Our Anderson Grandparents
We are in search of my Swedish grandparentâEUR(TM)s place of birth and their forbears. We have attempted to access birth records in Sweden via the Internet only to find that there is not any central records of births in the 1800s. We know that in the 1800 in Sweden like most of Europe the parish churches documented the births, marriages and death of their citizens.

Andrew Anderson was my grandfather. When he immigrated to the United States in 1890s, the US immigration agent must have changed his name because we know that Andrew is not a Swedish given name. What I do know is that he was born in Sweden on December 20, 1863.
From the evidence we do have we believe he was from one the villages around Lake Sijan in central Sweden.

One of our keepsakes is a photo album dated December 23 1893 containing 38 pictures from Sweden. Twenty of the photographs were from the towns of Falun 10, Rättvick 5, Djura 3 and one each from Insjön and Leksand in the county of Kopparbergs, near Lake Sijan in Dalarna County in central Sweden. One from Gävle, Gävleborg County on the East Coast and seventeen from Borås 16 and one from Göteborg, Västra Göteland County on the West Coast.
I suspect Andrew Anderson was born near Lake Sijan moved to Göteborg area to work before immigrating to the US either in late 1880s or early 1890s.
Andrew Anderson immigrated to the Chicago area. He met and married my grandmother Hanna Kjell in La Grange, Illinois in 1895. My Swedish born grandmother maiden name was Hanna Kjell she also used the German name of Schull was born on December 7, 1865. Her place of birth is unknown.
Andrew Anderson became an American citizen on September 11, 1896. Andrew Anderson was a carpenter and cabinetmaker whose skills ranged from making toys, furniture, merry go round horses to constructing houses.

The Andersons had two children in La Grange, Illinois, Harold and our mother Esther. From Illinois, they worked their way across the country with a group of other artisans from Sweden constructing buildings to pay their way.
They first settled in Beaumont California before finally settling in Los Angeles. In California my grandfather continued to build houses, invested in land and rental homes. The Andersons had another child Helen Eleanor and raised their three children in Los Angeles.

The two lower images the only photographs sent from Sweden that I have found in their documents. One of their Swedish friendâEUR(TM)s family name was Person. Since the dresses were unique to an area someone might know of their origin.

My family would very much appreciate any assistance and or leads that that would aid us in our search of our Swedish ancestors. We would like to find and communicate with descendents of their birth families if possible.

This is probably your grandmother Hanna Kjell (Käll - same pronounciation):
Post 547118

Post 547118

Käller Käll, Johanna Charlotta
Fabriksarbetare (unmarried woman) Factory worker

b. 12/7/1865 in Borås, Älvsborgs län (Västergötland)

Emigrated 3/7/1890
from Borås Nr 356, Borås, Älvsborgs län (Västergötland)
to Amerika

Source: Household Examination Roll, p. 639

Emibas migration file ID: Borås P 1890 015

She leaves Gothenburg harbour on March 11, 1890.

As you can see, she is from Borås which may explain the pictures. The shawls in the pictures you published should be indicative of the parish or area, perhaps someone knows where they were used. Unfortunately, I don´t have my book on traditional costumes here.

According to the birth book from Borås, Johanna Charlotta was born in the alms house to Anna Maria Käller (unmarried), no father given. Anna Maria was born in Borås 13 July 1821 according to the household census (SE/GLA/13048 Borås AI:23 (1860-1867)  Bild 173 / sid 337)

The dress the old ladies have are probably from Gagnef in Dalarna and not from Borås. I have been looking in the book Folkdräkter och bygdedräkter från hela Sverige and this seems to be the most likely area.

Do you have a death certificate for Andrew (he would probably have been Anders in Sweden)? There may be additional data on his family there. His application for citizenship can also give clues.

Andrew M Anderson

If this is the man Stan is looking for and he lived on 3775 Crewford Street in Los Angeles, then I found the right Anders in Gagnef.

3775 Crawford Street is the address in the 1930 census. How on earth did you find that out? Good job!
