Hi! I have a brick wall for my ancestor Johannes Bylin, born July 9, 1808 in Länghem, Västra Götaland. The earliest record I can find is after he had joined the military and was given the name Bylin is in Svenljunga AI2, page 35 with his wife and daughter. There is a note next to the entry but I can't read / don't understand what it says.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I could not read it all but Ithink that it has to do something because he was a soldier, I have followed tha famliy for some years  Svenljunga A1:4 1830-1839 p 76 In Svenljunga A1:5 1840-1845 p 77 they moved some other place Johannas was a corpral.
Svenljunga A1:6 1846 p 9. Svenljunga A1:9 1856-1861 p 43 The house they lived in had a numer 923 the soldier who lived in that house had 923. The next soldier had the same number.


Johannes had a small pension from the military. He died in 10 of marsh 1865 of pneumonia. from records of detah Svenljuna F:1 1861-1895 p 2 His wifte Britta died in 11of August 1903 in Svenljuga of old age from Svenljunga  E.4 1895-1921 p 21

I found him at Åkra in Ullasjö, Johan Andersson born 1808, where it says that he moved to Dalabäcken (in Svenljunga) (Ullasjö (P) AI:2 (1814-1831) Bild 169 / sid 25)

He came from Brostorp in 1827 to Åkra (Ullasjö (P) AI:2 (1814-1831) Bild 131 / sid 11)

He came from Länghem to Brostorp in 1825 (Ullasjö (P) AI:2 (1814-1831) Bild 130 / sid 9)

You can also find him here, where it says that he moved from Länghem to Brostorp in 1825, the boy Johan Andersson at number 600. (Svenljunga (P) B:1 (1816-1854) Bild 34)

Generalmönsterullan says he was bon July 9th 1808 Ullasjö, but I am thinking his birth date is incorrect:

He moved from Skureled in Ullasjö to Dannike parish in 1824 and from Jättebo in Länghem back to Ullasjö in 1825.
It is here confirmed that he was born in Ullasjö and not in Länghem.(Svenljunga (P) HII:2 (1816-1827) Bild 4130)
And in Ullasjö, you find him with his mum Stina Johansdotter at Skureled. He was born 1808 out of wedlock.  His mum was born 3 dec 1771 (Ullasjö (P) AI:2 (1814-1831) Bild 111 / sid 47)
In Ullasjö between 1819 and 1823 they are at the same place, seems as it is under the cottage Strömma  (Ullasjö (P) AI:2 (1814-1831) Bild 75 / sid 31)

Wow Anneli! Thank you so much. I would have never found this information on my own! I wish there was a way to know who his father was, but I am sure that is very difficult. I am trying to trace back Y-DNA of my father and this is very helpful!!

Here are the family even earlier, Johannes does not have an age, he i just described as "späd", recently born. Above him is Gustaf, another of Stina's children, and she had another Johannes even earlier, who must have died.

Maybe they all have the same father, it could be a clue to find him.

Stina's father died as soldier at Åbo castle in Finland 13 Oct  1788 (According to the book "Ullasjö, bygden, gårdarna, människorna, sockenliv och sockenbilder, page 374)

Stina Johansdotter's mother Annika Olofsdotter was born 1749 and lived in the poorhouse 1822-1825. After that period it is unknown where she lived.

(västgöte= from Västergötland)commanded at Bohus (a fortress in Bohuslän at the west coast)

It seems to be written by Ingemar Herngren in 1985. At this homepage you can buy "the new Ullasjö book" for 700 SEK or "the old Ullasjö book" for 300kr. I guess the old book might be the one by Ingemar Herngren, but I don't know for sure. It's on the right side, not too far down, it's in swedish though so you might want to use google translate or something similar.

Thank you. Is there somewhere online for me to look at or purchase the book? I was interested in what it said about how Johan Svensson Stomgren died in Finland. I haven't been able to locate the death record for that.

Kristen, there is sadly enough no more information about his death in the book than I wrote.
Only the text:

soldier Johan Svensson Stomgren,  born year 1749,  hired 6 June 1773,  dead at Åbo castle 13 Oct 1788.

When a soldier died in another country there was rarely a note in the death book in Sweden and there is also no note in the death books for Ullasjö. If you are lucky there is sometimes an inventory after a soldier with information about his death. However in this case I didn't manage to find any after him and also not after his wife Annika Olofsdotter.

Sometimes it is possible to find more information in the court books for the area where he lived, but they are not yet online for time around his death in 1788.

I took a look in another military rol and there it was, his death record.   Södra Kinds Compagnie   914. Ullasjö Skatteg. Joh: Stormgren (wrongly spelled) dead at Åbo castle 13 Oct 1788.

One final question - is it true that when people had children out of wedlock they were fined by the church, and that it was recorded in the church ledger? I have a number of these in my direct family tree and I wondered if I should look through the church records to see if I could determine who the father was if they paid fines.

When they had a child out of wedlock before 1864 that they were brought to court and had to pay a fine. If you are lucky you can find it in the court books, in this case for Kinds häradsrätt. But they are not yet online for 1794-1808, when Stina Johansdotter's children were born. Sometimes it also mentioned in the church books that they had to pay a fine to the church. For Ullasjö and Stina Johansdotter's children it should have been in Ullasjö C:2, but I haven't seen anything mentioned there except the birth of two of her children. The best chance to find the father for her children are the court books, " Kinds häradsrätt", for this area.

By the way, I found that Johannes Svensson Stomgren and Annika Olofsdotter had three more children.

Anna, born about 1774 (not in the birth book)   died May 5, 1779, of smallpox, 5 years old  (Ullasjö (P) C:2 (1749-1816) Bild 107)

Sven, born Oct 21, 1775 at Enebacken  (Ullasjö (P) C:2 (1749-1816) Bild 86)  died Oct 24, 1781, of dysentery, 6 years old   (Ullasjö (P) C:2 (1749-1816) Bild 112)

Sven, born Oct 13, 1785 at Enebacken   (Ullasjö (P) C:2 (1749-1816) Bild 122)
died Dec 28, 1785, of measles, 2 months and 16 days old (Ullasjö (P) C:2 (1749-1816) Bild 125)

 

Another thing Johannes Svensson Stomgren's length was mentioned in one military rol. 6 fot = 178,2 cm

From 1810 only the third child born out of wedlock was punished in an ordninary court, for the first two the mother were only fined by the church. So from that year I guess they was no longer in the court books.
