Hej all -

In the discussion “1880 emigration, Samuelson family, Billinge...to Chicago,” several of you helped me pinpoint my family's home in Billinge, Malmöhus and their dates of emigration to the U.S.  However, no one could find exactly where my farfars morfar Samuel Svensson was born (the family records just said Strö, 8 Mar 1817) or who his family were.  Then Hjordis Meijer of the Eslov genealogical society wrote “Samuel is not a very common name, but I found a Samuel born in Skarhults parish, a neigbour parish to Ö. Strö. He was born 1817-08-09, maybe he is the right one.”

Three days later I got another big clue from Arne Thornberg of Billinge:  “The following marriage notice seems to mention the names (and occupation) for the parents of Samuel Svensson:  'Vigsel 1846-11-05 i Bosarp mellan dräng Samuel Svensson, Hjelmaröd och piga Marna Andersdotter, Hjelmaröd.  Han: Afl. Skogränsaren Sven Samuelsson och afl. Elsa Tychasdotter i Strö.'  Translated it should be something like this: ”Marriage 1846-11-05 in Bosarp between farm-hand Samuel Svensson at Hjelmaröd and maid Marna Andersdotter at Hjelmaröd. At his side: The deceased woodsman Sven Samuelsson and deceased Elsa Tychasdotter at Strö.”

Hjordis and Arne, your clues did the trick!  Having stared at many, many pages of Genline kyrkoböcker for Bosarp,  Billinge, and V. Strö till I was blind, but finding nothing, I turned to Skarhult. There in Births, Marriages & Deaths 1756-1861 (GID 1347.21.60600), which includes many records from Strö parish [today's Östra Strö, not Västra Strö] I found Hjordis' record.  I can't read it all, but it definitely shows the birth of a son Samuel to Sven Dyk and Else Tykesdotter on 9 August 1817.  I then re-checked our family records for Samuel and found no source was listed for the 8 March birth date, which cousins had provided.  So I went to Samuel's 1900 U.S. census listing and - voila! - he was born in August 1817, not March, and I had never noticed the discrepancy.

Now after a bit more digging I believe that the Sven Dyk who married Else Tykesdotter [Tykesson in LDS records] and fathered Samuel Svensson was born 19 Dec 1765 at Skarhult to Samuel Nilsson Diik / Duyk / Diijk (b. 6 Aug 1738 at Vodena, Horja, Kristianstad, d. 2 Oct 1815 at Skarhult) and his first wife Matta Henricsson Bandelin (b. 6 Oct 1739 Skarhult, d. 12 Mar 1785 at Skarhult).  Thus his name = Sven Samuelsson Dyk and his grandson, my farfars morfar “Holy Samuel” Svensson who came to America, would be his namesake.  Anyway, that's my theory, but I haven't yet found a marriage record for Sven [Samuelsson] Dyk and Else Tykesdotter to verify it.  My questions are:

(1) Is it possible for someone to read the Skarhult birth record of  Sven [Samuelsson] Dyk and Else Tykesdotter's son Samuel, 9 August 1817, and translate it for me?  I've made a copy from the Genline image which I could e-mail to someone to look at, though the online images are not very good.

(2) Are there any local records that might index the marriage of Sven and Else?

(3) Does anyone have information on the the large Dyk family of Skarhult and Strö (and later Lund and elsewhere)?  I would certainly love to find out more about them.

I'm very excited about all this - especially about discovering it just before our trip to Sweden later this month!

TACK!

Hej Judith,

Saturday 2 Jul I put a question regarding Dyk-relatives at ScanGen, the mailing list for genealogists with an interest in the Swedish provinces Skåne (Scania), Blekinge and Halland.

My question Dyk i Billinge, Bosarp eller Hörja met an overwhelming response. In short the findings were

1) A distant relative of yours (sic!), the genealogical friend of mine and researcher Hjördis Nilsson in Klippan. Her ancestor, Gabriel Jonsson, witnessed the baptizing of your ancestor Samuel [Nilsson Dyk] in 6 Aug 1738 at Hörja parish. (Gabriel Jonsson was brother of Nils Jonsson, who was the father of the baptised Samuel 1738).

2) Hjördis Nilsson asked the professional historian and genealog and specialist of old Hörja parish at the same maillist (ScanGen), Gert Påhlsson, to give information regarding Dyk-relatives at old Hörja. The answer from Gert Påhlsson was overwhelming with many names and Dyk-relatives. A very short summary:

Samuel Nilsson Dyk was baptized at Vedema #3, Hörja parish 6 Aug 1738.
Samuels father: Nils Jonsson, baptized 18 Apr 1714 at Vedema, Hörja parish.
Samuels mother: Elna Svensdotter.
Grandfather: Jon Kierstensson, born abt. 1675 at Ravnahalla, Hörja parish, dead 1742 at Vedema #3, Hörja.
Grandmother:Sigrid Larsdotter, born abt. 1681, dead 1749 at Vedema #3, Hörja parish.
Grandfathers father:Kiersten Jonsson, born abt 1648, dead 1708 at Vedema #3, Hörja. He was farmer at Ravnahalla, Hörja.
Grandfathers mother: Anna Nilsdotter, born abt 1649, dead 1698 at Ravnahalla, Hörja.
Grandmothers father:Lars Dyk, born abt. 1640, dead 1708 at Hörja.

We thank Gert Påhlsson and Hjördis Nilsson for these excellent data. Much of the genealogical data regarding Hörja parish is accessable thru an online database at the following web-address: www.ddss.nu

Judith, I?ll will seperately send you more info regarding your roots at old Hörja parish. BTW, we are deeply impressed that you 'over there' (in the most western part of USA) is so able to do excellent findings in old old Swedish church books by the use of Genline etc. :-)

Ha en bra dag!
