I am looking for Gustav B Swan who was born 25 Mar 1827 (but I don't know where). He left Sweden and arrived in America in 1869. (His middle name might have been
Bengt, as he used the Americanized form Benton.)
He was married to Maria G Parsson or Persson, b. 14 Jul 1839, also in Sweden but I don't know where. I believe Persson was the name of her first husband, and she arrived in America while married to him and then he died. Afterwards she married Gustav Swan; I think they married in America. I know this information is not very much to go on!

Whatever the arrangement was between them, I think it was friendly, because Karl Erik's oldest daughter Anna lived with Carolina and the younger children.
The youngest daughter, Carolina Elinda, was my grandmother. When her mother died, she moved to the house at Öna and she loved living there. She always said her older brother and sisters were very good to her, and she kept in touch with them all her life.

Karl Erik Lundgren was not just a carpenter. but the half-owner of an iron foundry in Mora; his partner was A.G. Fernstrom.
He first married Johanna Maria Berglund, who was the mother of his first three children a son and two daughters. She died in 1884.
Carolina Jonsson was actually born Carolina Jonasdotter; she had her first child Elsa Maria (7 Jun 1879) in Stockholm at the age of 29, with no husband. She began using the name Jonsson and supported herself as a baker.
What happens next is what I haven't found out; somehow she and Karl Erik met and decided to marry. I think they might have met through the Methodist church -- if there was one in Mora. Perhaps if there was no actual church building the congregation met in someone's home.
When they married, they moved to Mora, forming a family with his three children and her daughter. They had two children together, Erik Fridolf and Elinda Carolina (who was my grandmother).
Carolina died in 1906 and I wondered if she had moved back to Falu Kristine because she was suffering from some illness.
Elsa Maria took Karl Eric's name, and she emigrated alone to the U.S. in 1903, where she met another Swedish immigrant and married him; eventually they had 5 children.
Erik Fridolf also went to the United States to join his sister, but he never reached her. and the family never knew what had happened to him.
Two of Karl Eric's daughters married Methodist pastors, and I wonder if there is some source of information about people who were Methodists at this time? Would the Lutheran pastor have all the information on them too?

Hej! My great-grandfather Carl Eric Lundgren and Carolina Jonsson were married in 1890 and moved to Mora 17/7/1890. At the time of their marriage, she already had a daughter, and he had a son and two daughters. They had two children, Erik Fridolf and Carolina Elinda.
A few years later the couple separated and on 24/10/1894, Carolina moved with her three children and one of Carl Eric's daughters from Mora to Falu Kristine.
Carl Eric and Carolina never divorced; is there any way to find out why they separated, or what happened? They did not divorce, he kept on supporting the family, and one of his daughters stayed with her stepmother to care for her half sister and brother.
Unfortunately the parish pastor might not have had very much knowledge of the situation, as they were all Methodists and did not attend the parish church.

Thanks so much for this board; it has been very helpful to me in finding my family.
Now I'm looking for the parents of my great grandmother, Carolina Jonsson, who was born in Ransäter 13 May 1850. Her parents were Marit Larsdotter and Jonas Jonsson, both from Norra Räda; they were not married until 26 Dec 1850.
I haven't found any brothers or sisters, and I would like to know what happened to Jonas and Marit. I am also interested in where Carolina lived before she had an illegitimate daughter, Elsa Maria, in 1879 in Stockholm.
My grandmother never told me about her older sister, and in fact I don't think she knew that Elsa Maria was illegitimate. Elsa Maria emigrated to the Pacific coast of the US and lost touch with her family. I had no idea until recently that I have many cousins on the other side of the country!
My great-grandmother Carolina has quite a lot of mystery in her life; she apparently supported herself and her daughter independently working as a baker. And I have no idea how she met my great-grandfather, who was a widower with three children. Is there any way to find out where she went during her twenties?

Hej! I'm looking for the background of Johan Fredrik Blomqvist, f. 12 Nov 1819 in Mariestad. His father was Matthias Blomqvist, f. 1779, and his mother was Anna Johansdotter, f. 1793. I think he was the youngest in the family.
He married Christina Matilda Hagstrom, f. 27 Mar 1826, also from Mariestad, and I think they had several daughters. The youngest, Anna Christina, f. 1 Sept 1859, was my grandfather's mother. I haven't been able to find out who Christina Matilda's parents were.
I'm interested in when or if the family left Mariestad, or how exactly Anna Christina met her husband, Per August Johansson Sandahl; he was from Kronoberg, but I believe Sandahl was a soldier name.

I'm looking for information about my father's grandfather's first wife, Johanna Maria Berglund born 24 Mar 1847 in Trollhättan, Älvsborg. I am having difficulty finding the records from Älvsborg.
I know Johanna Maria married Carl Erik Lundgren in 1875, and she died giving birth to her fourth child in 1884 in Stora Kopparaberg. But I would like to know more about her family background.

Now -- I'm also looking for Eric Persson Östman. I have a birth date 15 Jan 1788, but I don't know where he was born. He was married to Stina Andersdotter f 31 Dec 1787, and they had three daughters, Greta, Johanna, and Stina, and one son, Eric. They moved to Säter eventually, but I don't know where they came from.
I'm also wondering what the origin of the name Östman is.

I am looking for information about Petter or Per Lundgren f 15 Juli 1794 in Oforsen, Värmland. But I can't find the parish book for Oforsen. Has this parish name changed? Petter Lundgren moved to Säter and married Brita Catrina Möller 14 Nov 1816.

Thank you so much for this information -- I had no idea, and I don't think my grandmother knew this either.
Now, another question -- was Margareta Sofia Berglund related to my great grandfather Carl Erik's first wife, Johanna Maria Berglund? Did the two brothers marry sisters?
Johanna Maria was not my ancestor; she died in 1884, and Carl Erik married my great grandmother, Carolina Jonsson, in 1890.
In fact, there is a mystery about that marriage; in 1890, the family - Carl Erik, Carolina, and his two daughters from his first marriage, Anna and Elin, all moved to Möra. Carl Erik and Carolina had two more children, Erik Fridolf and Elinda Carolina. Then -- I'm not sure when, exactly -- Carolina took her children and moved back to Kristine. They were apparently not divorced, but lived apart until she died in 1906. And they were not completely estranged, since Carl Erik's daughter Elin moved in with Carolina, possibly to help take care of the children.
To complicate things, all of them were Methodists, so the local Lutheran pastor might not have known the details. Do you think there's any way to find out what happened?

My great-grandfather, Carl Erik Lundgren, was born in Säter 14 Sept 1848. His parents were Per Erik Lundgren and his wife Johanna Ostman.
I think he had a younger brother, Per Johan, born 29 Juli 1854 in Kristine. I have not found any other information about Per Johan, and it is possible that he died in childhood. I am also trying to find out if Per Eric and Johanna had any other children; it seems unusual to have just two 6 years apart.

Hi, everyone! This photo is of Carolina Lundgren (f Jonsson, 1850) with a large group of children, including her children Erik Fridolf and Elinda Carolina. The photo was taken in about 1894-5, and I think it's in Falu Kristine. It appears to be a school, possibly a church school (Carolina was a Methodist.) Can anyone tell me anything about this picture? I'm trying to find the details of the life of Karl Johan Lundgren, born 12 Jun 1876 in Falu kristine, Kopparberg. I know he went with his family (Karl Erik Lundgren, Carolina Jonsson, and their children) when they moved to Mora in 1890. He eventually moved to Åmål, in Älveborgs, but I don't know when.
I think he never married. I would also like to know what profession he eventually followed.

Also, I have a photo I think other people would like to see. My grandmother attended the Mora Folkhögskola in 1909-1910. I have a photo that includes portraits of 10 instructors and all of the 47 students, plus Anders Zorn, who sponsored the school at that time. Can I post the photo in this forum?

There is another mystery about Carolina Jonsson I would like to solve. I have a photograph of her from about 1890, and she's sitting with a large group of young children. I have no idea who they are or what she's doing there. Can I post the photo and ask you all to tell me what you think it is about? Or is there another part of the forum where I should post a photo?

Eva, thank you so much for all your help. It looks like Fridolf was heading for Spokane, Washington, which is where his half-sister Elsa Maria settled with her husband, Nick Blomberg. It seems that he never got there. Am I right in guessing that the notation in the Mora register is about the same as missing, presumed dead? Usually, in the US, when a person has been missing for 7 years, he can be declared legally dead by court order, so his estate, etc, can be finally disposed of.
I still haven't been able to find Elsa Maria's birth record, or who her father was - I don't think Carolina was married. In the census her birth place is given as Stora Tuna, and in her citizenship papers she put Stockholm, but I couldn't find anything in either place.
Elsa Maris, the oldest child of Carolina, had five children and became a US citizen in 1940. She has descendants living in Washington State. I don't think she and my grandmother, Elinda Karolina, the youngest child, were ever in touch again. My grandmother moved to the US with her husband, Ragnar Sandahl, and two sons in 1926, but she did return to Sweden twice to visit her family.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad the story wasn't true. Though I still don't understand why she lived apart from her husband. It wouldn't have been a legal arrangement in the 1890's, would it?
But now I have another mystery - what happened to Fridolf? Carolina and Karl Erik's son was called Erik Fridolf Emmanuel, born 18 10 1890 in Mora. He apparently left home at about age 13 and no one knows what happened to him. What would become of a runaway boy in those days?

I'm trying to solve a mystery. This is the story: Carolina Jonsson, born 13 May 1850 in Ransäter, Varmlands, married Karl Erik Lundgren, born 1848, in 1890. He was a widower with one son and two daughters, and she had an 11 year old daughter, Elsa Maria. The whole family moved to Mora, where two more children were born, Erik Fridolf and Elinda Carolina. Then, for unknown reasons, Carolina and her three children left Mora and moved to Falu Kristine. Karl Erik's daughter Anna Maria lived with them for a few years, and her sister Elin stayed with their father in Mora.
In 1903, Elsa Maria went to America. And in 1906, Carolina's two children, Erik Fridolf and Elinda Carolina, were taken back to Mora and told that their mother had become ill and died.
Carolina Lundgren f. Jonsson is listed as deceased in the church household register; but her name is not listed in the parish death register.
The story in the family is that she did not die in 1906, but became mentally ill and was sent to a hospital, where she died years later. Elinda Carolina (my grandmother!) was not told about this until she was an adult.
Can anyone tell me how to find out what really happened?
