elisabeth.  I have emailed Regional Archives at Lund and trust that I will receive the information which I require.  Many thanks for your assistance.

I am still trying to track any information regarding the time or place when our Grandfather Bror Emil Hjalmar Enstrom (also known as Harry) actually left Sweden.   There is a period in his life late 1890's which we cannot account for.   Information in this regard would be most appreciated.

I would be interested in receiving information regarding the parents and family of the above.   I believe that he was born in 1877 (I do not know which part of Sweden) and must have migrated to US as he is shown in the 1900 US Federal Census in Norway, Wright, Iowa.

I further have information that he was the partner/husband of Emma Gustafva Enstrom who according to my records was married to Axel Karlsson with whom she had three children.   I am not sure whether she in fact married Edd Enstrom who coincidentally had the same name as her maiden name or whether she reverted to her maiden name when she too migrated.   Edd and Emma had one child in US by the name of Francis Mildred.  Edd would have been twenty eight years younger than Emma.  If possible, would it be possible to find out whether Emma divorced Axel Karlsson or did he pass away.

Any assistance in this enquiry would be very much appreciated.

Dear Bosse,
Thank you for this information.  Excuse my ignorance but does it mean that the surname Enstrom would not be used if the man is a soldier and the name Qvist would be used instead. It appears that the Johan born 4th May 1815 was the great great grandfather of my husband or the grandfather of our grandfather Bror Emil Hjalmar Enstrom.
If you are able to give me any further information in this regard it would be much appreciated.

I am becoming very confused in trying to establish how this man fitted into the family. I did not know that he was a sailor, however, the missing part may be relevant.
The person I am trying to find was a caretaker of Rentzkies Farm 1919 to 1928 in South Africa.
In 1889 our grandfather enlisted with the British in Durban South Africa to fight in the Boer War.  His original occupation was that of a sailor.   I cannot help but wonder whether they were related and actually migrated to South Africa during their duties as sailors.  Our Harry was born in 1873 so they may have been related in some way only a few years apart in age?????????
Many thanks,  I will keep searching.

« skrivet: 2007-05-05, 12:40 »
Monica thank you very much for your information.  I have been trying to work out our grandfather's sailing history.   Our father always told us that Harry worked on the whaling ships but we have not been able to establish this.  According to the 1890 and 1900 Census he was classified as a sailor so we were wondering whether it could have been on a whaling vessel.  Pity we cannot ask him ourselves.  Once again, thank you

Archive - General questions / 1890 Census question
« skrivet: 2007-04-15, 10:51 »
Elisabeth, yes you are correct.  Bethunes Mounted Infantry was established in Durban in October 1899.   Harry, as our Grandfather was known, was involved in the skirmish at Scheepers Nek in May 1900 and I have all his medical records commencing 7th October, 1900 in the Howick General Hospital in Natal. In fact I assume that he was taken prisoner of war by the Boers as a newspaper article of July 1900 states that he was handed back to the British under a flag of Truce at Newcastle.   He was subsequently transferred by ship to England for further medical treatment and in the 190l English Census he was in the Herbert Hospital.  He was discharged some time later and returned to South Africa, Durban where he married and lived until his death in 1932 at the age of 59 years. (Myocardial failure).

This was why I could not understand that he would be on the Swedish Census in 1900.

I only wish that I can find out when he actually left Sweden and how, so that I can complete the picture.

Thank you for all your assistance,
Sincerely,
Rose.

Archive - General questions / 1890 Census question
« skrivet: 2007-04-15, 00:32 »
Elisabeth, thank you very much for this information.   I was trying to follow the whereabouts of our Grandfather Bror Enstrom.   We know that he fought in the Boer War in South Africa and was wounded at Scheepers Nek on the 20th May, 1900.

What I was having trouble in understanding was how he was listed on the Census of 1900.   If that was done early in 1900, e.g. January/February or so, then he had probably only gone to South Africa after this date.  Things are a little confusing for me at present, but all the information which I receive from good folk like yourself, is helping me to piece the life of our Grandfather together.

I don't want my children to sit and wonder where they originated from and I would sincerely hope to be able to hand to them the history of the family which forms their Swedish heritage.
Once again,
Many thanks
Rose

Could someone help me please.  I understand that our grandfather Bros Emil Hjalmar Enstrom was listed as a sailor in 1890.   We were led to believe that he was involved in the whaling industry and were wondering whether he was a sailor on one of the vessels involved in whaling. We do know that he then went to South Africa to enlist in the Boer War in 1889 on the British side but are anxious to clear up whether he was in fact on the whaling boats before this.
Any information on this industry in Sweden would be appreciated.
