I am trying to research my great grandfather but am having great difficulty with his correct name. Can someone tell me if Sallesson is a Swedish name

Could someone please help me with emigration records from Goteburg.  My great grandfather emigrated from there in 1856.  His name in Australia was James Sales and he would have been about 20 years old at the time of emigration and was born in Lysekil.  Destination was possibly Western Australia I think.  Thank you

I know this is a 'long shot' but I've just been looking through other disucssions on this website (bearing in mind I don't speak/read Swedish) and I came across a page about the name Sale.  Under Slakter/ovriga/slakter S.  Any connection do you think.  I obviously don't know what it all says.

4
I don't know any details about when James died.  Unfortunately my own father died in 1967 when I was 5 and my mother doesn't know much at all about my Dad's family.
In relation to inherited names I can see a connection with Rosella Justina (1st child of James & ANnie).  Rosella was her mother's name and Justina was James mother's name.  The next child was James Augustus obviously named after his father and maybe Augustus was another name of his paternal grandfather - Julius AUgustus Sales??  My grandfather was Francis Everard - Everard (Eberhard)being his maternal grandfather's name.

On their marriage certificate (30/3/1869) it says that the consent of Rosella Maier had to be given to the marriage as she was under the age of 21.  I have found out that she was born in 1851 so therefore only 18 when she married, whereas James was approximately 34.  She was born in Bathurst and I have confirmed that her father (Eberhard Maier) was born in Germany but no details of mother, only her name - Rosalia Schumacker.  James & Annie's children were born as follows, Rosella 1871, James 1873, Minnie 1876, Pauline 1879, Francis (my grandfather) 1881 and Emily 1885.  James died in 1908 and Annie died in 1939.

Hi there, Could anybody have a look at emigration records for me please to try and find my great grandfather.  He came to Australia between 1854-1856. His first destination may have been Perth or Fremantle. His name was James Sales.  I think he may have changed his name at some stage though.  According to his death certificate he was born in 1835 in Lysekil but I haven't been able to confirm this as yet.  He departed Goteborg on the Sir Robert Peel.  Thanks very much.

James was married in Australia to Annie Maier in 1869.  I have the original certificate but has no details of mother or father on there for either of them.  A copy of the death certificate I have is where I got the info. from as it lists Julius Sales - Mariner & Justina Lang as his parents.  Place of birth Lysekil, Sweden.  The informant was his daughter Rosella - a sister of my grandfathers. I also have a copy of his naturalisation certificate which doesn't say much except James Sales a native of Gottenberg in Sweden aged 52 years (certificate dated 1888) is a miner and arrived in NSW on the Sir Robert Peel in the year 1856  I have looked at quite a few shipping records here and can find no record of that ship arriving here at that time.  I have confirmed however on the Regional Archives Lund website that the Sir Robert Peel did leave Goteborg in 1850, 1852 and 1854.  It lists its owner as James Dickson & Co but has no details of destination.  Shipping records would be a great place to start as I'm wondering if his father was a mariner he may have worked on this ship rather than been a passenger.  I do not know if his parents came with him to Australia- I'm guessing not but I don't know.
Thanks again for your help so far.  If you can think of anything else let me know, or maybe I might have to try and do some more 'digging' here.

Thanks so much for what you've done so far.  I have subscribed to genline.com.se and today I have gone through some 'household examination' files-I think they were 1890.  I was simply looking for a Julius & Justina and not taking note of the surname.  Do you have access to those databases, as I did find an Adolf Julius & Emma Justina in there but couldn't read the rest of it.  I couldn't seem to cut and paste the page to put on this site for translation.  Any help would be appreciated

Thanks so much for looking anyway.  I really don't know about his parents however I'm inclined to agree with you, and that is that he came by himself.  He was 20 years old at the time.  On his naturalisation certificate it says he arrived by the Sir Robert Peel from Gotteburg in 1856.
I really don't know what else to look for!! What about the household examination records for Lysekil in 1835/36, could that be an option?

Can somebody please help me with births in Lysekil.  I'm trying to find a link somewhere to my great grandfather.  I believe he was born in 1835/36.  He changed his name on arriving in Australia and unfortunately I don't know his original Swedish name.  Is it possible to look for a male birth in Lysekil in 1835/36 with the parents names of Julius & Justina.  His name in Australia was James Sales and on his death certificate his parents are listed as Julius Sales & Justina Lang.

All the information I have is as follows - On his marriage cert. it has his name as simply James Sales (no mother or father details are listed). Yes he was married here in Australia.  On his death cert. it says simply James Sales. Father's name Julius Sales (Mariner) and Justina Lang.  Place of birth Lysekil, Sweden.  Been in AUstralia approx 53 years (died in 1908). I really wish I had more information but I don't I'm afraid.
Thanks

Sorry I meant to put that in.  On his marriage & death certificate he lists his name as James Sales.Through a previous discussion I've had with someone on this site they suggested rather than trying to guess the surname look for births in 1835 in Lysekil for his parents.  I think he's changed his surname
Thank you

I am trying to track my great grandfather who emigrated to Australia in approx. 1856 on the Sir Robert Peel.  On his death certificate it has listed his place of birth as Lysekil, Sweden and his parents names were Julius Sales & Justina Lang.  I believe he was born in 1835.  I suspect he has changed his name upon arriving in Australia as I don't think Sales is a Swedish name.  Any suggestions of where I might be able to get help finding births in Lysekil.
Thanks you

I'm trying to find some sort of trace of my great grandfather who emigrated to Australia. He was born in Lysekil and on his marriage/death certificate his name was James Sales.  I belive this was not his original name.  Has anyone any idea what might have been a Swedish name similar to Sales

Sales, James
I am trying to track my great grandfather who came to Australia in approx 1856 on the Sir Robert Peel.  I can't find any record of the name Sales in Sweden at all and think it may have been changed.  On his death certificate it says his parents names were Julius & Justina Lang and he was a mariner.  I don't think the Sir Robert Peel was a passenger ship and suspect that maybe his father was working on it and that's how they got to Australia.  He was born in 1835 in Lysekil, Goteborg och Bohus.  Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated about mariners, emigration etc.
