My 3-great grandfather, Eric Ericson (sp?) 7/5/1790 - 1847 was renamed in the military to Eric Lejonhud. I know Lejon is Lion and hud is Hide/Skin so his name means Lionhide or Lionskin, but I can find no references to this name. Some OLD Swedish relatives remember being told that he was knighted by the then Swedish king. (I don't have any proof either way). Only thing I found researching thru Genline is that he died a retired soldier. I can not find any info on his birth, if Ericsson is really his birth name (it was listed on his death papers), who his parents were.. As far as we know, all Lejonhuds related to us came over to the U.S.A.(unless someone misbehaved before they moved over to America),so there is no one in Sweden that I can call and ask. I appreciate any and all information and help that comes my way. Thank you}

Hi Tamara,

Which date was Eric born, on May 7th or July 5th? At FamilySearch.org I found a boy Erik born May 7th 1790 in Stavnas, Varmland. His parents were Erik Hansson and Maria Ersdotter. I also found one boy Erik christened July 5th in Orebro, Narke, with parents Erik Ersson and Brita Olsdotter. It could be one of them, but I haven´t done any further research about their deaths. Since you too have a Genline-subscription I suppose you can look yourself. Please write again if you want some help reading the old documents.

When and where did he die?

Where is the earlist you have seen him in some other record?

I doubt the knighting story, there is or was no Leijonhud noble family, so it is probably an ordinary soldier name.

According to the DISBYT database, the Eric Lejonhud which Anders pointed out had grandsons who emigrated to the U.S.: Erik August Lejonhud born 1866 and Anders Gustaf Lejonhud born 1870. Does this match your information? There may have been multiple, unrelated, Lejonhud families - when a soldier retired, the same military name was assigned to a new recruit.

There are five Lejonhud in the Swedish phone directory today, but I don't know whether they're related to yours.

This page has some info on Swedish naming practices, including examples of military names, but I suspect you're already familiar with this information!

First off - thank you to all of you, answering and helping so quickly.  My Grandfather had a lot of information up until his great grandfather Eric Lejonhud.  The Erik August Lejonhud born 1866 was my great grandfather and Anders Gustaf was his brother, they also had a sister Augusta. The Jan Eric born in 1817 which is mentioned in Jan Perrsons post was their grandfather.  I am trying to find his father Eric (Ericsson) Lejonhud. According to information on how to read the dates, he was born July 5, 1790. (the 5 was above the line and 7 was below the line).  I read that date from his obituary notice.  I didn't see the date of his death, just the year, 1847.  I have also found his birth date listed in household accounts, listing him, his wife and children.  I know there is an Eric Ericsson born on 7/25/1790, but I don't believe it is the correct person because of all the household accounts listing him as an adult born 7/5/1790.  I just can't find anything listing him as a child or who his parents were.  I am stuck in the branches of my family tree until I can find the correct Eric Ericsson Lejonhud and continue on. On a extended branch Jan Eric (1817) had several sisters and two brothers, Anders Gustaf Lejonhud (b 5/19/1828) and Carl Ludwig Lejonhud             (b 10/2/1831).  I know Carl L. had a son whom he named Carl Ludwig Lejonhud (b 5/20/1859) I have not yet gone any further than that to know if any of the living Lejonhuds in Sweden are relatives.
Thank you again.

In the deathrecords of 1847 you find Erik Lejonhud and o note on his father the worker Erik Ersson (=Eriksson) i Farbo(?).

(Norrbärke F:5)

He dies in Strabo 21/5 and is noted 56 years, 10 months and 16 days old.

According to hfl AI:6c page 31 below Furbo you can see:

Erik Ersson is dead 1798. The rest of the family
move to Torebo(?) and outside this picture, you can see they move around 1800-1801. In Andreas note above, it´s mentioned; Erik Lejonhud came from Torebo(?). (Andreas - please write down the volume-number, and page!)

Tamara,
As you can se above we use different pages; I use ADOnline and Andreas uses Genline or Svar. The volume numbers in ADOnline are the numbers of today, if you want to contact archives in Sweden.)

I found Brita Cajsa Sundmark in Skisshyttan HFL AI:7a (1805-1817) page 4, she later moved to Gubbo page 133 same volume. Erik Lejonhud was borned in Furbo and when his father died they moved to Torrbo (Torrbebo)  HFL AI:7d page 30. Together they moved to Övre Starbo HFL AI:8c page 70.

Thank´s Andreas! Now it is possible to follow them.
I searched for Erik Ersson and Elisabeth Olsdotter before AI:6c page 31. Found them in AI:5b page 132:

Erik Ersson is mentioned i Furbo already 1780 and Lisa Ohlsdotter in 1782 31/1.
When Erik Eriksson is born 25/7 1790 in Furbo the age of the mother is mentioned 40(!?) (Norrbärke C:5)
Kindly,
Olle

Maybe the knighting was a mixup because of the similarity between the names Lejonhud and Lejonhuvud (Lewenhaupt).
