Paul de la Grange, dead before 1659 27/2 (then buried in Odensvi) (1). Paul de la Grange called himself de la Grantij (and Påvel Johansson) in the court records of Sevede district (härad) (2). Summoned to Sweden in 1611 as a French language teacher to Karl IX's daughters Katarina and Maria Elisabeth, was a page to Gustav II Adolf, later served in the cavalry and became a crown ranger 2nd degree in 1623 in Östergötland and in 1624 in Småland. Påvel Johansson was, according to a Royal letter, already in 1620 27/1 awarded the revenues, but sold the farm Högsäter, 1 mtl taxed in Vreta abbey (kloster) (nowadays Stjärnorp) in Gullbergs district (härad) before 1629 to Stellan Mörner. He afterwards had commissions as crown ranger in these provinces.
Pls note that the Swedish word used for farm, gården, can mean anything from something a little larger than a croft to nearly a castle.
Mtl = mantal - very confusing term that means a farm big enough to support a family (with no indication as to how big a family)
Farms came in basically three variations:
skatte (taxed), meaning the farmer owned the farm outright and paid taxes directly to the crown
frälse (nobility), meaning the farmer leased his land from a member of the nobility and paid rent to the nobleman but no taxes (for the land)
krono (crown) meaning the farmer leased his land from the Crown and paid rent but no taxes (for the land)})
The crown ranger looked after the crown's forests and game; it was a most respectable position.
