Christa Lofquist

We are trying to trace the family line of my husband his father only knows a little about his father.  He came here in 1923 with his brother Janne, & sister Hilma.  He was born in 1900.  His father's name was Nils Lofquist and his mother was Lofstahelm Lysvik.  The ship manifest said they were from Sunne, Varmland Lan, Sverige.  I am hoping to find parrish records somewhere.  I am finding this searching might not get done due to the cost of it.  So any FREE help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Christa
Loftstahelm Lysvik is not a name - it must be a parish in Sweden!
I cannot help unfortuanately - but I am sure that somebody else will be able to.
I wish you the best of luck!

Lövstaholm was a manufacturing estate (bruk) in the parish of Lysvik.
The other places mentioned, Sunne and Norra Råda, are parishes that form a triangle with Lysvik: Lysvik is about 10 miles north of Sunne and both are some 18 miles west of Norra Råda. It's quite feasible to move around within this area, looking for work.
All the parishes are located in the county and province of Värmland.

Emma Nilsdotter was indeed born in Norra Råda; she was born 11 June 1873, daughter of Nils Olsson and Karolina Andersdotter. She was their fifth child after 12 years of marriage.
Her parents Nils and Karolina were married 26 December 1860 in Norra Råda parish. Nils is noted as a farmhand from Lakene and Karolina as a maid (female farmhand) at Loviseberg (both of course in Norra Råda parish).
Boxing Day was an immensely popular day for weddings: in 1860 as many as 10 couples were married on that date in this parish alone! The reason was of course that since Christmas is a time for festivities and parties a wedding could be held at little or no extra cost.

According to the Hfl (see below) 1871-75 the family consisted of:
Nils Olsson born 10 May 1828
Karolina Andersdotter born 25 November 1840
son Anders born 15 December 1862
son Nils born 22 December 1865
son Olof born 24 July 1867
daughter Amanda Karolina born 11 October 1871
daughter Emma born 11 June 1873
At the time (1871-75) Nils' parents were living with the family:
Olof Jansson born 02 December 1797
Anna Kajsa Boström born 1801 (the vicar has put a question mark for exact date, so her birth record may prove difficult to find); since Anna Kajsa has a family name instead of a patronymic - and this is Värmland - it seems probable that she was from a smithing family
Also Nils' sister:
Kajsa Olsdotter born 23 February 1839
with her illegitimate daughter:
Helena Ullström born 03 October 1872

This extended family lived at a croft called Jangberg in a district called Lakene (in the parish of Norra Råda). Jangberg is nearly equidistant from Norra Råda and Lysvik.
Since none of them has a note indicating which parish they were born in, they were probably all born in Norra Råda.

Birth record SCB-register Värmland Råda subparish (annexförsamling). GID 100017.28.34200
Marriage record SCB-register Värmland Råda subparish (annexförsamling). GID 100017.10.60900
Household examination roll (Husförhörslängd), commonly abbreviated as Hfl, Norra Råda AI:20, 1871-1875, page 162. GID 514.31.32000

GID refers to the fee-based  Genline site, which has published the Swedish church records up until about 1895-1897.

A little more:
I forgot to note that sometime in the 1871-75 period the family moves from Jangberg to Sågfallet, another croft in the same district (Lakene).
I also see I wrote the wrong name for Nils' mother; she is called Stina Kajsa (not Anna Kajsa).

In 1876-80 the family remains at Sågfallet. There's another child born to Nils and Karolina, Per Johan born 12 September 1880.
Nils' parents dies in this period too. Father Olof dies 25 May 1879 and mother Stina Kajsa 19 July 1880, both are noted as paupers and cause of death is in both cases noted as a question mark. Even as late as the last decades of the 19th century it was the vicar who tried to decide what the cause of death might have been; he was of course not medically trained but would recognize the most common illnesses.
Nils' sister has disappeared (quite literally, there is no note as to where she might have gone in the Hfl 1871-75 and in the Hfl of 1876-80 she is simply not there). Probably to compensate for the loss of Nils' sister, they hire a female farmhand called Ingeborg Olsdotter, born 19 Sep 1852 in the parish of Ekshärad; she moves in 05 Sep 1879.
Also, the two eldest boys are confirmed in this period: Anders in 1877 (30 Sep) and Nils in 1880 (03 Oct). Confirmation was supposed to take place when you were 15 so they were spot on.

The period of 1881-85 is very uneventful. The family is at Sågfallet croft. The female farmhand (Ingeborg) has left but all the children are still at home. Well, eldest son Anders musters and does his military service in 1883-84. And third son Olof is confirmed in 1882 (24 Sep), at the correct time.

In 1886-90 things start to happen. The family is still at the croft Sågfallet.
Eldest son Anders 22 June 1889 marries Stina Kajsa Svensdotter (born 28 April 1857 in Norra Råda; she is the daughter of Sven Bernhardsson and Gunilla Nilsdotter from Höje farm - she is socially in a better position since she is the daughter of a small-holder; a tenant, but a farmer, not a crofter); banns were first read 07 May 1889 (banns were read three Sundays in a row, after that you had to marry within four months). The couple first make their home at Stina Kajsa's parents' farm (where Anders is noted as son-in-law) but from 1890 (25 Jul) they live at Sågfallet (noted as lodgers).
Next son, Nils, does his military service in 1886-87 and more or less straight from there moves out 11 Jun 1887, to the parish of Alnö in the county of Västernorrland (very far to the north). However, he seems not to have liked it there since he moves back home already after four months, 07 Oct 1887.
Son Olof musters in 1888 but is deemed unfit for military service (frikallad).
Daughters Amanda Karolina and Emma are confirmed in 1886 (19 Sep) and 1888 (30 Sep) respectively, just as they should be.
Amanda Karolina then causes a minor scandal by becoming pregnant. However, she manages to save her reputation by becoming betrothed to the father, Per Johan Nilsson (born 26 June 1865 in Råda, son of Nils Olsson and Kajsa Persdotter) from one of the neighbouring crofts, Vestängen (modern spelling Västängen), before giving birth. Per Johan seems to have been a great friend of Amanda Karolina's brother Nils since he went with him to Alnö - and returned at the same time (also straight from military service). The betrothal took place 07 November 1890. Their daughter, Hilma Albina, was born 17 December 1890 (the vicar seems to have been a bit distracted at the time: in the Hfl he starts off by calling the daughter Elin Kristina, strikes that out and writes in Hilma Albina - and in the birth record he manages to call both mother and daughter Hilma Albina!).

1891-1896 all the family is at first still at Sågfallet.
However, daughter Amanda Karolina marries her Per Johan 07 February 1891 and moves with him to his parents croft, Vestängen (page 679). They have another child, son Johan Edvin Arthur, 08 February 1895.
Eldest son Anders and wife Stina Kajsa, still childless after three years of marriage, move out in 1892 (18 March), to the estate of Loviseberg (page 709) where he becomes a day-labourer. They stay there for three years and in 1895, still childless, they move to a croft under the farm Sörby (page 942). Sina Kajsa now mysteriously acquires the patronymic Larsdotter which is of course quite ridiculous since her father is Sven!
Son Nils assumes the family name of Englund sometime in this period.
Youngest son Per Johan seems to have been a bright kid since he is allowed to be confirmed already in 1894 (23 Sep), a year early.

This is where the records published by Genline end. To follow the family further on one has to contact the regional state archive (Landsarkivet); there should be no problem getting records up until 1936 - there is a 70 year restriction period on all personal records. However, death records 1947-2006, as well as census 1970 and 1980 are available. It is therefore quite possible to make the jump from the late 19th century to the present day.

Going backward:
In 1866-70 the family is still at the old croft, Jangberg. This early the family consists of only Nils and Karolina (here spelled Carolina) and he three oldest boys - and Nils' parents of course. Also living at the croft, until 1869, is Nils' brother Per Olsson, born 21 September 1842.
In this Hfl it is specifically noted that they're all born in this parish, Råda (it didn't become Norra Råda (Northern Råda) until 1885).

Right now I am having trouble finding where Nils and Emma got married.  They are believed to be Nils Helge's parents.  There is lots of info about thier children but I don't have a marriage date yet.  Also so far it is a mystery as to who is the parents of Nils Gustaf Lofquist.

This is so much fun.  Every one has been so full of information.  I can't wait to show my father in law.  He did not even know his grandparents and now we will have back several generations.

Nils and Emma did not get married before 1898, at least not in Norra Råda parish. The SCB-register of marrage records ends with 1897. In 1900 Emma is married with two children, so she must have married in 1898, 1899 or 1900 (prior to the census).

However, the marriage probably did take place in Norra Råda since this is where Emma lives until at least 1896 and then again in 1900. But she may of course also have decided to go into service in another parish, e.g. Sunne where her husband was born.

To find the marriage date, you can contact the Regional Archive in Karlstad:

Nils Gustaf Persson Löfquist was born Sep 19, 1866 in Löfåsen (modern spelling Lövåsen), Sunne. He had a twin brother Per Johan who died Nov 1, 1867. The twins were christened in Lysvik parish Sep 21, 1866.
The parents were Per Nilsson (a shoemaker) b. Nov 9, 1826 in Sunne and Johanna Håkansdotter b. 1827 in Ekshärad.
They also had daughters:
Maja Lisa b. Jun 15, 1857 in Sunne
Karolina b. Oct 1, 1860 in Sunne
Anna b. Jun 17, 1870 in Sunne

At least Nils Gustaf and his sister Anna took the surname Löfquist. Anna Löfquist emigrated to North America in July 1892, Nils Gustaf Löfquist went there too in April 1894 but returned to Löfåsen, Sunne, in Feb 1897.

WOW!  How on earth do you get that info out of Genline?  I am not doing something right.  Can you just search by name or do you have to scan all the records?

Isn't that strange that Nils and Anna took the last name of Lofquist?  So Nils Gustaf had two last names Persson & Lofquist right?  This is so neat.

Persson was his patronymic as his father's first name was Per (Per's son). Anna's patronymic was Persdotter (Per's daughter). Those who also wanted a surname often picked a part of it from the farm or village where they lived, in this case Löfåsen ('The Leaf Ridge'). Löf (löv) is 'leaf' in English and quist (kvist) is 'twig'.
If you know the place where a person/family lived in the parish (usually you get that information in the birth records), you look for an index (Gårds/Byaregister or just Register) at the beginning or the end of the household examination roll (Husförhör).

For exemple:
Värmland, Sunne, AI:60 1871-1875, click the first 'Gårds/Byaregister'. On the handwritten right page you will find 'Register' and 'Löfåsen....507'.
Go to p. 507 (which is the first of the Löfåsen pages) and turn over page by page until you find Per Nilsson, Johanna Håkansdtr and the children (p. 512).

I have been searching Ellisisland.org for the immagration records for Nils Gustaf lofquist but so far nothing.  Maybe they spelled it differently.  I will keep trying.

Christa,

I use Stephen's Morse's portal to the Ellis Island records.

http://stevemorse.org/

Usually I use his white form. You can use starts with (for example) to perhaps find him if you aren't sure how the name would have been spelled or transcribed. The indexers were not necessarily good at reading names of Swedes. I've seen some very strange transcriptions of a name which looked very clear to me.

Not all people entered through the port of New York: Ellis Island, by the way. There were other very popular ports.

This site provides information on how to find passenger arrival manifests.

Nils Lofkvist (Note the spelling.) arrived on 22 August 1923 in New York (from the Ellis Island site). I entered 1923 on the white form of Stephen Morse's site and starts with Lof and that is all. There were two hits and he was the one from Sunne.

The form is typed and he is on line 12. He sailed on the S.S. Kungsholm, which was a Swedish American Line ship. It sailed from Gothenburg on 11 August 1923(apparently a direct sailing; Gothenburg is the English spelling of Göteborg.) There are two pages to the manifest and it opens with the second page. If you close that page and click next, you will see a copy of the same side of the manifest. Never fear. Close that page again and click Next one more time and the first side of the manifest page shows up.

It is FAR less expensive, by the way, to order the microfilm of this arrival from a Family History Center and print it there than it would be to pay the huge price the Ellis Island site expects. They have disabled some printing functions and you won't get a copy of the entire manifest from your printer unless someone here can suggest a way to do that.

Judy,
This page discribes how to save a manifest image. I came across the link in one of the Swedish threads a while ago.

The instructions on the page Anna-Carin indicated seems to me to be a lot of trouble about nothing at all. There's no need to disable Java script and other fancy stuff. You just use Steven Morse's manifest page:

 http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/mm.htm
At the bottom, fill in Month, Day, Year - this will give you Series and Roll. If you've already found the person you're looking for Ellis Island obligingly gives you the Frame (called page on Ellis Island), otherwise you'll have to page through it manually.
In this case:
Month: Aug, Day: 22, Year: 1923, Series: T715, Roll: 3355, Frame: 710 (and 709, but 710 is the first page, 709 the second).
Now, make sure Display on separate page is ticked and hit the Display button.
The manifest is now displayed on a separate page in your browser (of whatever brand) and you can print it or save it or do whatever you want with it.

In the case of manifests that cover two pages it's easy to splice them together in any image processing program. Then you print the combined image on a large sheet of paper (A3 as we say in Sweden, abot twice the size of the American legal format) and you've really got something you can pin on your wall. Free of charge too, unless you count the cost of ink and paper...

By the way, I always note my Ellis Island source this way (Series, Roll, Frame, Line) since that gives direct access to the page if I want to look at it again (I don't usually print manifests of emigrating second cousins etc.).

Christa,
Nils Gustaf Persson Löfquist is listed as N.G. Löfqvist at Ellis Island. He arrived May 19, 1894 onboard The Venetia, port of departure Gothenburg, destination Murinette (or Marinette?).

You will find him here, number 72:

Since Lofkvist Jr. headed for Marinette in Wisconsin in 1923, I think we can safely assume that that's where Lofqvist Sr. went in 1894.

BTW, the origin of Löfstaholm, Lysvik is clear on the manifest from 1923. This is where Lofqvist Sr. lived in 1923.

Lofqvist Sr. is on manifest page nr 41 if you wish to use Steven Morse's manifest page (or if you want to note the exact source - so many of us genealogists do after all).

Thank you, Anna-Carin and Ingela, for the printing instructions for the Ellis Island site. I'm sure I'll need those as I continue doing my research.

They print so nicely.  I work at a print shop so I have access to some nice equipment.  WOW.  Thanks everyone.  Now to get all this in a book to share with the rest of the family.  I could not have done this with out you all.  Now my mother in law wants me to trace her family.  LOL  Look what I have started.  I am hoping to use some of the things you all showed me here to help.  I will be looking at Germany and Ireland now for her.
