Correction to my earlier post: Jonas Edlund's father was in the Swedish Army, not Jonas.  I don't have the father's name.  Sorry for the mix-up.

Do you know anything about where he lived, or where and when he was born? Or the children's names and birth dates, or if the wife was alive 1890.

Befolkning 1890 has only one Jonas Edlund with a wife named Sofia Andersson/Andersdotter:

Johanss. Edlund, Jonas - jordarbetare (farm worker) b. 1835 in Gideå (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province) married man, father

Andersdotter, Anna Sofia - (wife) b. 1844 in Gideå (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province) married woman, mother

Anna Evelina - (daughtern) b. 1880 in Nordmaling (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province) girl, child

Alma Sofia - (daughtern) b. 1882 in Gideå (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province) girl, child

Fanny Kristina - (daughtern) b. 1885 in Gideå (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province) girl, child

Sörgidsjö, Gideå (Västernorrland conty, Ångermanland province)

But this Jonas Edlund was still alive in 1894 (Gideå HFL  AI:8 1890-1894 page 301, GID 2042.18.51800), and his father was torpare (poor tenant farmer) Johan Jönsson (Gideå births C:1 25 Apr 1835, GID 2042.18.51800)

Bo,
That sounds as if it may be him.  Jonas (born March 21,1842?) probably was alive yet in 1894.  His father was in the Army and died in 1892.  My Jonas was married to Sophia Anderson (probably Anderssdotter, born in 1841?), but their children were: Johan F. born Nov. 7, 1866, Kristina, Maria Sophia, Anders Gustav, Anna, and Augusta.  All but the latter two emmigrated to the US.  A 1911 article I have states that Jonas' mother was still alive and in her 97th year.  Aside from a couple of date discrepancies, your information matches up with my family pretty well.  Thank you!  I am hoping to find yet more information about them.

Correction: Jonas Edlund's birth in Gideå births C:1 25 Apr 1835 is at GID 2042.2.47900.

This might not be your Jonas, his father was torpare Johan Jönsson born 1788 (Gideå HFL AI:2 1824-1837 page 409 GID 2042.7.91800) and died 1865 or 1866 (Gideå HFL AI:5B 1855-1869 page 258 GID2042.11.74000).

And this Jonas married in 1873, so would probably not have a child born 1866 (Gideå HFL AI:7 1879-1889 page 288 GID 2042.17.9000).

I'm not sure if that's the same family or not.  My Jonas Edlund was probably still alive in 1894, his father had died in 1892.  It was the father that was in the Army.  I have Jonas' birthdate as March 21, 1842 and Sophia (Anderson/Andersdotter) Edlund's as 1841.  Their children were Johan (born Nov. 7, 1866), Christine (born abt. 1870), Maria Sophia (born abt. 1885?), Anders Gustav (born abt. 1873), Anna, and Augusta.  All but the latter two emmigrated to the US.  Much of the birth information is from Ellis Island records.  Johan emmigrated in 1888, then returned to Sweden for a few months, then brought back to the US with him his wife, Elisabeth, and Christine and (Anders)Gustaf in Oct. 1892.  A 1911 article I have about Johan mentions that Jonas' mother was still alive at that time and was in her 97th year, and that Johan raised three orphaned children of a sister (not Christine).

Perhaps someone can find them in Emibas?

I find no suitable Edlund candidates in the emigranten CD.

So perhaps they didn't use the Edlund name in Sweden, or they emigrated via another country, for example Norway.

I found an interesting group emigrating via Kristiania (Oslo) in 1892:

Date of departure: 06.10.1892
Given name: John
Last name: Edlund
Occupation: Arb.
Sex: m
Age: 26
Domicile: Dalsland
Destination: Peale Pa??
Line: Fr. Lie
Ship: Hekla

Travelling with: Gustav Edlund age 19, Kristine age 22, Elisabeth age 21.

digitalarkivet

But I don't see them in Befolkning 1890, so perhaps they took the name Edlund after 1890?

That group that went through Oslo is the family I'm looking for.  There is a reference to the family name GLADDER in some papers I have.  Could that have been their name prior to emmigration?

Found them!

I looked in Befolkning 1890 for a girl named Maria So* born 1880-1890, with a sibling named Kri*, and a mother named So* And* born 1841.

Here is the family at a place named Ed in Ör parish (Älvsborg) HFL AI:21 1886-1890 page 103 (GID 714.42.36300):

- worker Jonas Johannesson Glader, born 1842-03-21 Ör, married 1866-01-12, to N. Amerika 1889-09-13.
- wife Sofia Andersdotter, born 1841-08-13 Ör, married 1866-01-12.
- son Johan Fritiof Jonasson, born 1866-11-06 Ör, to N. Amerika 1888-04-26.
- daughter Kristina, born 1870-09-26 Ör.
- son Anders Gustaf, born 1873-06-11, to N. Amerika 1890-08-08.
- daughter Augusta, born 1876-09-23 Ör.
- daughter Anna Helena, born 1880-09-31 Ör.
- daughter Maria Sofia, born 1883-11-18 Ör.

In the next HFL AI:22 1891-1895 page 100 (GID 714.44.22400) they look like this:

- worker Jonas Johannesson, born 1842-03-21 Ör, married 1866-01-12, returned from Amerika 1892-04-14, calls himself Edlund, to N. Amerika 1893-09-23.
- wife Sofia Andersdotter, born 1841-08-13 Ör, married 1866-01-12.
- daughter Kristina Jonasdotter, born 1870-09-26 Ör, to N. Amerika 1892-09-09.
- son Anders Gustaf, born 1873-06-11, returned from Amerika 1892-04-14, to N. Amerika 1892-08-26.
- daughter Augusta, born 1876-09-23 Ör, to Holm 1894-11-18.
- daughter Anna Helena, born 1880-09-31 Ör.
- daughter Maria Sofia, born 1883-11-18 Ör.

- worker Johan Fritiof Jonasson, born 1866-11-06 Ör, married 1892-09-09, returned from Amerika 1892-04-14, calls himself Edlund, to N. Amerika 1892-09-09.
- wife Elisabet Andersdotter, born 1871-12-17 Ör, married 1892-09-09, to N. Amerika 1892-09-09.

So you should be able to follow the backwards in Household Examination rolls, birth records, etc.

Hi AJ,

I looked in the household records for Ör some books before Bo.

Högsbyn
Backsts. Johannes Larsson Glader, born March 9, 1812 in Ör. Gratialist (Some sort of military pension. Bo knows more.)
Wife:Stina Jonsdtr, born Jan, 17 1814 in Jerbo.
Jerbo is now spelled Järbo and is also in Dalsland, Älvsborg. Just across the mountain from Ör.

The next page in the book had this:
Högsbyn
Arb(Laborer) Jonas Johannesson Glader, born March 21, 1842 in Ör.
Wife Sofia Andersdtr, born Aug 13, 1841 in Ör
Son Johan Frithiof, born Nov 6 1866.
Daughter Kristina born Sept 26, 1870.
Son Anders Gustaf June 11, 1873
This is from Älvsborg, Ör, AI:17 1871-75 pag 313,314. GID 714.37.17900

In 1875 they move to Eds Udde in the same parish. (Could that look like Secula in some handwriting?)
In this book of records the family has a new member. Besides the above mentioned family there are two new daughters:
Augusta, born Sept 23, 1876
Anna Helena, born July 31, 1880.
This is from Älvsborg, Ör AI:18 GID714.38.55700.

Bo has one more daughter born later than Anna Helena.

Just a bit more for you to keep track of!
Karin

It's amazing to me how much information you are able to come up with!  I really appreciate your help.  I am checking with a couple of my relatives to find a little more information on the Levin side of our family.  I don't have much to go on yet -- not even a region of Sweden to start looking in.  Thanks again! __  AJ

Johannes Larsson Glader apparently had two wives.  Could you help me find marriage and death dates?

Svar #13

Bo Johansson

He seems to have been married twice.

Ör HFL AI:10 page 46 at Ed (GID 714.23.78400):
- soldier Johannes Larsson Glader, born 1812-03-02 Ör, came 1833 from page 184.
- wife Cajsa Jonsdotter, born 1805 Ör, came 1833 from page 66.
- two daughters born 1834 and 1836, and mother Catrina Andersdotter born 1787.

So they were probably married 1833.

More children are born, the mother dies 1839 (GID 714.24.103000), Cajsa Jonsdotter dies 1847, and a new wife Stina Jonsdotter born 1814-01-17 arrives 1849 from page 67 (GID 714.26.20800).

The children move out, Johannes retires, he and and Stina move 1866 to Högsbyn page 302 (GID 714.35.9200, 714.35.27900).

Johannes and Stina are still in Högsbyn in HFL AI:22 1891-1895 page 283 (GID 714.44.38300). This is the last HFL available at genline.

- worker Jonas Johannesson Glader, born 1842-03-21 Ör, married 1866-01-12, to N. Amerika 1889-09-13.
- wife Sofia Andersdotter, born 1841-08-13 Ör, married 1866-01-12.
I would like to find death or burial information for Sofia.  Her daughter, Kristina, and Kristina's husband, Gustaf, are buried in a cemetery near my home in Pennsylvania.  Next to them is an unmarked grave that is said to be the mother of one of them.  I know Gustaf's mother, Maja, came to America in 1900.  If Sofia never emigrated, we can be fairly certain the grave is Maja's.

I think GID 1893.29.35500 lists a person I'm looking for: Karin Larsdotter.  I'm having trouble reading the entry.  I can see that her mother's name is Brita and I believe that she was born out of wedlock?

Andrea, Karin mentioned on this page was born Dec. 17, was given emergency baptism and it seems she died the next day; father was Gullbrand Ersson, mother Brita Gullbrandsdotter. Please give some more information on your Karin Larsdotter and maybe I or someone else can help you out.

Barbro,
My Karin Larsdotter was born in 1778, married Olof Andersson (b. 1771), and had a son Anders, born 1802, in Erikstad -- GID 1893.5.53200.  I found Anders' birth record, GID 1893.29.39700, and have followed the family forward through Anders' marriage.  I am now trying to go backwards to find Karin and Olof's parents.  Thank you for your help!

Hello again Andrea, I found out a little more, not about Karin, but about Olof. Karin and Olof lived at Myckeläng Södra No. 2, and it seems Olof also had been born there. His mother Dorden Andersdotter, born 1727, died in 1807 living with her son?s family (GID 1893.6.64400). Olof birth record you will find at GID 1893.29.35300. He was born on Dec 14, 1777 (not 1771), his father was Anders Olsson.
Karin is more difficult since I have found no record so far of where she is born. I will have a new try tomorrow.

Barbro,
I've gone back through the records to the earliest one available on Genline for that family and have found Anders Olsson's birth year -- 1746.  His parents are probably there, too, but I can't be sure who they were.  Maybe the Olof listed directly below Anders and Dorden on GID 1893.1.19500?  I haven't been able to find any more on Karin yet, either.  Thanks again for your help.

Sorry Andrea, but I can?t help you interpretate this very difficult side. Below Anders (b. 1748) and Dorden (Dordij) is noted Eric b. 1771, which then should be an older brother of Olof. (I think I saw an Eric in one of the other church book pages mentioned above).
There is an Olof Persson b. 1713, but if he is the father of Anders, I could not say. It is not easy to read these old church books. If you find the birth record of Anders, maybe you can figure out who the parents were.

I have a question about GID 714.17.91800.  Dr. Lars (Jansson) was the father of Johannes Larsson Glader.  He apparently never married Cattrina Andersdotter, the mother.  I need help with the entries that indicate where he came from and where he moved to.

The Military Archives of Sweden should be able to help you. http://www.ra.se/KRA/index.html (available in English, German), there are contact addresses on the web page.

By the way, Håkan Syr?n is the highest ranking General in the Swedish forces and Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, but not necessarily a relative, the name is not uncommon.
