If someone who lived in Varmland died in Gotland,where would his death notice be located  
and would it state the cause of death?

You can usually find a note in the death records of the parish where the death actually occurred. If the deceased was registered as a resident of another parish, a letter was sent to that parish too, so that a corresponding note would be entered in the death records of that parish as well.
 
The cause of death may be recorded in both parishes, although they may differ in detail.
 
In the case of a 19th-century suicide, I found notices about it in the death records of three parishes - one where the suicide took place, one where the deceased was a registered resident, and one where he was buried. The method of suicide was described consistently in all three places, though with differing amount of detail.
