Hello!

I need some help with the following death record.  The first sentence is easy, but after that I'm lost.

GID 410.29.50700, [Ostergötland] Vist, F:1, Death Records, 1804-1863, page 194, Image 173.
Eva Lotta Carlsdotter, died 13 November 1857.

I'm tremendously grateful for everyone's help.
Thanks,
Kathryn

Kathryn, in swedish it is:
Källsäters Fattigstuga. Född 1827 21/9
i Wist och Barkesved. Intogs på
Vadstena Central Hospital år 1852 28/11
afled derstädes och blef äfven der br-
grafven.
Som dödsorsak anges Nymphomanie.

In english it will be something like this:
Källsäters poorhouse. Born 1827 21/9
in Wist and Barkesved. Was taken in at
Vadstena Central Hospital in year 1852 28/11
died there and was buried at the same place.
As the reason of death there is written Nymphomanie.

Per,

Thank you for your help!
I presume you, as I, are taken aback by the reason of death.  Can you posit any explanation or alternative translation? Could this be convulsions or epilepsy?
What I know about Eva Lotta is that she had always lived with a family member, had no catechism learning, was commented to have had a stroke, and to be feeble-minded. She had a twin sister who died at birth.
Though the cause of death leaves me with many questions, I am grateful to have the report translation and thank you for your kind help.

Kathryn, I really dont know. This is what I found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphomania. And it is the same explanation in swedish. It's hard for me to beleve that it could caused her death.

It seems Nymphomania could also mean ovarian cancer, or illness with similar symptoms, at least in horses.

Bo,

Thanks!  I was hoping someone would come up with an alternate translation, as the obvious one
makes quite the odd story [hospitalized for five years and dying from nymphomania!].

As always, I'm eternally grateful for all the help,

Kathryn

Hi

Note that the Swedish word hospital means mental hospital, lunatic asylum. Maybe nymphomania was not the cause of death, but the reason why she was (locked up?) at the hospital.

I'll try to give a translation with a lite more background.

Swedish

Källsäters Fattigstuga. Född 1827 21/9
i Wist och Barkesved. Intogs på
Vadstena Central-Hospital år 1852 28/11.
Afled derstädes och blef äfven der be-
grafven.

Dödsorsak: Nymphomanie

English

Poorhouse* of Källsäter [likely Källsätter in Vist Parish]. Born on September 21, 1827 in Vist [Parish] and Barkesved** [a croft in Vist Parish]. Admitted to Vadstena Central-Hospital [a mental asylym: http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadstena_hospital] on November 28, 1852. Died there and was also buried there.

Cause of death: Nymphomanie

* In rural areas (and the vast majority of Swedes lived in the countryside in the mid 19th century) poorhouses were small. In this case is even called a fattigstuga (poorcottage) rather than a fattighus (poorhouse), so it's likely a small cottage (like this: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fattigstuga_Sm%C3%A5land_NM_1969_%282%29. JPG?uselang=sv) with a small number of poor/old/insane persons living together.

** According to  Vist C:4 1761-1863 (picture 152/page 291) Eva Lotta Karlsdotter was born in Åkroken, Vist Parish. She had by the way a twin sister called Maja Greta. In Vist AI:5 1820-1830 (picture 135/page 129) the family however live at Barkesved (with Åkroken deleted), Vist Parish. It seems like they and another family have changed crofts. I think many of these old photos give a sense of how they might have lived: http://www.hjle.se/webbsidor/bk_bostaden.htm.

In Vadstena hospitalförsamling AI:1 1846-1861 (picture 93/page 25) the death of Eva Lotta Karlsdotter is also mentioned:

November Månad
Eva Lotta Carlsdtr. | 14 | 20 | Fattighjon från Wist Link. L. | 30 | ogift

English:

Month of November
Eva Lotta Carlsdtr. | [died on November] 14 | [was buried on November] 20 | Pauper from Wist [Parish in] Link. L. [Linköping County = Östergötland County] | 30 [years old] | unmarried

Kristina and Anders,

Wow, thank you so much for all the additional information, and the photo links!
I was out of town for a few days, which is why you did not hear from me sooner -
so please do not think me ungrateful.  On the contrary, I am overwhelmed by the
gifts of time, interest, and expertise that you all have so generously shared.

Tack så mycket!

I just found Eva Lotta Carlsdotter in her last listing in an Husförhör before going to the hospital.  Can someone translate for me what is written in the comments column?  I am hoping it may provide additional information to explain why she was sent to the hospital.  Here is the location:  GID 410.18.36200  AI: 10B  page 232 Image 244, Vist 1851-59

Thanks again to everyone for your help,
Kathryn

Top: Died at Wadstena Hospital 1857-11-03(?).

Middle: difficult to read, something about a request(?) (for admission??) to Wadstena Hospital, and something about the insane asylum (Dårhuset) 1852-09-04(?).

Bottom: Svaghet (weakness)

How does svaghet (weakness) relate to wanting an admission to the asylum?
Who would have requested her admission to an asylum?
Is Dårhuset the same thing as Vadstena? Had she previously been in Dårhuset?

thanks again,
Kathryn

It probably is bluntness, indolence-- , we also have a word

sinnesslöhet= mentally deficient

the translations refer to British English, though.

So svaghet =lethargy is not exactly the best interpretation, I think

dårhus = mental hospital,  but dårhus is a house where you locked madmen/madwomen  in, long time ago, but dårhus is not the official designation, rather slang.
Vadstena Hospital was a mental hospital, no doubt. Vadstena is /was a town.

The vicar can be the one who had requested the admission to an asylum. Physicians were rather rare in the countryside. Public opinion and some interludes may have brought the vicar's attention. Even the local police can take action.

Bo -
Thank you so much for the new translation - that helps alot. Are there open records (other than the Husförhör) that would provide the specifics of who made the request and why?

Again, tack så mycket!

The records for the Vadstena mental hospital are kept at the Regional Archive (Landsarkiv) in Vadstena, but are not online.
You can e-mail them and ask what kind of records they have for the time frame your relative was placed there.
Their e-mail is landsarkivet.vala@riksarkivet.se

To: Per Eriksson, Bo Johansson, Kristina Gunnarsdotter, Anders Karlsson, Bo Nordenfors, and Elisabeth Thorsell -

After providing so much help in regards to this translation,I thought you may be interested in the information received from Vadstena Hospital. I quote here the email sent to me, and attach photo copies of the original record. Of course, if you can decipher any additional information from the original records, I would appreciate that also.
For all the assistance you have already provided, I am eternally grateful.     /Kathryn
Email:
I enclose a copy concerning Eva Lotta Carlsdotter from Vadstena hospital.
Not too easy to read, but it says that she had a stroke at the age of 3,
and since then, a bit indolent and stupid. The death-cause was typhoid fever.
