Dear all,

I am looking for data to verify the existence
of an officer of the swedish army in the 30 years
war named SYREN, even more to verify his
participance in battle in Eastern Westfalia,
Germany, abt 1646.
Where can I turn to?

Does anyone do genealogical research on SYREN?
How may I contact him/her?

I do get constant bounce backs from
krigsarkivet@krigsarkivet.ra.se
Does onyone have a valid mail address?

Today there is one officer HAKAN SYREN.
I am tempted to ask him, he might be member of
a 400 year old soldier family.
How may I contact him?

I found ZIREN in the swedish phone book.
Are they descendants of SYREN
(just like German ZIEREN are of German SYREN/SIEREN)?

Thank you,

Dear all,

searching this board for SYREN I found the following entry:

Enligt SCB finns det (31/12 2002) elva kvinnor i Sverige som heter Syrenia. Ingen har det som tilltalsnamn.
Det finns fyra män med förnamnet Syr?n/Syren - dock inte som tilltalsnamn.

Please translate.
Thank you very much,

Translation:

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics in Sweden, there are (on December 31, 2002) eleven women in Sweden had the given name Syrenia. None of them has it as a first name. There are four men with the given name Syr?n or Syren, but none of them has it as a first name.

As syren is the flower lilac, these given names may have become popular in the 19th century when many girls were given different flower names (especially in the upper classes).

The Central Soldiers Register, which isn't complete, lists a handful Syren soldiers from the 18th and 19th century. Note that Swedish soldiers with the same military name and from the same area still often weren't related, as the military would often assign the same name to a soldier's successor, whether they were related or not.

Håkan Syr?n is the Swedish commander-in-chief. He might just not have time to answer your questions!

It would be easier all round if you gave us the full names and whatever details you have of the person you are researching. He might be somebody?s ancestor.

Hello,

thank you for the translation.

Yeah, I dismissed this idea already.

As sad as it is, I don?t even have evidence of
this person?s existence, it could be a family
myth:
Major SYREN, 30 years? war, lost one leg in
battle, stayed in or around the city of Marsberg,
Eastern Westfalia, Germany.

That?s as much as I have.

> He might be somebody?s ancestor.
I?m hoping for this to be the case and would be
glad to get into contact with anyone doing
genealogical research on swedish SYREN.

Kind regards,

Some Scandinavians in Wisconsin changed the spelling of their town from Syren to Siren.
http://www.sirenwis.com/
A Finn in Montreal had for many years a ski shop: Siren's Ski Shop down on Rue St. Antoine. It's a strong guess, but his name may have in fact been Syren. He had daughters and they may still be around. I'll check into this longshot for any information about Syren as a surname.

Hello Martin,

I would like to suggest that you search under Länder/Countries. There you can find Tyskland/Germany. On the side you can find links to sites interesting for German genealogy. There is a group of ancestors that have speciell bounds to Germany and they have formed a group called the G group .Their adress is www.g-gruppen.net
