Susan Ekdahl

I live in Canada and am looking for my roots in Sweden. My great grandfather's name was Otto Ekdahl and was born 21 mars 1872 in either Smaaland, or Mellerud and died 19 october 1949. Otto had a brother (August?) and a sister. Maybe his mother's name was Kristina.
Otto moved to Norway, married Synnove Magnussen in 1901. He went to America with his son Walter, born 1905. Walter stayed in Canada while Otto went back to his wife and other children in Norway. His other children were called: Maria, Ebba, Gunnar, William, Dorri and Erna.

Mellerud is a small town in Holm parish. Holm is in Dalsland province, Älvsborg county. Småland is an other province. Such conflicting information about a person's origin may mean that he was born in one of these places and at some point lived in the other.

As you have a precise date, maybe someone with a Genline subscription could look in the Holm birth records to see if he was born there on that day. And, if he was still in Sweden in 1890 he should be in the 1890 Swedish census which is available on CD. There, the parish of birth is normally stated. Unfortunately I don't have Genline nor the CD, but I hope someone else can help you in looking him up there!

If neither of these suggestions help, there's another place you could try for clues. Norwegian church records might tell where he came from. There could be a moving certificate from when he moved to Norway, or possibly some information in the marriage record.

Just for fun I looked for Otto in the 1900 Norwegian census, which is searchable online. There I found just one Otto Ekdal. He lives in Sandefjord in Vestfold county, is a smith and seems to be registered as a lodger in a family. The census says he was born in 1873 in Småland, Sweden.

I have tried to find out who Otto was. He must have changed his name, there is no Otto Ekda(h)l born 1872 neither the Census of 1890, nor in the Emibas data base. Many emigrants to Norway were never recorded.. I am trying to access the Norwegian church records, but they are very slow. Anyway, he did not marry in Sandefjord. Do you have any more information that could be of use?

Can someone tell me the parishes or counties in Household Examination 379.22.12200 (1882-1891) on line 23 (Stina Persdotter) and line 27 (Eva Christina Fredriksdotter)?  I cannot interpret them or find anything close.  Thank you.

Lindsay:

line 23 (Stina Persdotter) born in Grangärde parish, Kopparberg county.

line 27 (Eva Christina Fredriksdotter) born perhaps in Salboborn, a place in Ljusnarsberg parish.

Do you know if Salboborn was renamed because I can't find it after the 1851 Household Examination?
