Attached is a copy of a 1697 muster roll for Måns Gummesson.  Can anyone help with translation of the note.  It looks like it contains his birth place, but I cannot tell what it says.  Also, I am confused as to whether he is becoming soldier #29 or leaving it.

Any help would very much appreciated,

Vicki

I read:

"Roten skaffar karl för Flattinge, vacante Roten instält Måns Gummesson d 20 Octob. 693 född i Fryeledh sochn. Approberas".

The rote hires man for Flattinge, the vacant rote has presented Måns Gummesson on Oct 20, 1693, born in Fryele parish. Approved.
You are lucky here, his place of birth is mentioned:-) But the word approved must be an error?

Hi Yvonne!

I have been trying to track soldier Måns Gummesson’s military history, starting in 1686 when he was living in Fallnaveka, Berga.  He was in the Kronobergs Infantry at that time.  The records for 1686 and all 1688 are for the correct Måns Gummesson, but I think I have gone wrong in 1693.

1986
Måns Gummesson is soldier #167 in Fallnaveka, Berga. He replaced Bengt Nilsson who couldn’t be found.

1688
Måns Gummesson listed as soldier #167 – again listed as replacing Bengt Nilsson who couldn’t be found.

1688
Måns Gummesson is listed as soldier #167 in Fallnaveka.

1693
Måns Gummesson is listed –  the wrong Måns Gummesson?  It says he’s at Flattinge.

I was hoping the notes indicated that he went to Flattinge!  But it doesn't seem so.

The military research has been extremely difficult, but I'll keep trying because I enjoy the challenge.

Thanks so much for your help!  It's always nice to hear from you!

Vicki

Hi Vicki,

In that case I think you have the wrong Måns in Flattinge. Have you seen this page:

Wow, thank you, Yvonne!  I'm so glad you posted this!!   Just finished looking at the information and it matches up with the information I have found through June 1702.

A couple days ago I had added a follow up question to my original post at  https://forum.rotter.se/index.php?topic=194966.0   wondering if there might be a link between Måns Gummesson #167 from Fallnakeva in Berga and Måns Gudmundsson from Vittaryd.  I hadn't been able to find any connecting link   Not sure why I didn't think of Rolf Carlsson's website!!

GUDMUNDSSON Måns
Släktnamn: Gudmundsson
Född: -
Död: 1705
Antagen: 1686
Avsked: 1705
Aktnummer: KR-05-0688-1686
Regemente: Kronobergs regemente
Rote: Ubbeboda
Kompani: LJUNGBY KOMPANI
Socken: VITTARYD
Torpnummer: KR-05-0688

The time frame works.  When researching through the Rullor 1620-1723 records I couldn't find a record for him in 1686 December muster.  I found him in 1688. But then couldn't find after that.  I did find a Måns Gummesson in Vittaryd, Ubbeboda rote as soldier # 79 from 1699- June 1702 and then lost him.

Most recently I've been looking through the Berga parish military records, which is where I found him in 1686 and 1688.

I have no idea if these two different soldiers named Måns Gummesson are the same person or not.  Could Måns have signed up in Berga, but been placed in Vittaryd to cover for the missing solldier, but then stayed there?  Is this a possibility?  I initially thought they were two different people, but have been rethinking this.

So you just answered my question!  I have been going through everything again and thankfully there aren't a lot of Måns Gummessons.    :)  Wasn't sure where to go next with my search.

Also interesting is the court case listed.  I happened to find it this morning on sunnerbo.nu when doing a search for Måns Gummesson Fallnaveka.  At least I think it is the same one - although I haven't translated it yet...it was the only one that I found.

Thanks again SO MUCH for this and reminding of all the available sources we are fortunate to have,

Vicki
