Hi Mary,

Looking in my Dictionary for genalogists Ordbok för släktforskare by Henrik Anderö it says that Torsk is a fungal infection in the mouth and gullet, mainly found in infants.

Regards, Eva

Hej Mary!

A couple of theories:

Torsk, I believe, can sometimes mean dried or dehydrated, as in dried codfish.  Torr is actually the Swedish word for dry.  Perhaps in your case torsk may mean dehydration, perhaps due to fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.

Torsk (and I've seen it even spelled trosk in earlier centuries) is a fungal infection which usually appears in the mouth, lips, and throat.  Trosk and torsk are medical terms which translate to English as thrush.  Thrush is a yeast-related bacteria which in minute quantities appears naturally in the mouth, bowels and other body areas.  Diaper rash can even be a form of thrush.  Newborns can contact the disease via the birth canal.  Whether in untreated or in severe cases if it could cause death or severe stomach illness I don't know.

But these are just guesses...

Mvh,

Torsk, the fungal disease, is called thrush, candida or monilia in English.  The disease is caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a species of yeast that normally inhabits the mucous membranes as a benign saprophyte.  In some cases diptheria could have been diagnosed as torsk but that would be rare.
