Landskapshandlingar / Questions about the Tiondelängder
« skrivet: 2022-02-22, 02:53 »
Hello all!
I am currently researching my ancestors in Madesjö parish in Kalmar. I've used the Mantalslängder as far as back they go for the area. As such, I've begun using the Landskapshandlingar to trace my ancestors. I've used both the Jordebok sections of the Landskapshandlingar as well as the Tiondelängder sections, although I've found the latter to be much more complete and useful.
   My questions concern the Tiondelängder:
       1. Who paid tithes?
       2. How much did they pay? 10%?
       3. In Småland, there seems to be a Tiondelängder section for every Landskapshandlingar. However, in other areas, such as Uppland, there is rarely a Tiondelängder. Why is this? Are they archived in another location, have they been destroyed, or did they never exist in the first place?
       4. Do you have any other tips for researching the Landskapshandlingar?

Thank you so much! The people on this forum have been such a great help, especially for an American like me who is unfamiliar with the language!

Arnö / Westerling Parish???
« skrivet: 2021-11-27, 23:11 »
Hello! I need help interpreting a household examination that lists Karin Nilsdotter as being born in "Westerling"? in 1701. I have never heard of this parish and would like some help finding it. Thank you!

Hello all! I am currently researching Jöns Nilsson who resided in a place called Vreta in Kulla, Uppsala for most of his life. As I do not speak Swedish, I would appreciate some assistance in interpreting an annotation in a mantals length.
The annotation is made in the 1734 mantals length. It says something about a Marit Holm.[1] Thank you!

Hello all!
I have been working a great deal with the Mantalslängder lately to find my 17th century ancestors and have been quite successful. However, as there are no ecclesiastical records for the time, it is not possible to know their true birth, marriage, and death dates. As such, how should I estimate such? Specifically, I was wondering if there is any genealogical standard for estimating birth dates. The one I have noticed most often is substracting 25 years from the first known child's birth date.
Is there some standard I should follow or should I merely use the sources I have to make an estimate? Thank you!

UPDATE:
After an immense amount of searching around the parishes of Skokloster and Häggeby in the mantals tax records for anyone named Herman, I found someone I believe may be Hans Hermansson's father. First appearing in the mantals tax records in Häggeby in 1745[1] and disappearing in 1747[2], Herman Hindriksson is a single man living in a place called Skrik??? (I'm not sure what that means. If anyone would transcribe that word, it would be very appreciated.)
Although more research is required to confirm their relationship, after an exhaustive search of the parishes where Hans Hermansson resided during his lifetime around his birth year of approximately 1700, which yielded no one named Herman, I suspect that Herman Hindriksson is the elderly father of Hans Hermansson in these mantals tax records.
Also, would anyone be wishing to translate the note next Herman Hindriksson in the 1747 mantals tax record? Perhaps such will yield useful information. Thank you!

Thank you for your help Mr. Bergh! I have taken noted of Hans Hermansson in the past, but I haven't had Arkiv Digital until recently, so thank you for alerting me to that compelling evidence that Hans Hermansson is, indeed, the father of Jan Hansson. I know Jan Hansson was born sometime around 1718, according to a household examination and his death record and that he was married to his wife, Margareta Matsdotter, sometime before 1749, as they had their first child then. What made me hesitant to confirm Jan Hansson's father as Hans Hermansson would be the fact that Jan Hansson would have been about 31 years old by the time he married, which, if I'm not mistake, is a bit irregular.
Nevertheless, additional evidence has come to light; specifically, I have been able to trace Hans Hermansson back to 1721, to the parish of Skokloster, in which is he is listed as married in the mantals tax record.[1]. Moreover, in the 1732 tax record[2], a note is made stating that he moved to Häggeby, confirming that the Hans Hermansson of Skokloster is also the Hans Hermansson of Häggeby. Because, in 1721, Hans Hermansson was married and according to the evidence you've presented, I'm almost certain that Jan Hansson is the son of Hans Hermansson.
I don't wish to get ahead of myself, but the name Hermansson intrigued me as I've never encountered such a name before. Are you familiar with that name? Is it common in Uppsala? If not, do you know where I should begin searching to learn more about Hans Hermansson? Thank you so much for help, again; you've just helped me break down a brick wall that has been plaguing my family for generations!

Hello all! I recently came across a probate record my ancestor, Jan Hansson, who died in a place called Nederhassla in the parish of Häggeby in Uppsala on 26 April 1766. I have had great difficulty finding any relatives of his but recently came across his estate inventory! As I have little knowledge of the language and handwriting, would anyone be willing to look over the probate record and see if any clues concerning Jan's birthplace, family, etc. are present within the probate record? Thank you so much!

Häggeby / Interpretation of Household Record
« skrivet: 2021-06-21, 05:48 »
Hello all! I'm researching a Karin Andersdotter and I believe I've found her family in a Household Record in the parish of Nysätra in Uppsala. However, I'm having troubling interpreting the Household Record. Specifically, what does "gosrun cander" mean? Is Karin actually the daughter of the pigan Anna, rather than Anders Larsson and his wife Anna? I've attached the record below. Thank you in advance.

Hello all! I'm currently researching my 8th great-grandfather who was named Jöns Nilsson and resided in Kulla parish in Uppsala from about 1717 to 1736 in a place called Vreta, according to the national copies of the Mantalslängder. Nilsson appears on the 1736 Mantalslängd but unfortunately no national copy of the Mantalslängder exists until 1742, in which he has vanished. I have checked the death book for the time and have found no mention of his death either. I don't have access to the county copies of the Mantalslängder, so I was wondering if anyone would be willing to examine the county copies of the Mantalslängder from 1736 to 1742 for Kulla Parish in Uppsala in Arkiv Digital and look for clues at to where he and his family might have gone? (Perhaps a comment in the margin?) Thank you!

Hmm, I actually can't see any weak line in my copy. I should really invest in ArkivDigital again! Thank you for your help, regardless!

Kulla / Kulla Household Record Comment
« skrivet: 2021-06-08, 05:17 »
Hello all! I'm trying to decipher a comment in Kulla (C) AI:1b (1717-1736) on Page 73. Specifically, I'm trying to to read a comment next to "Anders Larsson" who is listed under "Jöns Nilsson" in a place called Vreta. I believe Anders Larsson and his wife Anna are the parents of Jöns Nilsson's wife Karin, and I was wondering if this comment could assist me in confirming such by leading me to other records. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, it may be. The wedding took place on 27 October 1748 and is recorded in Övergran församling - CI:2 (1715-1739) on Page 42 of the book, near the bottom of the left page.

Hello all! I am currently researching Kristina Larsdotter from Övergran parish in Uppsala, but I am having difficulty reading two of the place names recorded in her marriage record. One is Kristina's family's residence (underlined in yellow in the attached image) and one is the location of the marriage (underlined in blue in the attached image.)

If anyone could interpret it, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you!

Here's a list of place names in Övergran which may or may not be of some assistance: https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/%C3%96vergran_Parish,_Uppsala,_Sweden_Genealogy
