i was able to visit Karvela and kurejoki.
in kurejoki, a local directed me to a home.. the man there pointed out the Antilla farm to me...  they had all left by the 1950's..
how wonderful.
i hope Finland never changes.
Much like northern Minnesota where i am from... lakes, woods, etc.   i should have brought my fishing gear and done some pike fishing!

Finland was so clean, quiet, orderly, peaceful.
felt like 'home'..

thanks everyone for your help!   i enjoyed my visit.

thomas,
thanks for all that information..
let me try to contact my father to verify the siblings..

i had the siblings listed as:

Per Oscar, Charles, Eric, and a sister Anna

from your list, 'Anton' is curious... because Gerta had a son named William Anton Norlander... born i believe, in 1920...

just want to make sure before i give someone a phone call.
thanks.
( i did get your email. )

thank you.
is there any information on Gerda's emigration?   when/where?
siblings?

i assume she emigrated to Duluth Minnesota or Superior Wisconsin...  and met Olaf Einar there?
Einar homesteaded north of Two Harbors, Minnesota... very remote area..    his homestead still stands.

being so far from Torhult to Frano, i can't believe Gerda and Olaf knew each other in Sweden.

thanks so much!

Stefan Nyman:     you have a winner!  that is my great grandfather's head stone.    looks like he was born in 9/12/1849.   We had an Anttila reunion 20 years ago near Maple, Wisconsin and we all drove over to the cemetery.

(Henri spent some time in Duluth, MN before finding homestead land near Maple, Wisconsin.. virgin pine.   A large timber company came through the area and bought timber rights from most of the homesteaders..  providing them the $ to start their lives..  Henri had a dairy and hay operation.  )

Henri was born in Vaasa... is that where he emigrated from?   and what of his wife Maria?    was she from Vaasa also?

thank everyone for their time on this.. very much appreciated!   I am travelling to the area in three weeks after waiting a lifetime to come!

i grew up in Two Harbors, Minnesota... i grew up with many kids of Finnish descent.     Many communities in Northeast Minnesota had large Finnish populations.. i live in Orono.. near Minneapolis now... many Finns just west of here... Dassel, Cokato, area.

Does anyone have information on Henri ( Henry ) Antilla who emigrated from Finland around 1890.
He arrived in Duluth, Minnesota / Superior, Wisconsin and homesteaded near Maple, Wisconsin.
He is buried in a Finnish cemetery just out of Maple, Wisconsin.

I am his great grandson and am planning a trip to Finland in two weeks.
Would be nice to visit his hometown.

thank you.

Per,

thanks for the information... of course i have more questions.

1.) Olof Einar..   his wife was Gerda Marie... born 10/13/1887 in Gullabo-Smaland?   can you confirm?
when i see gullabo-smaland on google maps, there is literally nothing there but trees.   i assume they lived on a farm?.. or were loggers?   where would i go in gullabo-smaland to find an address or more information?  a church?

2.) when in gudmundra... or anywhere else... where do i find records?   churches?   so i just walk into a church and ask to see emigration records?

3.) my mothers side is Finnish.   my great-grandfather was Henri ( Henry ) Antilla... immigrated to Superior Wisconsin, USA appx 1888.  do you know a Finnish site as informative as this site?   i'm driving all the way around the Gulf of Bothnia into Finland ( at least that is the plan ) so i'd like to explore my roots there also.

Thanks for you time and efforts... much appreciated!

seems like good research.. can anyone confirm this research?    seems like i need to make my way to Frano and Gudmundra?
also, does anyone know if there is a Finnish site?  my mother's side came from there.

thanks in advance.
been looking forward to this for 30 years.

i posted this 10 years ago..
i never made it to Sweden..
but i am now coming in October and would like to visit the town from which my great grandfather came from.
here is my post from 2006:

We are coming to Sweden in a week!! and are desperate to find the farm/village/province where my father's family came from...

My greatgrandfather Einar Nordlander immigrated to Duluth, Minnesota, USA around 1910 from Sweden along with is two sisters Signe and Helga and his brother John. After they arrived in the USA, they changed their surname to Norlander.
Einar Norlander, (with new surname), married Gerda Erickson/Ericson?) in Duluth. Gerda had three brothers, Per Oscar, Charles and Eric and a sister Anna. Gerda Norlander died in Duluth approximately 1966.

Does anyone know of the village/town/province where they came from?? thanks!
