My Great Great Grandfather, Charles August Huggerth was born in Risinge, Ostergotland, Sweden on October 11, 1850 and emmigrated to America in 1870 or 1871.  His parents were Lars Gustaf  and Maria Elizabet Huggerth, they also emmigrated to America sometime after their son.  I am trying to find out what the name Huggerth means and if this is the proper spelling for the name or if it was changed when they came to America, any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thank You!

If someone could do a lookup in the churchbook you will find theire names! I've searched through Familysearch to see if I could find a Carl August Larsson, but I didn't.

Huggerth ....... not a name that I've heard of. Maybe his fathers name was Hagbartsson ... who knows?

A huggert was a weapon - huggvapen (not
a sword but something like that), according to
a dictionnary. Huggert could very well be a
soldier's name. In that case most of those
Huggerts above were not related.

A huggert, as a weapon, is something similar to a cutlass.
As a name, it's quite unusual. According to official statistics, only 15 persons are wearing the name in Sweden today.

Rebecca and Nina!

Maria Elizabet and Maja Lisa could be the same name, so if this is the same Lars Gustaf Huggert, he may have been married only once.

Hi Eva!
I can't find Huggert's anywhere else in Sweden (Familysearch). Huggert also appears in Germany, Denmark and England. Maybe it could be a familyname and not a soldiers name?

Bo,
Thank You! This is my Great Great Grandfather, his sister, Father, Mother and brothers! I knew that they all followed him to America, but I never had actual dates.

Nina,
Thank You!  Huggert is probably the original name and was changed to Huggerth after they came to the U.S.  I will have to check out all of these names, they could also be ancestors.

Bo and Nina,
I am not sure if Maja Lisa and Maria Elizabet are the same person.  I do not know the marriage date of Lars and Maria, but I do know that Anna Caroline, (Charles August's sister, was born in July of 1847, so if Lars, who married Maja Lisa is my G.G.G. Grandfather, then Maja Lisa, must be Maria Elizabet and she must have been expecting when they married.  Very interesting!

Hi Rebecca!

When Lars Gustaf Huggert and Maja Lisa Svensdotter married in 1847 May 29 in Risinge it is written in the marriage record that Lars Gustafs father was the Innkeeper Per Huggert and his mother Anna Carolina Råström.
Maja Lisas father's name is not mentioned, only that he is dead, and her mother was the widow Anna Nilsdotter. The record also say that Maja Lisa was born in Hellestad parish.

Lars Gustaf Huggert was born in Risinge 1825 February 2, and in the birthrecord the father is mentioned as former sergeant Per Huggert.

Lotta and Nina
Thank you so much for all of this information.  I never dreamed that I would be able to find out so much information about Lars ancestors unless I made a trip to Sweden.  I am still not sure what the name Huggert means, or if there was ever a family crest, but this may lead me to it.
Thanks again!

My ancestors who came to America originated from Ostergotland or Gotland.  Perhaps there is a connection.  I would love to check in to this further.
