Hi,
I'm hoping someone can identify a location for me.
Johan Södergren born 1746 and his family were living at the Sörby Soldatehus In Hyltinge parish, Södermanland.

Hyltinge (D) AI:3 (1783-1795) Image 190 / Page 14 (AID: v115739a.b190.s14, NAD: SE/ULA/10422)

I believe he was a soldier and left service in 1789 or 1790 because of his age.  I can't determine where he and his family went however.
It looks like his daughter Maria left in 1787 to a location written in the Afgådt til column.

Can someone help me determine where Johan Södergren's family went and also where their daughter Maria went?
I've attached an image of the Household record page

Thanks so much.
Jay Hagfeldt

According to the 1789 muster roll, Johan Söderberg was deemed unfit for service and was granted leave:
Generalmönsterrullor - Södermanlands regemente (D) 147 (1789) Bild 6110 (AID: v187509a.b6110, NAD: SE/KrA/0023)

So presumably he then left the "soldatehus".
A soldier Södergren with his wife Christina (a form of Kerstin) Nilsdotter in Sörbystugan is mentioned in Hyltinge AI:3 p. 157.But they can't be found there in Hyltinge AI:4 p. 16.

Hyltinge CI:3 p. 373 mentions the death of Johan Söderbergs son Johan on 15 June 1790 in Sörby Backstuga, which I guess is the same place as Sörbystugan.

I've tried to find Johan Söderberg in the death records 1790-1800 but without success.

The daughter born in 1771 and mentioned on p. 14 is named Catharina, not Maria. She's noted as having moved to Roslagen 1787. Not a very helpful information, since Roslagen isn't a parish but an area with a lot of parishes, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roslagen

Thanks for your help.
Yes, I did mean Catharina, not Maria.
I appreciate your insights. This information gives me more avenues of research.

Regards.
Jay

P.S.
My wife and I took a boat tour of the Stockholm archipelago this past August.
What a beautiful tour. We stopped at a few islands and hiked a bit. It was a great experience.

After searching the ArkivDigital indexes, I managed to find Johan and Kerstin in Helgesta AI:4 pp. 53, 91, 169, 173, 195.

Johan Söderberg is mentioned as widower in Helgesta AI:4 p 169. Presumably it's Kerstin's death record in Helgesta C:3 p. 196, 5 Sept. 1803.

Apparently Johan remarries, since he is mentioned with wife Brita Ersdotter in Helgesta AI:4 p. 195. I haven't been able to find their marriage record, though, although trying both Helgesta and Hyltinge records.

Yes, the Stockholm archipelago (or archipelagoes - both in the Baltic Sea and the lake Mälaren) are indeed beautiful. Glad you enjoyed the experience!

Sorry, but I don't think he remarried. They are just listed after each other on page 195.

I assume he is the Johan Södergren who died February 7th 1811 at Hällsund (even though birth year is 1750):
Helgesta (D) C:3 (1762-1854) Bild 2060 / sid 198 (AID: v59304a.b2060.s198, NAD: SE/ULA/10394)
Helgesta (D) AI:5 (1805-1812) Bild 58 / sid 65 (AID: v59281.b58.s65, NAD: SE/ULA/10394)

He was living there in the previous household exam as well (with birth year 1748):
Helgesta (D) AI:4 (1793-1805) Bild 173 / sid 169 (AID: v59280.b173.s169, NAD: SE/ULA/10394)

Brita Ersdotter died April 5th 1807 and she was widowed:
Helgesta (D) C:3 (1762-1854) Bild 2050 / sid 197 (AID: v59304a.b2050.s197, NAD: SE/ULA/10394)

Here she is with her husband who died 1799:
Helgesta (D) AI:4 (1793-1805) Bild 90 / sid 86 (AID: v59280.b90.s86, NAD: SE/ULA/10394)

Makes sense, since Johan is mentioned as widower in his death record.

thank you for your help.  I'm a little overwhelmed at the responses.  Its much more than I had hoped for.

One more question.  Would a good english translation for Södergren be: South Branch?

Yes. A typical example of the form of surnames that became popular during the late 19th and early 20th century, when people began to abandon patronymics.

Surnames were often constructed using nature-related words: berg (mountain), sjö (lake), tree names (björk/birch, lind/linden, gran/fir) and so on. The words were often coupled giving slightly odd results if taken literally, such as Sjöberg (lake mountain) or Sandgren (sand branch). My own surname (taken by my great-great-grandfather in the 1840's) is built from hammare/hammer - not the tool, but signifying a stony, tree-clad hill - and lund/grove.
