Hello,
I am searching for information about my great grandmother, Ulla Hansdotter Hammarstrom.  The information I have tells me that she was born in Feb 1870 in Ramsele, Vasterbotten, Sweden and the year my grandfather was born, 1896, she was an unmarried maid.  My grandfather is Carl Axel Hammarstrom, born May 1, 1896 in the Parish of Adolf Fredrik, Stockholm and on 26 May 1896 he was placed in a public orphanage.  In October of that year he went to live with a foster family, crofter Petter Olaus Jonsson and Matilda Petersdotter in Heljaro Estates, Jamjo, Karlskrona, Blekinge, Sweden.  As far as I know he was raised by that family and immigrated to America in about 1920-22.  Since my grandparents never talked about their past I was fortunate to receive this information when I contacted an agency in Sweden, but I would love to learn more about Ulla and her life.  Thank you very much for any information you can share to help shed light on this family mystery.  My Dad is gone 2 years now and he knew nothing of this...... fortunately I received what little info I have before he died and was able to share it with him.  I look forward to hearing something.......

The foster father is recorded as Peter Olaus Jonasson at Heljarum in Jämjö parish (Bllekinge).

I don't find Ulla born 1870 in Ramsele in the Swedish Death Index 1901-2009, but that is not complete before 1947, or perhaps she emigrated.

In the Stockholm rotemansarkiv she is recorded 1897-1900 as Ulla Hansdotter Hammarström, born 1870-02-29 in Ramsele, unmarried without family.

Oh my goodness, tack så mycket, mahalo nui loa, thank you very much!!!!  This is wonderful information!  I do have some other questions, if you don't mind ...... it seems like people had different names, even within families..... where might Ulla have gotten the name Hammarstrom?  Since she is listed as unmarried....... is it possible that she took the last name of her employer in Stockholm?  Family lore was that Farfar (Karl) was born to a wealthy family in Stockholm who were either in the restaurant or jewelry business and that they didn't have the time to raise a child so he was raised by a foster family and that the name Hammarstrom was the foster families name....... now I know that isn't so, but would be interesting to know where Ulla got the name......

In the orphange record from 21 May 1896, she is already called Ulla Hansdotter Hammarström.
 
The son's birth is recorded as Carl Axel born 1 May 1896, father unknown, mother Ulla Hansdotter Hammarström born 1870-02-29. In Gustaf Adolf births in GID 100002.25.61500, [Stockholm] _SCB Stockholms Stad, HIAA.1149, Births, 1896, Image 165.
 
She did not have to have any special reason to take the name Hammarström, before 1901 Swedes could (and did!) take a new surname whenever the wanted, they needed no more reason than liking the new name.

She in not married, it was free for everyone to add a name like this (Hammarström is a name most commonly worn by blacksmiths). 1891-10-23, Ulla moves to Stockholm.

In the last parishrecord I have access to, AI:12b Ramsele p 406 Ovanmo (1894-99), both of her parents are still alive. Her father has now also added the name Hammarström in the parishrecord and her sister Catharina Hansdotter also added the name Hammarström (b 1876).
