Would you help me with this one?  The mother and two children left for America, but where did the father on line one go? And the notes? I was always told that my great great grandfather, Per Andersson, died before they decided to go to America.

Thanks, Laura

The note on line two says Certificate with the husband's consent.

Laura,

Have you checked if the four people could be found on the Swedish Emigranten CD? That could clarify who left, and with whom. If Stein is correct about line one it can be interpreted as number four leaving first in 1891, then the father and the son(?) in April 1892, followed by the mother in the beginning of May.

The note on the son (3) in the left column says Kass. meaning he was unfit for military compulsory service, värnplikt. But maybe you got that one already.

Emigrations in 1892 should also in principle be possible to find in the Ellis Island web index.

For the husband I think it says Undan (I don't think it's a 3 before that but I can't think what it should be). Undan would be short for undantag which fits nicely: the husband was to old/infirm to go with the rest of the family, the farm/croft was sold and the husband was put on undantag and was thus provided for when the others left.

Undantag was a form of pension. A farm/croft was sold for less than its value and in the contract it was stipulated that a person (or an old couple etc) would be allowed to live in a part of the building or if there were several buildings, in a separate building, and be provided with grain, potatoes and other food and wood for making fires, sometimes even a servant; all specified.
Undantag was also used when a child took over the running of a farm/croft before the parents were dead.

Does the father show up anywhere else? If I'm right about the undantag he ought to be noted further down the page or on the next page or two, with the remark undan or undantag.
What about death record?

I appreciate the suggestions and the help.  The family is the husförhör 1890-1894 thus:

Hökare Per Andersson b: 27 April 1833 in Bjuv
H. Bothilda Persdotter b: 6 Feb 1836 in Bjuv
son Alfons Axel Andrea 2 Oct 65 in Bjuv
dotter Hilda Sophia 13 Jan 1872 in Helsingborg

Bothilda and her son Alfons came to America together.  I did find Alfons in what was referred to as the Register of People  leaving Malmöhus län in 1892, as well as his brother Axel Bonde Anderson (b: 27 Feb 1869) who left Sweden in 1888.  I haven't found an emigration record for the sister Hilda.  I know she came since she is in a picture taken in Illinois, but she either returned to Sweden or died.  Bothilda and Alfons are both listed on the manifest of the ship Norge arriving 29th of May 1892 in New York.

Imagine my surprise! Per was alive enough to give his consent for his wife to leave. That's a good lead.  What years are covered by the Death CD? Could someone look up Per Andersson?

Regards (and smiles)
Laura

Ingela,

Good suggestion and information!  I hadn't looked for the father, Per Andersson, since until recently I wasn't even positive of his name. The note image with “Undan” comes from the Genline image 1250.113.55500. I don't have a death record for him. I'll have to see if I can trace him after this point in the husförhör.

Laura

The Death CD covers only 1950-1999.
Are we talking about a parish in Malmöhus län? Then you have the death records there too. From approx. 1860 until 1895/1900 they are however not under each separate parish but all together under _sc Malmöhus.
For records after 1895/1900 until 1991 you either contact the parish or the Archive in Lund, depending on whether the parish has transferred its records to the Archive or not. This page will tell you which parishes have been delivered to the Archive:
http://www.ra.se/lla/kyrkoarkiv.htm
When you contact the Archive, you must be very specific or they will charge you a fee. For simple look-ups they charge nothing.
The address is  landsarkivet@landsarkivet-lund.ra.se
Addresses to the parishes:

(click on the letter corresponding to the first letter of the parish you are looking for)
