Amber Alford

Im in need of some information???  Im needing someone to point me in right direction.  Back in 1866 our family came to the U.S. from Sweden, also they were on a boat we can't seem to find, that sank before harbor or while in harbor.  The family is FRANZ EDVARD WILHELM AHLFORT and his wife JOHANNA FREDRIKA JOHANSSON he is from Torpa Ostergotland Sweden and she is from Skarlvnda,Malexander,Ostergotland Sweden.

Their children were  Edvard Wllentin Ahlfort, Johanna Mathilda Ahlfort, Alfred Ludwig Ahlfort, Carl Johan Richard Ahlfort, Tore Villhelma Augusta Ahlfort, Axel Edvard Ahlfort, John August Ahlfort and Christina Josephina Ahlfort/Alford.

Frans Edvard Wilhelm Ahlfort, born 24 Sep 1822    in Torpa, Östergotland, was married 26 FEB 1846, in Malexander, Östergotland.
Source: Family search, where also the birth of the children can be found.
Perhaps someone can give the name of the parents of Frans Edvard Wilhelm and find out if he is related to the Ahlfort-family in the area.

Amber, the Alfort family is presented in the book Svenska Släktkalendern of 1995, but the listing there starts with Adolf Michael Alfort, presumably a brother of cousin of your Frans Edvard Wilehelm.

The following children of Frans Edvard Wilhelm Ahlfort and Johanna Fredrika Johansson are rgistred in Family search:
Edvard Wallentin Ahlfort, b 14 FEB 1847   Kopparhult, Ekeby, d 03 JUL 1847
Johanna Mathilda Ahlfort, b 05 JUN 1848   Kopparhult, Ekeby, d 01 OCT 1848
Alfred Ludvig Ahlfort, b 26 OCT 1849   Knippe, Ekeby
Carl Johan Richard Ahlfort, b 11 MAY 1852   Knippe, Ekeby, d 10 SEP 1859
Troe Vilhelmina Augusta Ahlfort, b 02 APR 1855   Knippe, Ekeby
Axel Edvard Ahlfort, b 17 OCT 1857   Knippe, Ekeby
Christina Josephina Ahlfort, b 20 OCT 1860   Elgeberget, Malexander

According to Ridderstad,  Knippe mentioned above, in 1880 belonged to a G. Alfort and in 1910 to his surviving relatives (no names).  Possibly it indicates, relatives lived in Östergötland at that time.

According to the book Ax. Setterdahl, Östgöta Nation i Lund  Gustaf Magnus Ahlfort had a son Frans Edvard, born 1822, who emigrated to America, where his descendants live. Despite the missing third name Wilhelm this most likely is the right person. Gustaf Magnus Ahlfort (1789-1830) was in turn son of Fredrik Göran Ahlfort and Helena Christina Ögnelood, and Fredrik Göran Ahlfort (1754-1823) was son of Gabriel Ahlfort and Anna Brita Wetterström.

Amber,
In his answer above Kjell Holmåker mentions Helena Christina Ögnelood. Perhaps it is interesting to know the Ögnelood family was a noble family and can be found in “The pedigrees of the Swedish noble families” (Svenska adelns ättartavlor) by Gustaf Elgenstierna.

Helena Christina, born 1749-12-15 in Bökelund in Sandviks parish, Jönköpings län, died 1794-08-07 in Hårsholmen in Torpa parish. Married to Georg Fredrik Ahlfort in 1776-09-10 on Stora Tirserum i Tirserums socken, Östergötlands län.

She was a daughter of Jakob Abraham Ögnelood, born 1704-06-01. Sergeant at Jönköpings regiment. Died 1757-08-16 in Mörteryd in Björkö socken, Jönköpings län, and his third wife Anna Maria Lindell.

One can follow the family back as follows:

His father and mother:

Johan Ögnelood, lieutenant, born in Finland 1648, died 1716.
Gertrud Catharina Stierncreutz (noble), born 1668, died 1754-03-16 in Gunnarsgården i Björkö socken, Jönköpings län

His father:

Jakob Tomasson, noble name Ögnelood, Lieutenant, died 1670-09-11 in Kutila, Kalvola parish, Finland.

Amber,

I don't know if you are interested in som older relatives but here they are:

Eric Ahlfort from Torpa parish, was serving from 1675 in the Swedish Royal navy under king Carl XI. He received royal scholarship for overseas studies and was 1700 appointed Captain in the navy. 1708 he resigned from the navy due to injuries he received from battles. Eric was married to Maria Sophia Gyllenståhl (noble) and possessed the Liljeholmen estate. 1723 he applied for nobility to match his wifes staus, but obviously was denied the honour (the application is found in Riksarkivet Sthlm).

1702 a daughter was born, Maria Catharina Ahlfort Gyllenståhl. She fell in love with a peasant on the estate and refused to marry her parents selection despite an existing marriage contract with book keeper Georg Ramberg in Norrköping. Well, she got her will and eventually married her farmer Jonas Andersson and because of that, had to leave her parents estate. After the marriage 1738 Jonas Andersson signed up as a soldier and received the name Ekstrand. They settled down on a small farm in Askeryd.

The couple moved after a few years to the farm Gunnarstorp in Säby parish, where Jonas died 1778 and Maria Catharina 1781. Their oldest son, Carl Fredrik Johnsson inherited the farm, but let it over to one of his sons, Carl Gustaf Fredriksson who was great, great grandfather to Greta Garbo.

Carl Gustaf Fredriksson is also a distant relative to me.

Eric Ahlforts father was Hindric Ahlfort. He is also mentioned in the Torpa books.

There were of course other children that brought the family name Ahlfort further on. Still you can find some 30 entries in the telephone registry in Sweden.

The family name Ahlford was revived by my grandfather Theodor Ahlford in 1882 when he went to university in Uppsala.

That it is some very exciting information!  I am excited for Amber!  That is the stuff movies and novels are made of!

Have you ever thought of writing this into a story?

I found some information which suggests the ship could be the Mauritius, departing from Gothenburg and arriving to New York 6 July 1866.
Send me an email with your postal address and I will put the fotocopies into the mail to you.
