My great grandfather Johan Lindblad met and married another Swedish emigrant, Mary Brunsell, in Chicago in the 1880s.  Her death certificate (1916) shows her coming from Charlottenberg and parents named Olof and Christina.

I think I found the family at 476.54.51500, 476.50.21800,476.47.23800 and 476.56.29600.  I think I read that Maja is equivalent to Maria.

476.56.29600 is interesting because it shows Maria leaving for Amerika in 1877.  This corresponds to our family lore which says that she went to Pittsburgh in 1877 and later moved to Chicago.  I can not find a record of her arrival in USA and would love to find a departure record (ship from Göteborg?) for her.  The rest of the family goes to USA in later years (sister Charlotta in 1880 and most of the rest on October 28, 1887 per 476.49.42900), but I think it unusual that a 15 year old girl would go to USA alone.  Perhaps I can find some other relatives that she traveled with.

I think I found the marriage record (June 12, 1859) of Olof Brunzell and Stina Maria Sjoberg at 476.40.20100.  Please help me read the words to the left of Olof's name - is this an occupational reference?  Please also help read the village for Stina Maria (presumably in Köla?).

Also, does it say Olof's origin is Vitsand (born September 24,1831)?

Also, tracing Maria's birthday, I think I found the birth record (March 27, 1862) at 100017.16.12400.  I see Stina Maria Sjoberg of Charlottenberg (age 24, which is correct, but the fathers name appears to be Soldater Olof (Karlfelt?, Hartsell?).  Perhaps I have the wrong record, or there is a different father, or Olof carries a different name like a military designation?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello again

Olof is a stångjernssmed, ie a smith working in the iron works with the big bars of iron.

Maria probably left via Oslo or possibly another port in Norway, she is not in the registers for Gothenburg (not complete). Charlottenberg is very close to Norway, which of course was Swedish in those days. Her mother and two brothers, one of them with family leave in 1886 and they travel via Oslo. But I could not fins Maria there, records are not complete. You can see emigrants in the Norwegian archives at www.digitalarkivet.no . English is selected at the bottom of the page, press data base selector and choose emigrants. Brunzell can be spelled Brunsell as well.

Maria´s birth record: her father is above the mother and it says stångjernssmeden Olof Brunzell.

From EMIBAS Värmland  at CD Emigranten Populär however birth date somewhat incorrect. The date for emigration only telling us when she got her moving out permit from the parish, so as Chris suggested, try with Digitalarkivet.

Well done Bo! She must have moved long before they registered it. A number of people left Eda at approximately the same time, so she may have travelled with them over the Atlantic. How come she ended up in Pittsburgh?

Bo & Chris - thank you very much!

I need some more training or language skills before I can use digitalarkivet.no, but you've given me the critical piece and a lot that I can move forward on.

The record seems to indicate that she was traveling alone, but maybe this means without immediate family and she could have been with a group from Eda.  Is there an image of a passenger list that I could look at?

At some point, Maria is believed to have gone to Chicago to live with her Uncle John.  There appears to be a Johan Brunzell (born July 20, 1849) at 476.47.23800 (moved in 1872, moved out 1875?), but perhaps this is a cousin rather than an uncle.  I need to go back into the genline records to find Olof's siblings and extended family.

I am not finding an arrival record nor a listing in the 1880 USA census, but that does not mean that it is not there somewhere.  I will keep looking.

Pittsburgh could be a faulty memory of my grandmother's Uncle Karl, or perhaps because of Olof's occupation they went to Steel Town USA?

She went in company of Anders Bergman, smith, also residing Charlottenberg.
Residence is Charlottenberg even for Marie. He was aboout 22. So perhaps a friend. I will e-mail the list to you, there are, however no ship manifests online. I also try to attach the screenshot below.

I picked out emigrants via Oslo in 1877 who were listed as residents of E da socken (socken=parish) and they are also listed as foreigners from Sweden. I may think the names sounds Norwegian, however.

Bo - Thank you for all of the information!

I read somwhere that ships from Göteborg typically went to the east coast of England and people went overland to board a larger ship in Liverpool before leaving for the east coast of USA.  Is the same generally true for ships leaving Oslo?

(I haven't had time yet to fully analyze all of the records that you sent - I apologize if the answer is in there.)

I am searching to make the connection with the Johannes Brunzell born 1849-01-20 (or 1849-07-20).  I have a feeling this is the right man because he marries Sofia Maria Ellstrom and I have a family letter from the 1950s that recalls seeing John Brunsell and Miss Edstrom in Chicago.

Maria's uncle Johannes would be Olof's brother, born in 1837, found on page 160 of Vagsjöfors bruk HFL for 1836-1841 at 540.6.62800.  Maria's grandfather Johannes appears to have died on September 13, 1840 (540.13.16100).

Olof appears to have moved to Eda (Charlottenberg) in 1843 at the age of 12 or 13 per 540.8.89000.

Thanks Sven-Ove.  This makes sense and I need to figure out who my grandmother referred to as Petter Steena.  She referred to Olof's sister Eva as Foster Eva, so maybe she's using the names that her mooma Maria used.

Getting back to Maria Brunzell's mother, I think I found Stina Maria Sjoberg's birth record (January 10, 1838) at 502.37.31300.  Her parents appear to be Erik Sjoberg and Anna Eriksdotter.  At this time, they were living at Adolfsfors (502.49.43300).

Please help me with Erik's occupation (spik..? - something to do with nails?).

Also, please help me with Anna's last name - I only see Ersdotter, but am assuming this is Eriksdotter.  If so, perhaps her birth record in Nyed is found at 516.44.85600 (May 13, 1811) in Rudberg, daughter of Stina Jonsdotter and Erik ??????

Hello Charlie
I think that I can help you with Erik’s occupation. I read it as “spiksmed”. A “smed” Is a smith (blacksmith?)  so you are right… he must have been a nail smith. Have not had time to look into your other questions.

Thanks Mats!  I do appreciate it.

I have found Anna (Eriksdotter?) in the HFL for 1811-1815 in Rudsberg (516.57.101400).  It appears that her mother Stina (born 1784) was living with her parents Jonas Olson (born 1749) and Lena (Olsdotter?) (born 1756) during this time period.

If you have a chance, please let me know whether you can tell if the birth record for Anna (516.44.85600) indicates where her father Erik was living and what is his last name.  Many thanks.

Hello Charlie

This is my interpretation: Anna's parents were not married when she was born. Her father is Erik Nilsson from Backa. If this is right then he can be found on following pages: Nyed AI:6, page 424, GID 516.56.73100 and Nyed AI:7 page 86, GID 516.57.78300. Hope that this is right. Good luck with your research!

Here's one that I am not having any luck with and would really appreciate any help.

Eva Lisa Brunzell married her brother-in-law Olof Börjesson (540.12.14100) in October 1858 (see 540.2.52700, 540.17.21800) following the death of her sister Anna Maria (540.13.17800) in April 1857.

On the other side of my family, Cajsa Greta Börjesson is the son of Jon Börjesson.  I believe that Jon and Olof are related, possibly brothers.  However, I can not find Jon's birth record (supposedly 21 or 31 January 1828 in Lysvik), nor his family in the HFL for Lysvik 1825-1829.

Olof appears to have been born in Vitsand in 1819, but genline has birth records online only back to 1824.

Can you please see whether you see a record to link Jon and Olof Börjesson, or point me in a direction where I might look for additional information?

Thanks Kristina!  I see that Karin Bondesdotter came from a family in Västanå before her marriage to Börje.  Her father Bonde Larson (born 1766) (481.58.33800 and 481.55.57300) is noted by the priest as fattig och ...icklig - poor and something?

Tracing farther back, it looks like Karin's mother was Marit Eriksdotter? (born 1764), but I can't really read what happened to her between 1804 and 1812 (481.52.98700) - perhaps she died?

It looks like the family lived in Västanå in 1797 (481.51.73100 right hand page), but I don't find a birth record for Karin with Bonde and Marit as parents.

Börje Olsson moved to Västanå in 1824 (481.55.57000) perhaps with his younger sister Britta Olsdotter, but it doesn't indicate from where.  The genline moving in/out records start in 1825 for the parish, so I need to work on his origin too.

Bonde Larsson was fattig och sjuklig, poor and sickly. And yes, Marit Eriksdotter dies. Hard to read the remarks, but the first word is sjuklig, sickly and the last is död, dead.
Bonde seems to remarry and gets a son, Lars Bondesson, in 1812.

These and my prior post are describing the intersection of McCandless and Duncan streets in the neighborhood of Pittsburgh known as Lawrenceville.  There is another road 2 blocks form Duncan called Holmes, and we can find a John Brunsell listed on Duncan and a John Bruncell on Holmes in 1901.

Andrew Carnegie's original steel mill was in Lawrenceville, so if your Brunsell ancestors had anything to do with iron works in Sweden, it's possible they came to Pittsburgh to work in steel mills.

Attached are 1897 and 1901 directory pages for Pittsburgh.
