I know who my ggrandparents were but I have not been able to find anything on their parents.
My ggrandparents were Robert Gustave Widen he supposedly was a draft dodger came to this country when he was about 18. He was born in 1862 in Orbero we think, died in Collinsville Ct. USA in 1911.  His wife was Louisa M. Widen she was born in Jan.1858 I think in Orebro.  She worked as a maid in New York city after first arriving, I believe Robert and she were cousins.  She died in 1933 Collinsville CT. USA.
Charles Andrew Anderson was my grandmother's father he was born in 1865 in Gotland? There is a story of their baby being sick and him rowing to the mainland for medicine but she had died by the time he got back.  Her name was Signe Anderson. He died in 1937 in Collinsville Ct. USA. His wife was Mathilda Anderson born 1863 in Gotland? It was told to me that they came to this country twice the first time and for some reason they returned to Sweden and returned to this country in 1888.  They landed in Portland CT USA, my grandmother was born there Elien(Ellen) Anderson.  They moved to Collinsville where my gggrandfather built a house dug the foundation by hand during his lunch break from the Collins Company. I believe they moved to Collinsville in 1900. If you could find any information on my relatives it would be so appreciated.

Sorry for typo re. Gustaf Robert's  mother in my earlier posting: should read  Anna Sofia Björklund.

Clerical survey for Svennevad between 1861 and 1865, (AI:20A  pg 52, GID 2493.4.18400 ) lists Per Erik Andersson b. 10 September 1823 in Svennevad whereas his wife now is mentioned Anna Sofia Andersdotter b. 24 April 1838 in Svennevad. Appeas she is the same woman as Anna Sofia Björklund from book of births.
a sister of Gustaf Robert is also listed:  Sophia Matilda b. 1859 in Svennevad.

Anders Gustaf Widén (Andersson) and Per Erik Andersson were brothers so your guess that Gustaf Robert and Maria Lovisa were cousins was correct.
The parens of Anders Gustaf and Per Erik were Anders Persson b. 1794 in Svennevad and Anna Cajsa Jonsdotter b. 1800 in Sköllersta, Örebro county.

Maybe you can find a month and year of birth for Charles Andrew Anderson in Census 1900, Ct. I can´t find him so far,do you know Mathilda's maiden name?
Charles Andrew is in Swedish Karl Anders and that with surname Andersson is a very, very common name. Gotland is a province and a county as well, and not close enough to find him without a more exact DOB. Records were held in a parish.

I think the family in Collinsvile is the right family.  I was probably wrong and it is Ostergotland.  I find it strange that nothing shows up in Portland before 1900. I am assuming that the story about Signe is true but you know how things change through the years.
I am going to the cemetary after work to look up Charles birth date.

Some more information. Census 1900 have 1889 as wedding year for the persons found in census. In census 1910 is it said that they have 25 yers of marriage, giving approx 1885 as marriage year.

Census 1910 has a question about number of children born and still living. On Mathilda it say 3 born and 2 living.

Thilda and Karl August both worked  at the farm Översätter in Risinge - as maid and farmhand. They came 1881 and  Karl August left before 1884 - to another farm. Perhaps Thilda  left and came back before Signe's birth, as far I can find.

Infant mortality varied a lot, depending on time and location. Death rates were very much higher in cities like Stockholm and Göteborg and lower in country parishes - and were much lower in some country parishes. Infant death rates are e.g. lower in Örby than in Sätila, and yet they are neigbouring parishes in Älvsborg county.

I suspect it was much the same in England: infant death rates in e.g. London, Liverpool and Manchester were probably much, much higher than in well-to-do villages and small towns in the Midlands or on the south coast.

But generally speaking, yes, Sweden probably had a higher infant mortality because Sweden was a very poor country while England was the world's richest country in th 18th and 19th centuries. In which connection it is also interesting to note that already in 1723 more than 90% of the Swedish population could read while in England in 1750 only 60% knew how to read.
