Carl Friberg

I am at a dead end regarding my great grandfather August Friberg (parents in kalmar named Jonsson)I know August moved to stockholm in 1897 and his swedish paperwork stops at that point. He came to NYC, america in 1911, he went back to sweden to retrieve his wife? and children and brought them back in 1914 to NYC. The ship manifest says they had lived in KÄllung? Gotland! His wife? is named
Hilma Charlotta Augusta Friberg, The children are named Henning Lenord, Gasta Valerius, and Gunhild Frideborg. Is anyone able to check this out for me? Thankyou, Carl Friberg

Hi again, Carl,

It seems that your Friberg family (including August, who went back for his family), used a Norwegian port to travel in 1914, since the passenger list at the Ellis Island site says they left from Christiana = Kristiana.(It also seems that they had been living in Kalmar, possibly with August's brother Aron Friberg, so maybe they also used a Danish ship to travel to Norway. At any rate, they aren't on the Emigrant CD.)

I think Gasta is Gösta.

The Danish Emigration archive which is online doesn't yet cover 1914. Maybe it will eventually.

Perhaps someone can answer this private post sent to me today.

Hello Judy, I have only just now come across your response on the anbytarforum back in dec 2003. I want to thank you for that information. I have since found much more information, but would appreciate if you could find out about August's military record and who and how the family name was changed from jonsson to friberg.
Here is the response you gave me back in 2003

I don't know what additional information you have found but usually it needs to be shared in order for someone to find more. ;-)

I think I've found August in 1890 and 1900. Does this family match your new information?

He is listed twice on the 1900 Swedish Census CD, I think. This entry shows that he had not properly registered out from Maria Magdalena parish in Stockholms stad (city). Here he was listed as a former (f.d. = before this) Reseombud.

The Söder CD (for part of the city of Stockholm) lists his birthdate as 19 January 1874. Hopefully a Swede can explain this about his military information.

The father of August didn't use the name Friberg, or at least, not in 1900. (He was a shoemaker, by the way: skomakare).

I suggest that you read about Swedish naming customs. There are several interesting and informative articles on the SweGGate site. Follow the Facts --> Names and Naming Practices pathway.

Hans Högman's site has a good section on military.

Hi,
Carl was my distant cousin and I am trying to continue with his work about my great grandfather Nils Jonsson Fridolf of deliverer, Kalmar. Gustav Theodor was my grandfather. Are there census before 1890 that might give a hint as to when he moved to Redeem? Could you advise the best way to Obtain birth records that might list his parents? Also I have a lead that his wife might be Igrid Kajsa Jonsdotter born in Rydaholm, Jönköping. What is the best way to find out if that is true? thanks you for your help,
  Laura

Laura! Do you have more informations about Ingrid Maria, e.g. when she was born? I have a catalogue over nearly all emigrants from Rydaholm parish. Perharps I can find her.

Rune

Sorry! I wrote wrong surname, it is Ingrid Cajsa.

Hi Laura!

There is only one girl named Ingrid Cajsa born i Madesjö, province of Kalmar in 1839.

CI:5 Madesjö *1839-08-02 (bapt 4/8) Ingrid Cajsa
Daughter of the farmer Jonas Andersson and his wife Maria Andersdotter at Marcustorp.

Here is a picture from the parishrecord AI:12 Madesjö p 186, Markustorp:

The father Jonas Andersson is said to be born 1811-06-01 at Markustorp, Madesjö and the mother Maria Anderdotter 1801-11-17 Förlösa. In 1848 the family moves to Kristvalla parish, province of Kalmar (old spelling, Christvalla). The children are born in Madesjö. The earlier parishrecord AI:10 p 164 says that Maria Andersdotter moved to Madesjö from Kristvalla in 1834.

Regards

Britt-Marie

C:8 Förlösa *1885-04-20 Gustaf Theodor
Nils Fridolf Jonsson, shoemaker, Ingrid Cajsa Jonsson at Wedby 2.

A picture from AI:10 Förlösa p 459 (250) Wedby 2:

The birthdate for Stina Cajsa is the same that I´ve found in the birthbook for Madesjö. The oldest sons have taken the name Friberg as you can see.

Per Gottfrid Friberg born 1871-11-22 Förlösa moves to North America 1896-08-17 and his sister Amanda Sofia born 1876-02-02 Förlösa to North America 1895-04-29 (according to the parishrecord AI:11 Förlösa p 303 1889-1899). Gustaf Theodor is still in Förlösa in 1899. This is the last parishrecord that´s available for me online.

C:4 Åby (province of Kalmar) p 517
*1838-12-29 (bapt 6/1) Nils Fridolf
Soldier Jonas Nilsson Smidt and his wife Johanna Andersdotter at Karlsbo.

AI:8 Åby p 79 Karlsbo properties

Jonas Nilsson Smidt born in 1814-03-31 Bäckebo,  Kalmar län (province). Johanna Andersdotter born 1814-01-25 Fliseryd, Kalmar län.

I followed Nils Fridolf as he worked on different farms in Åby untill he marries Ingrid Cajsa Jonsdotter 1863-11-13 Förlösa. He is now said to be the villageshoemaker. Ingrid Cajsa moves to Åby after the marriage 1863 and they live at Nickebo, Åby (AI:13 p 116). At this time Nils Fridolf still has the right birthdate December 29th, later on someone has misread and written 21th.

Thank you all so much for so much information and so quickly done.  All the information you have found seems truly to be for my great grandparents and now for my great-great grandparents.  The only children of Nils Fridof who remained in Sweden were Johan Alfred, Aron and Ida Carolina. All the rest came to America and stayed in New York.

How far back is it easy to trace the ancestors if you know their date and place of birth?
Laura
