I am searching for 1880 and/or 1890 census information on my ancestors Carl Gustaf Larsson and his wife Ulrika Eleanora Wahlstrom who I believe were living in Rodsten, Ostergotland. Carl may have died in 1883. I am also trying to verify any surving children who may have been living between these periods. Jim

I notice that Robert in the above discussion has provded an image of an actual individual detailed copy of the flyttningsbevis. I have an ancestor named August Malmstrom who left Grebo, Ostergotland, permanantly for America on August 26, 1881. Do all the parishes have such detailed copies as the one above and if so, what source can I obtain a copy from? Jim

Hello I am inquiring about swedish land customs in Ostergotland in the 19th century. Were there any laws in which first sons only would inherit their father's land, leaving the other sons out? My ancestor was not a first son and emigrated to America in 1881. His oldest brother (the first son) eventually takes control of the farm a decade later. I am trying to pinpoint a motivation for his emigrating permanantly to America. Jim

I am searching for a family record of OLOF SVENSSON. Born about 1669. Deceased 1736-06-14 in Sarpebo, Grebo . I am looking for his possible daughter, Margareta Olofsdotter who married Måns Pehrsson on October 14, 1722 (AD Online : Grebo C:2, p 281). This may not be her father but Måns and Margareta lived at Sarpebo at the time of their marriage. If anyone can let me know if this is a match I would be most grateful. Jim Reilly

Hello Hans Thank you so much for this information. I consulted documents from the LDS Library records here in America and found the birth date for Pehr Mansson but as they were on microfilm the original handwriting of the parish priest was quite difficult to translate. You have given me much to work with. I will follow-up on the link you included and try to match Margareta's father. Best regards Jim Reilly

I am looking for information on Petrus Mansson who was born August 4, 1730 in Norrby(?), near Grebo in Östergotland. His son was Magnus Petersson born December 20, 1774 in Norrby. I would like to know if anyone could locate Petrus's parents as well as his date of death? Jim

Monica and Britt-Marie Thankyou so much for passing along this information. Yes August Fridolf was my great-great grandfather who emigrated in 1881 to Connecticut and never returned to Sweden. I read Ingela Martenius's piece on Swedish emigration and August seems to have left Sweden for more than one of those reasons. He did live on a farm called Bjorntorp in Grebo and may have been doing military service before he emigrated. There is an entry in the Grebo Husförhorslangd 1876-1880 AI:13 p. 90 line 6 under a column that reads Fräjd och särskilda anleckningar? But I was not sure how this tranlated. Jim

Ingela Sorry for the confusion. Yes, my ancestor emigrated in 1881 to Bridgeport, Connecticut in the USA and settled for perhaps a dozen years keeping his name on documents, census reports and city directories as Malmström. Then after 1900 the m was dropped and the family and any subsequent children were referred to as Malstrom, which is used today. We have no information as to why this decision to change the name occurred. Jim

Ingela Thank you for the Malmstrom information. The Malmstroms were my ancestors from Grebo, Ostergotland who emigrated to the United States in 1881 and the name was not changed until around 1900 when it became Malstrom. Jim

Monica, Thankyou so much for posting the photograph. It is fantastic. My ancestors, the Malmstroms lived in Bjorntorp during the 19th century. I did not know that an area like Bjorntorp was an actual farmhouse because based on some of my research other families than my own are listed in Bjorntorp as well. Does this mean that other houses exit on this farm lot too? Jim

Hello from America: I am inquiring about about my ancester, Carl Frederik Malmstrom who lived in Bjorntorp in Grebo and died in 15 October, 1895. His wife Kristina Katarina Johansdotter (born 15 September 1821)remained in the village after Carl's death along with her son Otto Fredrik Malmstrom and his family. Between 1891 and 1894 the oldest son, Carl Adolf Malmstrom appears to inherit or control 1/4 mantal of land that belonged to Carl. Does anyone have information about what happened to Carl's wife and the land into the 20th century? Any responses in English would be most appreciated. Jim
