Foster son, Henry? Hjalmer Hakanson, b 22 Oct 1869

This is my grandmother's grandfather (farmor's farfar).  Our family records show that he was born in Jonkoping to Carl Johansson, but does not show a mother.  They also note that he was the foster  son of Gustaf Hakanson and Emilia Abrahamsdotter.  He served in the Swedish Military between 1889-1891.   He emigrated in June 1891.    
 
If it is any help, is wife was Helga Maria Johannesdotter Petterson, b. 7 Apr 1869 in Bogla, Roberga Socken, Smaland or Thenhult.  She emigrated in Oct. 1891. Daughter of Johannes and Maja Stina (Johannesdotter) Petterson.  And that is where it stops.

Bo, I am fairly sure about the birthdate, but not sure about the emigration date.  It could be off.  What makes you wonder about them?
 
Also, how would you know if he was a foster son or a true son?  Are there birth records for a Carl Johansson?

I look up the Jonkoping Sofia parish that was suggested.  However, can someone look up in the orignal records if there are notations of Henning being a foster son, and his birth father being Carl Johansson?  
 
I am not sure if he truly was a foster son.  Maybe he was illegitimate, or his birth mother died?  How would I find this information?

I've been looking through some of the online parish searches, but I cannot locate Gustav's death or their marriage records - or Gustav's birth.  
 
Can someone recommend how I go about researching Gustav's family line -  
or Emilia's family line -  
 
or Carl Johansson?  If he is the true father of Henning, not sure how to find that...
 
Please help, I am stuck in my search.

The above is Henning's entry in the parish's birth records (the http reference is to a page with the records typed in). The birth records always state the child's biological parents (in some cases the father is stated to be unknown), as one of the reasons for keeping the records was to keep track of how people were related to each other, to prevent close relatives from marrying. I've never seen information about foster parents included in a birth record, only in Household Examination Rolls. If the child is illegitimate, this is stated in the birth record, whether the father is known or not (though of course it may sometimes have been accidentally left out).
 
The name Karl Johansson isn't uncommon, and there are several fathers of that name in the parish during that time. I suggest following Henning and his family in the Household Examination Rolls; this is the standard method for finding out what happens to a person. Then you'll find out if a Karl Johansson became Henning's foster father, or employer, or possibly you'll find no references to him at all (maybe there's been a mixup or misunderstanding early on and he's got nothing to do with him at all).

Would someone be willing to find Gustav and Emilia's parents?  I have found many of my family back to the 1700's and this is the only one I know of that stops at near the 1840s...

I checked the Chicago City Directory for 1893 and did not find Henry Hakanson but I did find this guy in 1894 so maybe.  Notice the surname spelling.

I checked the nearest church to that address that we know of right away, BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH but I did not find him as a member.  Perhaps another church will turn out to be in his neighborhood.

Hello!  I know that much work has been done with Genline.  Is anyone able to do a new search on my Great-great grandfather Henning in the household examination rolls?  I'd like to better understand if he was a foster son or not.  Also, I do not know his wife's background.  Can someone do a search for me?

How do I follow the examination rolls you suggested?  I can't figure that out.  They aren't indexed correct?  So do I have to page through each one for the ongoing years after he was born, 1869 and on?

In order to find Gustaf's and Emilia's parents I would search the Household Examination Rolls for Sandseryd and Mulseryd? Would that provide direction as well to siblings?
