Hello,
I am researching my husband's family....... the last name of Hylander.  His grandfather was Edward Louis Hylander, born in Chesterton, Indiana in 1877.  I am stuck there, we haven't been able to find his parents names and are fairly certain they came to America from Sweden.  If anyone has any information about the Hylander family in Sweden I would love to hear from you.  Thank you.....

There are a Fredrik Edvard Hylander born 1853-10-09 in Malmö, emigrating to Norway 1873-10-22 from Gothenburg. He could be someone to check.

Check with the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center and try to find information such as the baptism of Edward Louis Hylander. That will name his parents.
 
If they joined one of the Swedish American churches, then the family will be listed in detail on the members' list. Otherwise, you still should be able to find information about the baptisms, confirmations, deaths, moves in and out, etc.
 
The Swenson Center has a website but its extensive collection of records is NOT online. You will need to go there to research or pay them to research for you. They have records which are difficult or even impossible to find elsewhere. Many of us have found the parish in Sweden and much more using their records. (Google Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center.)

The mother is a widow in 1900, living in Chicago with her 5 children. She is called Mathilda and immigrated in 1869, born April 1852. Various years are given for Edward in different sources, 1877, 1887, and 1880. They may be different persons but all born in Indiana - could that be the same original family?

Lynda, since you said in another post that you are researching the Ekstrand family, I believe this is your Edward Hylander in 1900 with his wife Olga.  Plus an Illinois birth record to show that Olga's maiden name was Ekstrand.

Here is the death record for Matilda Hylander's daughter Lillie.  The father's name was August Hylander, perhaps he was a brother of Edward Louis Hylander's father, since both families lived in Indiana and had sons named Edward?

Yes, Edward is Olgaʻs husband...... they are my husbandʻs grandparents.  I have seen the info on August Hylander, but it just didnʻt seem to fit.  Will review all that you sent and I thank you...... unfortunately, the last of the Hylander siblings, Edward & Olgaʻs children, is currently under hospice care...... that would be LaVerne, listed above.  Sadly she is failing rapidly...... so, we shall have to keep on following leads and hopefully one will point us in the right direction......

Good morning everyone....... through a cousin I have learned more information which I hope will help me find out more about my husband's grandfather, Edward, his parents and perhaps ancestors.  Edward's father was John Ferninand (Ferdinand?) Hylander, b. 14 Feb 1833, immigrated to Indiana, USA 1860, married Anna Flood 1865 and died 19 Sept 1901.  John Ferninand's father was Jonas Magnus Olofsson Hylander, b. 2 Nov 1805 in Bringetofta, Jonkopings lan, Smaland, married Anna Carolina Sophia Malmberg bef. 1827 and immigrated to Indiana from his birth land 18 Sept 1868.  (the above mentioned Ausust is John's brother and Mathilda is August's wife).  John's wife, Anna Flood, b. 14 Jan 1840 in Sweden, immigrated to Indiana in 1864, married John 1865 and died September 1923.  I don't have Anna's parents names.  Both John and Anna are buried in a Chicago, Illinois cemetery.  They had 5 children....... William b. 1867, Charles b. 1874, Edward Louis b. 1877 (my husband's grandfather), Emma b. 1878 and Ernest Victor b. 1882.  All the children were born in America.  
 
The John & Anna Hilander listed above seem to fit except the names of the children are not exactly the same.
 
So, the search continues....... many of you have been most helpful and I am very grateful........ I would be very happy if any more information could be found about those listed above.  Thank you, tack sa mycket, mahalo nui loa.......
