Hej,

I have been researching my Swedish ancestors and relatives for a number of years, but I recently came across the above database index on Ancestry.com. I had never seen it before. Apparently letters from Swedes were collected by the Larsson brothers and are stored in Göteborg.

I have an Archive Call Number (2:1883:M13) for a distant relative (August Wilhelm Magnusson, b. 19 Jun 1864, Växjö Landsförsamling) and I would like to obtain a copy of his letter(s). I am trying to verify if an August Magnusson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, for whom I have incomplete information, is the same person. Can someone tell me if images are available and, if so, to whom I might direct a request for an electronic copy/copies?

Tack så mycket!
Martin Remus

Martin, I think I found your family tree on ancestry and I also think you have the wrong August. Let me explain..

I found the following church member record:
Name:   August Magnusson
Gender:   Male
Baptism Age:   0
Event Type:   Member List
Birth Date:   9 Jun 1864
Birth Place:   Oja, Kromb. l. Sweden
Baptism Date:   1864
Departure Place:   Oja Sweden
Arrival Date:   1882
Relation to Head:   Head
Church:   Trinity Lutheran Church

If you look at it you see his wife Hilda Kristina nee Erickson born May 1st 1882 Eksjö. The have a son, Ralph August.

So, I do think this August Magnusson was Sven August Magnusson born June 9th 1864 Öja parish. Parents Magnus Svensson and Britta Stina Jaensdotter.

He emigrated in 1882.

I also found his father's estate inventory from 1911 and his son Sven August is listed with an address in Minneapolis.

Based on your tree you're trying to find August Wilhelm born June 19th 1864 Växjö (who's birth month was incorrectly changed to September in later household exam rolls)?

Thank you, Sven, for directing me to Riksarkivet. I found the letter, but, unfortunately, it did not contain a specific destination in America for A W Magnusson of Nydala Kronoberg.

Kristina, I accept your explanation and thank you for it. One tries leads that don't always yield the desired result. I will correct my tree. I had found a Declaration of Intention for an August Magnusson, b. 9 Jun 1864, and his birthplace was written as 'Wixa'. While I knew the birth date was 10 days different than that for August Wilhelm (and as you did, I had already found that his 19 Jun 1864 birth date in Växjö landsförsamling AI:14 was written as 19 Sep 1864 in AI:15 and subsequent H.E.R.), and I knew the emigration years were different, I had hoped that 'Wixa' might have been Wexio. Do you know if 'Wixa' was a farm in Öja parish? I looked in a couple of the Öja church books, but didn't see this place.

I am also curious about the Minneapolis address you found in the estate inventory and wonder if you would be so kind to provide it to me? Sven August had several addresses in Minneapolis and I would like to satisfy my curiosity.

And now I am back to trying to find A W Magnusson in America. I am using August, Wilhelm, and even William and various forms of August, in the hope that I can find him.

Regarding Öja. There are several Öja if you just google but the Öja meant here is a parish just outside of Växjö. He lived with his family in a place called Getaskärv. So, I also think he meant Växjö on his declaration. I don't use SVAR but I have the reference to AD: Öja (G) AI:9 (1861-1865) Bild 44 / sid 36 (AID: v21550.b44.s36, NAD: SE/VALA/00475)

G also means Kronobergs län.

The address listed in his father's estate inventory is 2306 9th St South Minneapolis Minnesota. The date this was made was October 30th 1911, Kinnevalds häradsrätt (G) FII:42 (1912-1914) Bild 750 / sid 141 (AID: v498954.b750.s141, NAD: SE/VALA/01552)

That matches this entry in U.S City Directories:
Name:   August Magnusson
Residence Year:   1911
Street Address:   2306 S 9th
Residence Place:   Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
Occupation:   Helper
Publication Title:   Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1911

No match for either 1910 or 1920 census....or the declaration.

I spent some time yesterday searching for August Wilhelm but also with the last name Swanson/Swenson. As you know his brother Carl Gustaf Adolf (b November 4th 1850) also emigrated. He settled in Shafer, Chisago and used Swanson:
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/62545594/carl-gustaf-swanson

And of course that opens up for a lot of possibilities. Not so easy finding an August/Gust Swanson/Swenson born 1864 without anything more to go on :)

I did not find any estate inventories of their parents. They both died in 1887, Växjö landsförsamling (G) AI:18 (1886-1890) Bild 183 / sid 177 (AID: v21458.b183.s177, NAD: SE/VALA/00456). And I haven found any obituary for Carl Gustaf Adolf unfortunately.

As a side note, my 3rd great grandparents emigrated to be near their children in Minnesota. All except my 2nd great grandmother stayed in the US. I think I ordered between 10-15 death records from MNHS before I found the right ones for my 3rd great grandfather and also my 2nd great grand aunts husband  :) . Too bad many are missing birth dates in the index...and with common names...

Thanks for your research, Kristina, but several years ago I researched Carl Gustaf Adolf Swanson in quite a bit of depth. As I live in the Twin Cities, MN, metro area, it was easy for me to go to MNHS for death certificates for him and his children. I thought I had an obit from the Taylors Falls, MN, newspaper, but can't lay hands on it at the moment. From his death certificate, I know he was buried in the Franconia Cemetery, down Hwy 8 from Shafer toward T F. I have a 1916 plat map of Shafer Township with the probable farm location and a couple of items that show his family as members of Trinity Lutheran Church, T F. I've previously connected with a descendant of his who provided information about the Swanson children that his grandmother had (I believe she was a granddaughter of Carl).

Like you, I tried Swanson/Swenson for August. I may try to contact the descendant to see if he has anything about August. To my knowledge, none of Carl and August's sisters emigrated. Yes, Carl and August's parents died a little less than a month apart (I'm a volunteer researcher for our MN Swedish Genealogy group, so I'm on Arkiv Digital frequently).

The address for (Sven) August is in the 1911 directory I have in my shoebox, so my curiosity is satisfied. I found him in the 1910 census living just south of downtown Minnepolis; many apartment buildings in that area (across I-94 from the Convention Center). I also found him in south Minneapolis, along with HIlda and Ralph, in the 1920 census under the surname that was erroneously written as Manuon. The family lived in a different part of south Minneapolis in the 1930 census. He was quite a bit older than Hilda.

Thanks again for your assistance.

I wasn't sure if you were local to the twin cities or not and my curiosity got the better of me so I have placed an order for the death certificate of the August Swanson who died in St Paul July 10th 1946  :)

He was married to Emma Julia Ekelund born September 12th 1868, Kulltorp (F) AI:15 (1881-1890) Bild 209 / sid 201 (AID: v20680.b209.s201, NAD: SE/VALA/00196). She emigrated in 1887.

Her father's estate inventory from 1910 places her at 1003 Edgerton St, St Paul, Västbo häradsrätt (F, N) FII:70 (1910-1911) Bild 1600 / sid 90 (AID: v496285.b1600.s90, NAD: SE/VALA/01609).

That is a match for a Gust Swanson and wife Julia and their 2 children in the 1910 census.

According to the 1900 census (different address then, 596 Lawson, St Paul) Julia is said to be born in May and Gust in February...obviously hers is incorrect so I was thinking that maybe his was too...but I could be completely wrong here...

Also, Julias sister Inga Christina was living at 596 Lawson according to their father's inventory estate in 1910. I find her there also in the 1900 census on the previous page (married Linden), also with incorrect birth info. She was born November 4th 1860 but census states February 1866...

Anyway, Julia died in 1936 and this is her on findagrave:
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/169674481/julia-e-swanson

The August Swanson who died 1946 is buried in the space next to her:
https://sv.findagrave.com/memorial/169674561/august-swanson

Just wanted to see if his birth date was written in his death record...common name so he could be someone complete different as well...lets see
