I would really appreciate some help with the following record:
Östergötland, Svinstad Husförhör 1873-1878 AI:19, 387.32.58000 page 141.
The family I am interested in begins on line #16.
>#16. Enka. Gustaf (?Carl Jakobsson) Carlsson. Previously this man has always been Gustaf (no middle name) Carlsson,
he was the son of Carl Jacobsson. Is it odd that he is listed here with this longer name?
>#17. His wife (Johanna) Christina Jöhansdotter. She died 10 JAN 1873. What is written under her name?
>#18. His son Carl Gustaf, from his first marriage.
>#19. His son Frans Adolph, also from his first marriage. What is written after his name?

>What is written in the comments column for this family?
I have determined from other sources that when Christina died, Gustaf took her body to Rappestad to be buried.  (355.28.22000, BI:4, page 151) She was born in Vist, as was he.  Any idea about why this was done? Would he have put the casket in a horse wagon and driven it there? How long would that have taken?
Also Carl (in 1874) and Frans (in 1876) went to live with/work for their uncle Carl Magnus Carlsson (their father's brother), and I have not been able to find their father, Gustaf Carlsson, anywhere after this Hfl.  Any ideas?

>Is the boy listed on line #20. part of this family?

I realize this is a lot of questions, any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Kathryn

GID 387.32.58000, [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI.19, Household examination, 1873-1878, page 141, Image 126.

This seems to be a list of people registered in the parish, but living elsewhere.

16. Enkm. (enkmeman = widower) Gust. Carlsson. He lives (or works?) at Harfvestad in Landeryd(??). Perhaps his father's name was written by error, and was corrected to his name.

17. Wife Christina Johansdotter. She died 1873-01-10, died (afled) and buried in Rappestad.

18. This son is hans i föreg. gifte (his in previous marriage), number 19 is presumably the same, number 20 is hennes i föreg. gifte (her in previous marriage), number 21 is med sednare maken (with the later husband).

Notice that number 21, son Fritz Leonard was born 2 months before the marriage.

The wife died in Rappestad, and was not transported there after death.

From cencus 1880:

Carlsson, Gustaf
Sågverksarbetare [saw-mill worker]
b. 1834 in Vist (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
Man, married, father

Persdotter, Anna
b. 1854 in Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
h. [wife]
Woman, married, mother

Fritz Leonard
b. 1869 in Landeryd (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
hans s. [his son]
Man, single, child

Per Olof
b. 1875 in Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
hennes oä. s. [her illeg. son]
Man, single, child

Margaretha
b. 1878 in Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
hennes oä. d. [her illeg daughter]
Girl, child

Qvarstående på socknen skrif. ut. tjänst el. laga försv. u. st. hemv.
Svinstad /Bankekind/ (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
-------------------------------------

Gustaf seems to be the 5th person on the På socknen page, GID 387.34.16100,  [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI.21, Household examination, 1878-1888, page 197, Image 161.

Then lower down on the page, line 15, with the new wife.

Bo -
Thank you so much! This is a ton of new information  ...  unfortunately, that means I also have more questions :-)
Would you guess then, that Gustaf moved around as a railway worker, taking his family with him, and that is why his wife died in Rappestad?  What kind of work would he have been doing?

Then in 1880 he is a sawmill worker! Do I understand that then he is living in Svinstad? What is the translation of the last line you included: Qvarstående på socknen skrif. ut. tjänst el. laga försv. u. st. hemv.

Gustaf worked as a farmhand [dräng] in Vist parish until about 1860, when he moved to Svinstad. I mistakenly presumed he continued to work as a farmhand.  Can you read from the following two records what his occupation really was?
GID 387.17.29300 [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI:14, Husförhör 1855-62, page 55, image 33
GID 387.29.10300 [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI:16, Husförhör 1862-67, page 168, image 25

And one more question please, what is written in the comment line for Gustaf's son Frans in this record:
GID 387.28.7600 [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI:15, Husförhör 1862-67, page 133, image 133

Sincerest thanks,
Kathryn

I think you are correct, the family probably moved around with Gustaf, but where officially residents of Svinstad parish.

Qvarstående på socknen skrif. ut. tjänst el. laga försv. u. st. hemv. means approximately: still registered in the parish, registered without employment or reliable means of support, without fixed place of residence.

1855-1862: statdräng (farm worker paid partly in kind), changed to arbetskarl (worker), Gustaf Carlsson had come 1860 from Vist.

1862-1867: arbetskarl (worker) Gustaf Carlsson living at Hagsätra, moved to the På socknen page 1866.

1862-1867 På socknen: the son Frans Adolf has remark understöd fr. Frim.Logen (support from the Free-mason lodge).

GID 387.34.16100, [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI.21, Household examination, 1878-1888, page 197, Image 161, På Socknen.

Worker Gustaf Carlsson marries 1880-05-30 to Anna Persdotter, who had come 1880 from Undersvik in Gävleborg county, and they move 1883 to Undersvik.

They look like this in 1890:

Karlsson, Gustaf
sågverksarbetare [saw-mill worker]
f. 1834 i Vist (Östergötlands län, Östergötland)
Gift man, far i familjen [married man, father]

Persdotter, Anna
f. 1854 i Arbrå (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
h. [wife]
Gift kvinna, mor i familjen [married woman, mother]

Per Olof
f. 1875 i Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
s.
Ogift man, barn i familjen [unmarried man, child]

Margreta
f. 1878 i Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
d.
Flicka, barn i familjen [girl, child]

Emma Kristina
f. 1881 i Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
d.
Flicka, barn i familjen [girl, child]

Lars Emil
f. 1887 i Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
s.
Pojke, barn i familjen [boy, child]

Hanna Helena
f. 1889 i Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
d.
Flicka, barn i familjen [girl, child]

Djupa
Undersvik (Gävleborgs län, Hälsingland)
-----------------------------------

In the Svinstad 1878-1888 HFL, Emma Kristina is recorded as their daughter, and born 1881-01-30 in Ljusdal.

Bo-
You are a wealth of information!  Thank you most sincerely for all your help,
and for the extra information from the 1890 census.
With this last batch of children I am hoping I might find a descendant with more family information,
especially regarding his first born son who emigrated to Minnesota, USA.
[Carl Gustaf, born in 1858 to Gustaf Carlsson and his first wife, Eva Charlotta Gustafsdotter]

If I may make one final request for this family, can you take a look at these last two records?
Regarding the record GID 387.34.16100 [Östergötland] Svinstad, AI.21, Household examination, 1878-1888, page 197, Image 161, På Socknen  ...   what is written in the comments column?
And the marriage record  GID 100021.50.53700 [Gävleborg] Undersvik, 1880(:701) Marriages, image 4  ...   again, what is written in the comments column?

Tack så mycket, and I'll even stop bothering you for awhile :-)
Kathryn

1878-1888 Svinstad HFL: At the top of the page, middle of line 2, Gustaf Carlsson doesn't seem to have a remark. It looks like there are two remarks on line 2, but they don't seem to be about him.
Below Gustafs name is added his son Per born 1875 and daughter Margareta born 1878, and se nedan (see below).

And the remark on line 15 actually starts on line 14, so I suspect it isn't for Gustaf either, but for farmhand Carl August Johnsson at bottom of line 14.

Marriage 1880 in Undersvik:

Marriage number: 6
Marriage date: 30 May 1880
Groom: Gustaf Carlsson, worker from Svinstad parish, Linköpings län (Östergötland county), born 1834-07-27, 2nd marriage.
Bride: Anna Persdotter, maid in Kyrkbyn number 12, born 1854-07-06.
Remark: married here by H. Bergman, certificate sent to pastor's office in Svinstad 1880-06-12.

Linköping was county capital for Östergötland county, so the county was sometimes called Linköping county.

Bo -

thanks again for all your help  ...
and, h-m-m-m, I wonder why Gustaf didn't claim his previous two marriages,
which makes this one his third not his second?

Perhaps just a misunderstanding, his certificate from Svinstad would have called him a widower, so perhaps it was just assumed this was his 2nd marriage.
