Estate Inventory words

I am having trouble translating two words. They seem like simple words but I can’t find a translation anywhere.
They are under the heading iron things.
First line  “grästa” and fourth line the plural version of it “grästor”. Also, any ideas as to what Kyttelands is?
Third line “smarn”.

Gräfta = hoe, pickax
If you give us a source for your question, we might be able to see if "knyttelands" is some dialect word from a certain part of Sweden.

I take the opportunity to explain another word. 5 st små päron gräftor. You can't dig for pears with a pickax. The word "päron" in this case means potatoes. In France they call them pommes de terre because they thought that potatoes looked like apples. But in Sweden we thought otherwise. Even nowadays in Ångermanland we call them "pären, pärer", "pära" in the singular. The pickax used for potatoes is really small, the blade 12 cm long and 8 cm wide, pointed.

Yes, that was very confusing.
Many of the words in these estate inventories are very difficult to translate, especially if the word is dialectal or misspelled.

Possibly the last word in the third line should be read "smärre", i.e. smaller. So the estate contained 5 hoes for use on burn-beaten land, one better, two at 16 shillings apiece and two smaller. I believe that the translation "hoe" that Bo Nordenfors suggested is a better translation than "pickax", as the compound words mentioned in the Swedish Academy's wordbook all relate to some kind of digging or "grävande".

There are additional lines listing different hoes so now I am able to translate quite a bit of the section of “iron things”.
The estate inventories are one of the most interesting type of document that I have found. They tell me a lot about a person/family but do take a long time to translate.

You are no doubt right, Bertil. But if I translate "päron gräftor" by "potato digs" the meaning can't be misinterpreted.
