Hi Ove,

David's grandson Casper Fredrik ROBERT af Jochnick married my great-great aunt Amalia Wilhelmina (Mimmi) Brandelius, Fredsberg, Skaraborg 1867.

Would you be able to tell me which Widow Brandelius, who her husband was?

Emil Biljer, kallas vid modern Betty Brandelius bouppteckning i Skara 1857 för grosshandlare i Göteborg. Han föddes 1824-11-20 i Skara domkyrkoförsamling som Lars Vilhelm Emilius Biljer. Fadern var Skararådmannen Johan Niklas Biljer(1784-1837). Någon som vet mer om denne Emil?

Are you still intersted after all this time? I am related to Betty.

I do not have a straight answer but I have done a lot of research to find and track an artist ancestor and this is how I go about it, taking every hint, every lead...

I would google (von W) with words like "pastel artist", etc. The site Runeberg.org may have scanned books with his name that contain stories of his life, including the artists he liked then you look up those artists to match timing and style, or he may have had a portrait done by the same artist.

I find it interesting to see color slashes/marks on the side of portrait. Perhaps one of his students did the portrait? I would research if that was something that art students did, research his students and local art schools. Google "pastel portraits" around the same time, locality and compare styles, etc.

Also I have found Swedish museums and Community Associations to be very helpful with online information or I simply email them.

I hope someone has better info. Good luck!

Hi Jan-Erik,

I use the program FamilySearch.org to find many records. It is a free service to create family trees and I would suggest you create an account there to get all the links to the records on Jan Olof as there are too many to attach here. Many links come from ArkivDigital and include scans of original books.

I attached a screenshot of one of the later records showing Jan Olof and his children. I hope you can see it!

Yes, I see how you are searching for court information and the process for monetary support for illegitmate children. I could only offer what has worked for me but it appears you already knew!

Meanwhile I was searching in FamilySearch and found the baptism record for Jan Olof (which you have). But I also stumbled across him under a different last name (sorry if you already have this info) which may assist in finding his paternity.

I am as interested as you are about your court question. Good luck!

Hi Jan-Erik,

He could be the father. In my experiences with my family's illegitimate children, an attendee at birth or baptism does not correllate to parentage. He could be a family friend, military acquaintance, neighbor, distant cousin, etc.

Over the life of the person born to one parent on a birth certificate, I have found that in the description area of the census the fathers were often mentioned: "son of ...." so be sure to read everything. When the children reach adulthood they often have a new last name, the paternalized or last name passed down from the biological father.

This is how it has worked out for me so far. I will be interested to hear about searching salaries.

Adolf har diskuterats även här, https://forum.rotter.se/index.php?topic=56449.msg817027#msg817027.

I got his sister's name from the registration post above, she stayed in Seattle.

I found him as a cook in a logging camp in CA, 1930, spelled "Grisull" so I just corrected the record:"United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9R42-NMC?cc=1810731&wc=QZFS-CVC%3A648807101%2C651792401%2C648924901%2C1589282361 : 8 December 2015), California > El Dorado > Georgetown > ED 4 > image 12 of 14; citing NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002). .

Keep searching with different spellings. He was easy to find in Family Search as above. Good luck!

Through logging in to a local library, American residents with a library card can browse some paywalled databases.

I couldn't find his death in CA, perhaps he went back to Seattle? Did he have a second name?

FYI His sister has different spellings of her maiden name before marrying Frank Carlston in Seattle: Grasell, Grissell.

Sven, you're the cherry on top. Thank you!!

I can't wait to share more of the information I have been given here with my dad (Carl's son). He's ill & homebound far from me but our on-going geneology project has him smiling. Carl died suddenly in 1952 with many stories still untold so my dad's been waiting a long time to know his family.

Someday I hope I can help others as I have been helped here.

EDITING: His future wife was German/Swedish, immigrated to the USA with her whole family and married Carl right away. I wonder if Carl met her father while he was in Germany? He wouldn't have met his wife, she was born that year! You have given much more to think about.

Carl mustered off the steamer Julia in Rostock, Germany, on 11 Dec 1906. His title was Båtsman.

Sven, thank you! Perhaps I can use this information to help me find him leaving in 1907 or 1908.
Carl Martin was the illegitmate son of Bengt Johan Gustaf Brandelius, who died 2 mos after Carl was born. Carl's mother, Ulrika Lundgren, married Anders Alrid Andersson Burk when Carl was 3 and one month later he was sent to foster families (as Lundgren, Gustafsson, and Brandelius) until in 1892 his uncle (BJG's brother) Carl Adolf Bernhard Brandelius and his wife Christina Maria Olsdotter became his foster parents. After a few years census recordings stop putting "foster" before "son". I hope they had a good relationship.

Please note that the above referenced listing in the books, as you know, states his profession as "styrman", ~chief mate/first office and it also states that he was enlisted in the navy with registration nr: 225 207/1905.
For sailors there was an institution called "sjömanshus" were sailors registered. Some of their records are available on line but I don't know if it is true in your case.

Thank you, Nils. I am finding military information difficult to sort through but you are right, I should be able to find something through his number so I will try something else.

18
He was moved 1910 to the New Book page 959, Skövde stadsförsamling (R) AIIa:9 (1910-1924) Bild 165 / sid 959 (AID: v114301.b165.s959, NAD: SE/GLA/13489). 1913 he was moved to "Bok över obefintliga", where people were placed when they were not present in the parish and they did not know where they had moved. That could have happened any time between 1907 and 1913, as he moved without tell where he went. He was for sure a sailor, thus away sometimes.

Thanks Leif! He was definitely in Australia by summer 1908 so I am guessing he jumped ship there. Maybe that's why I can't trace the ship name that was in the newspaper article about Carl in NSW. He probably lied.

As an American my best guesses are:

father surname: Olsson. His first name may start with a P (Pehr?).
mother surname: Nilsdotter. Her first name seems to be shortened; starts with an E.
location: Kulleboda

I couldn't locate them in 1777 marriages. I hope someone else does better for you!

I am trying to figure out how and when my grandfather left Sweden. I have information on him getting to San Francisco from Australia in 1910 as a passenger but how and when did he leave for NSW Australia from Sweden?

Carl Martin Brandelius b 18 Aug 1884 was in Skovde 31 Dec 1906 then in NSW Australia in 1908.

The last record I have of him in Sweden is living with his uncle/guardian Carl Adolf Bernhard Brandelius from 1906 to at least 31 Dec 1906 in Sköfde, Skaraborg, Tomt 78 then at some unrecorded date they moved to .... ?? (highlights in pic). It shows he became a Styrman, 225 227/1905 so perhaps he left as a sailor?

Also, I cannot find a photo of him in uniform, any advice? Thank you!!

Does this information still stand? I've been doing research for years and found two Brandelius lines (1 is mine) but I have never heard of the people you are looking for with those dates.

Do you have more info? Thanks!

It might be her mother, if her father happened to be named Anders Andersson.

I found their Fredsberg wedding in 1791 but it doesn't give birth location. attached

You may have to go forward in time with the children and see if their marriage or death info has birth location for the mother.

Good luck!
