My great-grandfather, Andrew Gustav Shoholm (Anders Sjoholm?) came to MN, USA in 1900.

Born 20 October, 1876 in Wermland according to records - but we believe that is a misspelling of Värmland by the writer.  His last residence was listed as Gräsmark.

Any way to acquire birth records or census info up to 1900?  I have a friend who can write the letter in Swedish.

Hi!
I found this family in the 1890 census records for Gräsmark parish, Värmland.
Johannes Pettersson, born 1829, Gräsmark parish, farm owner
Brita Olsdotter, born 1840, Gräsmark parish
Jan Peter, born 1871, Gräsmark parish
Anna Stina, born 1873, Gräsmark parish
Anders Gustaf, born 1876, Gräsmark parish
They live at the farm 1/4 Långkärn Holmsjötorp. The name Sjöholm could have its origin from Holmsjö.
There are 3 other Anders Gustaf born 1876 in the same parish, but I think this one is the most likely to be your relative.

    • Ancestor
It's the correct Anders Gustaf, which I can confirm. He's in a book I made about the family of Pål Larsson Kukkoinen, born about 1600 in Finland.
In this book you may find about 10 000 descendants of Kukkoinen.

Thank you both for your information!  However, I still need the addresses to obtain official birth, death, marriage, information.

Any church addresses in Gräsmark would be great, too.

I would rather suggest that you write to Värmlandsarkiv, Box 475, 651 11 Karlstad, Sweden as they are the official provincial archive for Värmland, and they have all the church records before 1900.

Hi!
I stand in contact with SJOHOLM, and is helping them with the requested records. I live in Stockholm, and will copy the records at Arninge. It has been a delay with this, as the microfiche cards are missing from the archive, but new cards will be avaible in the beginning of july. As I do this for free, I don´t want to buy the cards, and will have to wait.
Of course all tips on useful addresses will be valuable to them, I just wanted to inform what I am doing.

I just want to point out that Wermland is not a
misspelling. It is just an older spelling of
Värmland. You can still see the old spelling in
some places in Värmland.

Also the name Andrew is not swedish. The swedish
form is Anders, and he probably changed the name
to the english form when he emigrated to the USA.

A most valuable source of information for those who want to find their ancestors in Wermland (=Värmland) especially in northern W is Emigrantregistreringen Östmark
Metbäcken 109
