I am trying to find information about my 3rd great-grandmother Christina Holm (Christine?) https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GDY6-T1R

I am not sure where she was born. The "Minnesota State Census, 1885" https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQF6-XFK recorded her as born in Sweden about 1854.  I have not found any immigration documentation or birth records to support this. I also have no clue who her parents were.

She married Gustaf Höglund https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GL4H-7VD in 1883 in Carver County, Minnesota https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X2TF-6Y5. They had 2 boys named Oscar George Haglund https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LRJL-H3X and Carl John Haglund https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/GDY6-MLG. Both of them were born in Plato, McLeod County, Minnesota.

I have not found out when or where she died or where she is buried. Unfortunately I know very little about her.

I would be very thankful if anyone could please help me. All the information that I have is in the hyperlinks.

Thank you,
      Bethany

Bethany!  Christina was born in Bolstad parish, Dalsland 1854-03-10. Her parents are Lars Olsson and Lisa Pettersdotter. She emigrated 1874-11-13 from Göteborg to New York. I think she got married in Caver, Minnesota 1883 to Gustaf Höglund. I will try to find more.

Christina had six siblings: Anna Cajsa 1848, she married Anders Fredrik Wester in 1871, Maja Lisa 1851, Carl 1857, Matilda 1860, Petter 1862, died 1862, Augusta 1866.
Christina returned to Sweden for a while. In 1882 the whole family emigrated even the the Wester family.

I think there is a mixup of Christinas here and I am a bit confused  :) . Also, for reference Carl Haglund and family has been discussed here:
https://forum.rotter.se/index.php?topic=197067.msg1668121#msg1668121

Christina Larsdotter born March 10th 1854 left for the US without notifying the registrar:

Here it says she left in 1874:

Christina Olsdotter born April 13th 1853 is said to have been moved to Vänersborg in 1875:

Looks like Christina Larsdotter went by Holm. The family settled in La Porte IN according to a member register (think this is her father whose birthdate is 17/1 1817):
Name   Lars Holm
Gender   Male
Event Type   Member List
Birth Date   13 Jan 1817
Birth Place   Bolstad Sverige
Departure Place   Bolstad
Arrival Date   1869
Relation to Head   Head
Church   Bethany Lutheran Church
Child
Karl Holm

But I am wondering if she is the one marrying in Chicago in 1883?

Cook County, Illinois, US, Marriages index:
Name   Christine Holm
Age   28
Gender   Female
Birth Year   abt 1855
Birth Place   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Marriage Type   Marriage
Marriage Date   12 Apr 1883
Marriage Place   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Spouse Name   Charles John Newman
Spouse Age   26
Spouse Gender   Male
Spouse Birth Place   Chicago, Cook, Illinois
FHL Film Number   1030131

Died in 1900?
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2MQ-79VV

Needs more digging...but if so maybe not the right one...?

At least Christina Larsdotter Holm's sister Mathilda can be found in Chicago (I think) according to a member register (maiden says Holm even if ancestry mangles the name and birth date is slightly off):
Name   Mathilda Jackson
Maiden Name   Hohn
Gender   Female
Event Type   Member List
Birth Date   30 Jan 1861
Birth Place   Bålstad, Dalaland
Departure Place   Bålsted
Arrival Date   1873
Relation to Head   Head
Church   Saron Lutheran Church

Thank you all for the information!!! I appreciate your time. I am just learning how to do Swedish Genealogy (Prussian was much easier!!). With the different last names, changing last names, along with everything else, I find it to be really confusing.   :-\

Where do you find the records?

Christina was married in Carver County, Minnesota in 1883 to Gustaf Höglund. Gustaf's family arrived in 1869 and joined the parish in East Union, Carver County.

(The discussion regarding Carl Haglund was mine as well, I probably could have linked it to the post here)

The references I gave are for arkiv digital, but the page numbers are often the same or one or two pages off for riksarkivet.

I think I found Christina Larsdotter Holm born March 10th 1854 in a member register for Salem Lutheran Church in Chicago. Her sister Mathilda/Tilda is listed on the row below with a note of marriage to Victor Jackson. The birth year for Christina is off by one year and immigration is listed as 1871, but I suspect that it is her:
Name   Christina Holm
Gender   Female
Event Type   Member List
Birth Date   10 Mar 1853
Birth Place   Blästad
Arrival Date   1871
Relation to Head   Head
Church   Salem Lutheran Church

Christina is removed from the register in 1886 with no further notes. Tilda is noted as coming from La Porte in 1880.

I think I will stop digging into that family for a bit due to the Chicago trail...

However, I also think the Christina Olsdotter/Olofsdotter Holm born April 13th 1853 that Bo found is very interesting. I loose her when she moves to Vänersborg...but the Minnesota connection is promising. Maybe track her siblings down and see what that leads to...?

For reference, this is her family:
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0043080_00272

This is when she is noted as leaving for Vänersborg in 1875:
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0043082_00281

Her father Olof Jonsson dies in 1885 but I cannot find an estate inventory for him.

Edit:
There is a note about Olof Jonsson being poor in the household exam so maybe that is the reason for not finding an estate inventory:
https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0043084_00349

Please note that the family above Olof Jonsson is the other Holm family discussed here  :) ...maybe they were related?

Here from U.S. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Swedish American Church Records at Ancestry.com is Christina Larsdotter Holm born 10 March 1854 in Bolstad with Carl Johan Nyman (Charles John Newman) born 5 Nov 1856 also in Bolstad.  Between 1884 and 1895 they had at least five children, all born in Chicago.  So most likely as Kristina Rylander suggested, this Christina Holm isn't the right person.

It's possible that the Christina Jönsson you found is the right person, however her title is "Gift" which means she was married.  Also in that era a woman who was the daughter of "Olof Jonsson" usually wouldn't have been called "Jönsson" but more likely "Jonsson", "Olsson", or "Olsdotter".

I spent some time trying to follow Christina Olofsdotter/Olsson, and I am wondering if she is the one moving into Vänersborg 1875 but with a birth place noted as Gestad? Says she is coming from Bolstad:
Vänersborg (P) AI:25 (1870-1881) Bild 60 / sid 93 (AID: v44826.b60.s93, NAD: SE/GLA/13632)

If she is correct then I can follow her up until 1879 when she moves to Gothenburg:
Göteborgs Domkyrkoförsamling (O) AIa:16 (1878-1883) Bild 206 / sid 595 (AID: v35192.b206.s595, NAD: SE/GLA/13180)

There is a note there that I don't understand, but this is the last trace I have found of her. Can someone read what it says or what it means?

If she emigrated I am thinking she would have done so from Gothenburg and not Copenhagen (theory). But I cannot seem to find any good passenger list for her. Maybe someone else can? Believe she would have used either Olofsson or Olsson as a last name...?

Regarding the mentioned Chistina Jönsson, she travelled with a little boy, Johan Albert, 2 years old. I doubt she is the correct one, also since they travelled from Copenhagen.

I think I found Mathilda Olofsdotter/Olsson in a member register for Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato:
Name   Mathilda Olson

Says she was born in Bolstad if you look at the image. So that places her in Minnesota.

Wondering if she was married to Henry Henderson...? Same birth date...

There is a note there that I don't understand, but this is the last trace I have found of her. Can someone read what it says or what it means?
obefR = Obefintligas register

Here she is listed from 1883, line 36:

Göteborgs Domkyrkoförsamling (O) AIII:1a (1883-1890) sid 213
Hälsar vänligen

Thank you!
So likely she emigrated sometime between 1879 - 1883.

I'm trying to find a marriage record for Christina and Gustaf that (maybe) would have her parents names listed. Or maybe the East Union Parish would have something.
I've reached out to Carver County in the past inquiring about records. They won't look for you but invite you to look yourself. I've never gotten a response from the church either.

But I did find these Clerical Surveys:

Ok, so to confuse things even more I wanted to throw in another Christina in the mix  :)

There is a Sven Andersson Holm born October 31st 1828 Åsaka living in Carver and member of the East Union Lutheran Church:
Name   Sven Anderson Holm
Gender   Male
Event Type   Member List
Birth Date   31 Oct 1828

Departure Place   Skaraborgs
Arrival Date   1858
Relation to Head   Head
Church   East Union Lutheran Church

It says he came from Sweden in 1858.

There is a Sven Andersson who emigrated together with a bunch of people to Minnesota in 1858 (he was from Klutagården, Barne-Åsaka/Lekåsaa):
Lekåsa (R) B:1 (1791-1859) Bild 104 / sid 201 (AID: v9437.b104.s201, NAD: SE/GLA/13323)

Looking at the last household exam he is in he was born October 31st 1828:
Lekåsa (R) AI:6 (1853-1860) Bild 76 / sid 18 (AID: v9741.b76.s18, NAD: SE/GLA/13323)

Older household exams have him being born October 30th 1828:
Barne-Åsaka (R) AI:5 (1847-1853) Bild 17 / sid 27 (AID: v9757.b17.s27, NAD: SE/GLA/13018)

Anyway, his father died in 1867 and there was an estate inventory made after him:
Barne häradsrätt (R) FII:17 (1860-1869) Bild 8780 / sid 1747 (AID: v143458a.b8780.s1747, NAD: SE/GLA/11022)

Just says Sven is in America.

3 sisters to Sven emigrated after that, Johanna and Maja in 1868 and Christina in the spring of 1870:
Lekåsa (R) AI:8 (1865-1870) Bild 137 / sid 130 (AID: v9744.b137.s130, NAD: SE/GLA/13323)

Christina was the youngest in the family and she was born December 22nd 1853. So I wanted to add her to the possible candidates.

Their mother Cajsa Svensdotter died in 1883, but I cannot find any estate inventory after her unfortunately.

This passenger list looks like it could be Christinas:
Name   Kristina Andersdotter
Gender   Kvinna (Female)
Age   17
Birth Date   abt 1853
Birth Place   Skaraborgs län, Åsaka Sn
Arrival Port   Hull, England
Departure Date   6 maj 1870 (6 May 1870)
Departure Place   Göteborg
Port   Göteborgs
Ship   Rollo
Volume Number   479727

Says her destination is Chicago, but since her brother can be placed in Carver I didn't want to rule her out. It is 13 years between her emigrating and the marriage if it is her.

I cannot find any trace of her in the US so I was hoping someone else here could help out  :)

Also, Bethany, have you looked at your DNA matches to see if the ones you suspect are on your Carl Haglunds side can be linked back to any of the mentioned families here?

That is the same Sven Anderson I discussed in my previous note.

His daughter Christina was married Nelson. but he had also a much younger sister Christina who I am curious about.

Edit:
In order to view the links to archives.com you need a subscription there. This is one I don't have access to at the moment :-)

I found a Christina Holm in Carver, but according to a church register (East Union) this Christina married a John S Nelson and died in 1925. She was the daughter to Sven Anderson Holm and his wife Maja Andersdotter:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/30533710:61584

So there must have been another Christina Holm in the same area. Marriage record says they were both from Carver. No help from the witnesses, I think they were the family of the justice of the peace.

No, did you read my previous post? And look at the linked member register?

Sven Anderson Holm had a daughter Christina born 1857 who was married to John S Nelson.

Sven Anderson Holm had a sister Christina born December 22nd 1853. This Christina emigrated 1870 with destination Chicago. Have found no further records of her in the US. I thought she was interesting since her brother lived in Carver.

I'm sorry, I misread your last message. I am still trying to learn Riksarkivet.

I do know that the 1885 Minnesota Census (Helen, McLeod, Minnesota) has her age recorded as 31 yrs old and her est DOB as 1854.

&
1883 she was married in Carver, County:

I attached the images from Archives with the family living in Dahlgren:

Thats ok. Lots of info here  :)

Where does it say that the Christina Nelson who died June 2nd 1925 was married to Gustaf P Haglund?

The church member register previously linked states she was Mrs John Nelson.

You have them both here (including a description of her death):

the first image just shows Gustaf and Christina

Gustaf isn't listed as a spouse for Kristina Nilson, but when I clicked on Christina Holm's name on the Marriage record for Gustaf - Kristina Nilson's page was the one
what opened up, and then I just clicked on her parents names to get the rest of the information.

The Christin Holm has the Gustaf P Hoagland listed as her spouse

And the Kristina and Christin have variations in parents even though they are both listed under Sven

(Images Holm 2, 3, 4 & 8 i believe)

Hm, so I found this family in the 1900 census:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/26140368:7602

And then 1910 census:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/148912473:7884

I am beginning to wonder if you are right...? Very conflicting info.
Could Christina Holm born January 4th 1857 be a sister to John S Nelson and the record say Miss not Mrs? It is handwritten, but looks like Mrs to me and it is stated wife on the next page.
She is listed as single in the census records....so halfsiblings maybe...? John being born in Sweden....then why Nelson for Christina? If she was married Hoglund then why not listed as widowed?

So many questions...  :)

oh sorry!
When I was searching for records on Archives and found that marriage record for Gustaf and Christina (which is recorded as Christine), I clicked on her name to view
her information and Kristina Nilson from Dahlgren was the person that came up - not a Christina Holm. That's how I came across the other information. But that's just on
Archives. I'm checking Ancestry and FamilySearch to compare information on each person

Kristina Nilsons information page on Archives doesn't have a spouse listed. Her parents names are SVEN ANDERSON HOLM & MAJA ANDERSON
There is one record attatched (1870 Census) to her.
When I open up that record it is for a Christina Helm (?)
And the parents on there are
Mary Helm (48 yrs)
Swen A Helm (41 yrs)

Not to further confuse you ...
But I think that Kristina Nilson and Christin Holm may be the same person (on Archives)

Christin has the 1880 census
The parents there are
Mary Holm (52 yrs)
Sven Holm (50 yrs)

Sven Holm on the same 1880 census form (from image Holm 22) :
the link on Sven Holm (Image Holm 23) on the 1880 Census for Christens name opens to the same Christen

Mary Holm on the same 1880 census form (from image Holm 22) :
the link for her name (Holm 22) opens up to the Mary Holm on image Holm 24.
If I click on View Her Story on the top of the census, the person it opens is Maria Pearson (Image Holm 25)

Maria Pearson has the 1870 & 1880 Census.
The 1870 census (Image Holm 26) has Maria listed as a Mary Helm. The daughter listed is Christia Helm.
Christia Helm brings me back to Kristina Nilson. If I open the 1870 census on Kristina Nilson the name Christia Helm (age 12) is what is listed.
The 1880 census (image Holm 27)  has Maria listed as Mary Holm. The daughter listed there is Christin Holm (age 21). When I open the link for Christin
I get the same census as image Holm 22.
And then the view her story link (Holm 22) brings me to Christin Holm (Image Holm8 from my other post)

***I'm tempted to send you my login information and all the links so you can see what I'm talking about***

I know that is really confusing, but I hope adding the image number next to everything helps...

Here's a church register from East Union Lutheran Church listing Sven Nilson born 12/5 1830, his wife Maja Andersdotter born 19/8 1821 and their children Johan born 19/3 1854 and Christina born 4/1 1857.
Sven Nilson died 5/6 1859.  Sven Anderson born 31/10 1828 Åsaka moves in (after he and Maja were married on 24 Dec 1859 as found by Kristina Rylander) and an additional son August is born 14/11 1860.  So Sven Nilson is Christina's father and Sven Holm is her stepfather.

Here from Familysearch.org is the death certificate for Christen Nelson's 2 Jun 1925 death.  Date of birth was 4 Jan 1858, her father's name was Swen Nelson, and her mother's name was unknown.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP7N-LPVQ

I think these two records have previously been posted.  Sven Anderson Holm born 31/10 1828, Maja Andersdotter born 19/8 1821, and Kristina born 4/1 1857 leave East Union Lutheran Church 9/2 1891 and are added to Salem Lutheran Church's register on that same date.

It sounds to me like the people found on Archives.com in the 1870 and 1880 censuses are all the same family, but I'm wondering if that website has correctly linked Christina Nelson/Holm with the Christina Holm who married Gustaf Hoglund in 1883?
If so then Christina would have left her husband and two small children between 1887 and 1891.

I would not trust that link in archives.com without any records supporting it. But I have not used that site  :)

This is Sven Anderson Holm and family in the Minnesota State Census for 1885:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/4583142:1058?tid=&pid=&queryId=adf8e534-f645-4c9a-b4b0-0816ba76fc65&_phsrc=YDS41&_phstart=successSource

If the Christina listed here is his step-daughter, then she is not the one we are looking for.
I think John's wife was Emelia and born about 1850 Massachusetts. She lives with John in Carver in the 1880 census. Not sure when she dies though.

Christina is also living together with her mother and stepfather according to the Minnesota State Census 1895:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/1788146:1058?tid=&pid=&queryId=9c27df04-b4ef-4156-9e92-46fe19ee49b5&_phsrc=YDS42&_phstart=successSource

I do find Sven Andersson Holm's youngest sister Christina born December 22nd 1853 very interesting still.
And I also think that Gustaf Haglund's death record would be good to find.
According to MNHS you have to contact McLeod county directly since there are no online records that early.

I have not had luck finding Gustaf's death record. I contacted a few different places and they don't keep record that far back.
However you did find the newspaper clipping
https://newspapers3.mnhs.org/jsp/PsImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=490da125-087a-46e1-a544-1414dc5347d6%2Fmnhi0013%2F1E0XSD59%2F92072701
for his death. Unfortunately it doesn't give much detail other than the train accident stating he was from Plato.

I've contacted the ELCA this is what they said pertaining to Gustaf:
At the time of Gustav’s death, he is linked to living in Plato – according to the news brief in Svenska folkets tidning.
Since Bethel Lutheran in Lester Prairie was the same county as Plato/Glencoe, I looked in the Bethel Lutheran Church
records for any funeral entries for 1892 and there were none. It looks like there are big gaps in the years of funerals recorded.
There are none recorded from 1892-1903, except for one in 1893 and none recorded from 1909-1913.
It’s difficult to say that it means there wasn’t a funeral for Gustav held at Bethel when there might have been, and it wasn’t recorded.

She didn't have any luck finding funeral records for Gustaf, his parents, or Christina. In looking at the census information for the families,
it looks as if they pretty much stayed in the same areas: Carver County for Britta Jonsson/Johnson and McLeod County for Gustav and Christina Hoglund.
She suggested looking at local papers from those two counties, Carver County, and Mcleod County to see if there are any obituaries listed for Gustav Hoglund in 1892. It’s possible the obituary would list where a funeral was held and where the interment took place.
One thing she noticed when assisting people with these kinds of genealogical questions, is that obituaries were an important thing in terms of letting people know about a death in the area – since people would have
relied almost exclusively on the newspaper for news beyond their immediate circle. The Minnesota Historical Society has information on back issues of newspapers from the 19th century.

I agree with you about the Archives website. Same records for people - too many different names. It's confusing.

The Christina we are looking for was married in 1883 and wouldn't have been living with her mother and stepfather in 1895 unless she moved back in with them after Gustaf died, and her
children were farmed out. Which would explain why I found the oldest boy in Iowa and I believe Carl the younger one in southern minnesota.

I did reach out to McLeod History and they said unable to find any records for Gustaf & Christina Hoglund or their sons in their McLeod County files. The only suggestion we can give you is to check for
obituaries for the sons in the places they died: Oscar George-Windom, Cottonwood County, MN
and Carl John Little Falls, Morrison County, MN. Obituaries might give you clues about the parents.

I'm going to check and see if I can find any obituaries for Oscar and Carl.

On Gustaf and Christina's oldest son Oscar's baptism record from the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1781-1969 has his godparents listed. I thought they might be worth looking into...
Their names are:
Erik Swenson, Mrs. Anna Swenson, Swen E Swenson, & Miss Bertha Maria Ellingson

I found Erik and Anna Swenson on Find A Grave. Census records from 1870 - 1880 say they were living in Bergen located in McLeod County. 1900 Anna is a widow, still liven in Bergen with her son and his family
It says she was from Norway. And Erik from Sweden.
Burial info:
Cemetery:   Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place:   Lester Prairie, McLeod County, Minnesota, United States of America

Swen E Swenson also lived in Bergen and attended Bethel Lutheran in Lester Prairie. He was born in Minnesota. 1880 Census says Swen M Swenson but Erik and Anna are listed as his parents.
Find a Grave Info:
BIRTH: 9 Mar 1865 Minnesota, USA
DEATH: 22 Feb 1959 (aged 93) Granite Falls, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, USA
BURIAL: Hillcrest Cemetery Granite Falls, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, USA
MEMORIAL ID: 98020044

Bertha Ellingson was born in Minnesota. Her Parents born in Norway. She also lived in Bergen. I believe she also went by the name Betsy. Her mothers name was
Jane Ellingson. Her father was Johann "John" Ellingson. Jane and Johann married on June 10th 1858 in Carver. Johann died in 1865.
Jane:
BURIAL: Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery - McLeod County, Minnesota in 1906
Johann:
DEATH: 10 Mar 1865 (aged 43–44) St. Louis City, Missouri, USA
BURIAL: Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA

Johann was born in Norway and was the son of Elling Johnson and his wife Betsy. He married Jane(Thompson) on June 10th 1858 in Carver, Minnesota. Him and Jane had 4 children.

I was hoping that the families were tied together somehow ...
So - I wonder if perhaps Gustaf and Christina didn't live in Bergen. Plato is only about 8 miles South of Bergen and Lester Prairie is 2 miles North.
I also learned that East Union is Dahlgren Township. At least thats how it comes up on Google Maps. But thats right outside of Carver.

I did find a Florence Hoaglund born March 1880 in Minnesota, She was living in Bergen during the 1900 Census as a boarder and says her parents were born in Ohio.

I'm not sure how popular the last name Holm is but I did a search for Holm in Carver and McLeod county on Ancestry to see what names came up.

I found a Johan 'John' Holm he died in 1868 living in Carver County. Census of 1865 has him in Dahlgren.
There are a bunch of Holms that were living in Benton, Carver, MN including a Christine (b. abt 1863 born in Sweden) and a Matilda (b. abt 1849 in Sweden) Holm. I can't read what the names say on the 1885 Census.
