Swedish names / SV: Friberg, Charles John / Carl Johan

This really is a mystery.

I have census information from Wales in 1901 and 1911 to indicate that "my" Charles John Friberg was in Wales by this time, and married to Ellen Lewis.  My own searches found the Charles John in the USA, but the timings didn't seem right and there's been nothing said about living in America within the family, but then he did die before my father was born, and my grandfather and grandmother both died before I became interested in this.

However, and here's the interesting bit for me.

The Carl Johan we're discussing was the son of Anders and Johanna Friberg (Nilsdotter)

They had a child named Alma Antoinette Friberg who died very soon after birth.

My grandmother also had a sister with the same name who survived and died when she was 47.

To me, this is circumstantial evidence that it's the same person, but the part about America means he's lost a wife in Sweden, moved to America, married a second time and had more children, then for some reason left America for Wales around the late 1890s, faked his own death(?), and married Ellen in 1894 making her wife number 3 and responsible for possibly 10 or more children

I've actually sent off for a DNA testing kit so who knows, maybe that will help.

Quite a long time ago I posted a query on here about attempting to track the Swedish (and most interesting) side of my family tree. The main link I have is through my Great-Grandfather Charles John Friberg. Also known as Carl Johan and possibly Karl Johann.

Charles came to the UK in the late 1800s and appears to have been born in or near Malmo in to an Andreas Friberg. We have the attached certificate which shows he married Ellen Lewis in Cardiff, Wales on October 14th 1894. The certificate shows he is a widower and 27 years old suggesting a birth in 1867. However, other records including a census from 1901 & 1911 suggest he was actually born in 1858.  Charles died in October 1916 in Newport, South Wales.

As I mentioned earlier, some kind souls on the forum suggested two possible leads.

1 Carl Johan was married to Anna Christina Mauritsson, had a daughter Anna Signe Friberg (who emigrated to the USA as a child). Anna Christina sadly passed away not long after her daughter's birth.  This would track with Charles' details as a widower, but the birth year is 1 year out and the father's name for this person is Anders, not Andreas.

I would dearly love to get some clarity on this.  I'm willing to share whatever information I have.

In hope

Lyndon

it was the 1890 census which was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1921.   Later census's aren't showing her (so far) but I'm hoping it's because she was married or the name altered during that time.  The problem is, New York was an entry point, so she could well have moved to other states between her arrival, and the next census.

That is something that were in practice, but I would say that it is not at all today. It is (usually) not errors.

Thanks so much for clearing that little one up.

On the topic of Anna Signe,  I think i've found the details of her arrival in New York in July 1899 on the SS Hekla (2) part of the Thingvalla line.   She arrived alone it appears.  The sad part is, the only census that she may have appeared on was destroyed in a fire.

A slight side questions, which I hope my Swedish friends here can answer for me.

I'm seeing a number of people appearing on my tree with duplicate names.  It's looking like parents had a child, named it, then after it died very young,  they've named a second child born later with the same name.

Is that something that would have been or still is, in practice today? or am I looking at simply errors in information recorded?

Anders,   Thank you so much for your help.

I wish I could explain to you just how much this is helping me.  For me, the Friberg side is the most interesting and it's making me happy when I find out a little more each time.

After some (considerable) time,  I'm rebuilding the tree.  Unfortunately, a lot of it was lost after my father passed away.

Re-reading some of the above,  I'm having doubts in my mind about how to confirm which of the two Carl Johann's mentioned above are the correct ones.  Short of DNA evidence,  how would it be best to try to determine who is my g-grandfather?   Is there anyone that can guide me on this

Sadly a trip to Sweden is not in my near future,  at least until I can find out if I have living relatives there.

Hi,  After the change in the forum, we've been unable to get back into my mother's account, so I will be using my own account here.   I just wanted to thank those that had helped with the searches, and we're now on track to finding out more information about the family.
