I'm trying to figure out which parish Åsarna, Jämtlands län is in. I thought it was Alanäs parish, but I'm not certain. My father, Jons Elof Hägg, came from Åsarna in the 1920's, but without the name of the parish I always come to a road block.

Åsarna parish is connected to Berg parish in Jämtland. I'll try to check the name as I have some of my roots in the same area. Do you have birthyear, parent's name it will be easier...

Åsarna is a small town (village) wellknown of it's succesfull ski-history (cross-contry).
Åsarna lies in the south part of Jämtland -close to maintown Svenstavik -head of the community.

Karen!

A tough one. A search on Åsarna gives 9 hits in Jämtland.

As you can see from the list below, there is a Åsarna parish in Bergs kommun. Do you have any  information about your grandparents? That would give a better chance to track.

What is today known as Åsarna used to be Åsarne. As far as I can see there are no hits at e g Riksarkivet if you use the modern form Åsarna, at least not for a parish.

Åsarne was broken off from Berg parish in 1764 and made into what is known as a chapel parish (kapellförsamling). To all intents and purposes it quite soon became a proper daughter parish (annex-församling) - with one notable exception: they did not keep their own records until 1861. The records were kept by Berg until this time.

wow   Thanks, everybody!! I remember my grandfather telling us how everybody would ski down the mountain to church every Sunday, and rest half way there on his front porch.
My grandfather's name was Lars Emil Hägg, born July 24, 1891. My grandmother's name was Lena, born in 1890. I don't know her maiden name. My father was Jons Elof Hägg, born Nov. 1, 1921. My father had an older brother, John, who I think was born in 1919 or 1920.
Åsarna is Berg parish, eh? Not Alanäs.  sheeeesh  I'll never get this all straight. LOL
And I'll try a search for Åsarne, too.

And Åsarna is called and spelled that way -as the name Åsarne is the old spelling .....  Still used in clerical matters. i.e. the annual publikation Berg & Åsarne.
The old church stands on the ridge -with the old farming-village around it and there is a new church built in the newer village around the railway-station and the mainroad. The new church lies close to the river Ljungan.
I'm born in a nearby village Hoverberg, Berg parish and I lived in Åsarna 1960-1961 before I went south for more education.

Lars Emil Hägg emigrated 1923. I assume he's identical with Lars Hagg who died June 1982 (Illinois). His wife was Karolina Augusta Östlund, b. Sept 20th 1890 at Klövsjöbyn, parish of Klövsjö.

Well, genealogy is mostly a clerical matter in Sweden, so I suggest that you stick to Åsarne since for example NAD (the National Archive) will not show a hit if you write it the modern way. You will quite simply not find the parish.

No, Åsarne is NOT Berg parish. Åsarne is Åsarne parish, since 1764. But Berg kept the records until 1861.

Records later than 1861, look for Åsarne.
Records earlier than 1861, look for Berg.
For genealogy, stick to the old spelling ÅsarnE.
If you want to check out the modern-day community, what it looks like etc, use ÅsarnA.

According to the website of the Swedish Church (www.svenskakyrkan.se) the name of the parish is still today Åsarne, but that probably doesn't prevent the town/village from being called/spelled Åsarna.

Kind regards,
Eva

HOLY MOLY!!!
I'm just beside myself here. ALL this info is correct!!! This boy Elof is my father. Now I know why my grandfather always called my father by his middle name. Jöns Elof's grandfathetr was also named Jöns. To avoid confusion!

And Helena was my great-aunt. YESSS! I remember that name. Grandpa never mentioned another sister, though. She must have died young.

I always knew Lena was short for something. Now I know. Karolina. But I always thought Östlund was Helena's last name, not Lena's. Hmmmmm Maybe it was both of theirs.  Who CARES???
I have a TON more info than I ever dreamed possible!!!
Thank-you all SO much!!!!

Karen,

Karolina took her stepfather's surname. (Jöns Olofsson Östlund; yes, another Jöns.) The parents listed in family 1 in 1890 (Anders Nystedt and Brita Olofsdotter) were the parents of Ingeborg in family 2, who was the mother of Karolina Augusta, etc. Notice that in 1900, that daughter Ingeborg was named Ingeborg Andersdotter (daughter of Anders) Nystedt.

It is hard not to find illegitimate children in your ancestry. I certainly have a bunch of them. Read this interesting article about finding the unknown father.

Hello Karen,

Yes You have a lot of cousins in Sweden. I am one relative to You. Your grandmother and my great grandmother, Sofia Östlund where sisters. They had the same mother, Ingeborg Andersdotter Nystedt, but different fathers. Karolina's father was according to verbal acknowledgment the carpenter Lars Emil Hägg.

Karolina had three brothers that went to North America, Olof (b. 1897), Albert (b. 1903) and Johannes (b. 1907). Olof and Johannes left Sweden on the 5th oh June 1926, with destination Winnipeg. Albert left Sweden in 1922.

Ingeborg Andersdotter Nystedt, was born on October 29th 1865 in Klövsjö parish. She was married on February 21st 1897 with Jöns Olofsson Östlund (1862-1950). Ingeborg died on April 19th 1940, and is buried at Klövsjö cemetary.

Ingeborgs parents where Anders Nystedt born January 15th 1837 in Berg parish, dead August 21st 1922 in Klövsjö, and his wife Brita Olofsdotter, born November 5th 1847 in Klövsjö parish, dead October 24th 1903 in Klövsjö.

I have been doing research in our family for many years and have a lot more to tell you, and I even have a photo of your grandmother's grandfather Anders Nystedt to send to You so I do hope we will have more contact!

Hello again, I just want to correct myself. In the excitement I wrote that Lars Emil Hägg was Karolinas father, wich obviously is not true, he was her husband. The verbal acknowledgement I was talking about was concerning their son, John Reinhold b. July 13 1918, and dead May 17 1945.

Hope to hear from You soon.

I'm going to have to teach these skeletons in my family's closet how to dance if they keep coming out. LOL!! Lärs and Karolina weren't married until 1920. Oooopsie!!! At least I know MY daddy was legitimate. Plus, he was the spitting image of Lärs. : ) I have a photo of John and Jöns as young boys and they don't look a whole lot alike. Even John's wedding photo - there's not very much of a family resemblance. Unless he took after Karolina's side. I don't have a photo of her.

wow I'm reading this to my mother right now. She's amused by all this. Seems Daddy and John's baby sister has a fake wedding anniversary they celebrate. *wink* *wink*

I'm just blown away by all of this. All I wanted to know was Åsarna's parish!

Saaayyyyyy....... I have some socks I can't locate. They're last known address was the dryer. Anybody know where they are now?

ok - 5 minutes has just passed, with me sitting here, staring at the monitor. I'm going to have to take some serious time to digest all of this info. Thomas, I will deffinately be in touch. Ingrid, YESSS! What a wonderful Christmas story.
