Jimmy,
Many Swedish immigrants settled in Jamestown, NY.  A Swedish great-uncle of mine first settled in Pennsylvania, moved to Jamestown, and became Chief of Police and then Sheriff.  Jamestown is in Chautauqua County, New York.

Hi Jimmy!

Also my family has relatives who emigrated to Jamestown, NY in the end of the 1880's. Luckily enough, their descendents have kept in touch with family in Sweden all the time .... Jamestown was a large Swede town back 100 years ago, lots of mechanical industry as well as furniture industry. However, nowdays Jamestown is declining and has a high un-employment rate. There is a very good book written about the Swedes in Jamestown, which you can borrow from your public library here in Sweden. Also, you will find useful info at http://www.fentonhistorycenter.org/; that is a lovely museum which also has a genealogy section. However, I have never used its services but it could be worth a try. Good luck with your research! /Susanne in Kalmar, Sweden

Yes, Jamestown is a very Swedish town, and one side of my family settled there. (I don't live near Jamestown, however.) There are many Swedish church records and Swedish-American church records (including obituaries) for Jamestown available at the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center. The same records are available in Växjö, I think, at the House of Emigrants.

You can order microfilms of vital records  from the Family History Library. (Order from a Family History Center.) Look in their catalog under Jamestown and also under Chautauqua (the county)since different kinds of records are kept in the county than would be found in the city.

Many of the Swedes in Jamestown were buried at Lake View Cemetery and those records are also available at the Family History Library. They have a record which seems to be a death certificate filmed among those records. They go only partway into the 1900s. The online catalog isn't working right now, so I can't provide film numbers or details.

If you know when these people died, the library will find obituaries for you, for a fee. I have ordered a lot of those and they are very detailed, but they want an exact date of death or at least the month and year of death.

Try posting on boards for Chautauqua County, New York. I received a reply about two or three years later but I did receive help eventually. Perhaps your helper will find your message more quickly than mine did but it won't hurt to try.

The 1900 census for New York, Chautauqua County (where Jamestown is located) has only three Magnusons listed:
Gusta Magnuson - 20 years old
Gustaf Magnuson - 53
Signe Magnuson- 19
There are two MagnuSSons:
Anna Magnusson - 24
Selina Magnusson - 35
I searched that county by given names too, but could not find your Magnuson/Erickson/Erikson ancestors.  I did a quick check of all New York, and was not more successful.

The web address for the Jamestown, NY historical society is:
http://www.fentonhistorycenter.org/genealogy.htm
There is an on-line form to fill out, or you can write to them.  Often when they know that someone is writing from another country, they will not charge the usual research fee.  Maybe they have a database of immigrants to Jamestown, or a census taken in the mid-1890s.

There was a state census for New York in 1892. (Federal Censuses were taken in years ending with 0 but state censuses were taken in other years.) Then there was a state census in 1905, another in 1915, and the last one in 1925. Those state censuses are not online.

Jimmy,
I think I may have found part of your family.I have found in Wisconsin, Douglas County 1900 census Gustaf Erickson: July 1860, wife Mary: May 1854, daughter Anna: Oct. 1885. All born in Sweden. I did not find daughter Jenny there so I am not 100% sure this is your family. They also have a son born Jan. 1888 in North Dakota.
If you look at the census records, here are the exact #'s. T623/1786 pg 121
I will look more for the Magnussons.
Donna
