23 people including my grandmothers aunt and uncle are listed on the Emigrant CD as coming in the 1870's from the parish of PERLANDA in Kalmar län (H).  Where is that parish? Does it have a different name today?
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

There is no parish i Kalmar län, with the name Perlanda. The most similar name is Mörlunda.

What is the name of Your grandmothers aunt or uncle?

Thanks Torbjörn and Sam,
This is my grandmothers uncle, aunt and cousin:
Samuel August Palm b/9 April 1835  (Pelarne??)
Anna Sophia Lindblad b/10 May 1842 Ingatorp (F)
d:Hilma Christina Palm b/1 June 1869 (???)
The Emigrant CD shows S.A.Palm with Anna Sofi and Hilma leaving from Perlanda in 1870 to Chicago.

One reference to Perlanda was also found in a newspaper clipping in Kiron, Iowa where they moved in 1873 or 74.

Thanks for any other supporting information that this location may indeed be Pelarne (which makes some sense as it is not far from Ingatorp).

Regards, Glenn

Perlarne is the same as Perlanda?  From a newspaper article describing the Golden wedding anniversary of my great, great grantparents, Johan Gustaf Anderson and Anna Lovisa Holm, I learned that they were married in Perlanda, Sweden. From records showing their birth in Kalmar lan, I imagine that Perlanda must be in that county. Why do various sources refer to Perlanda if they actually are referring to Perlarne?  I don't understand.  Thank you very much.

That's it!  You found them.  He was indeed a shoemaker and I know that he came to America in about 1888.  Wonderful.

What is the PLF database?  Is that available online?  Also, is the text at the end of your last message (beginning with Ovriga uppgifter...) a reference to the source of the information?

Thank you very much.

This afternoon someone referred me to the online gazetteer named ortnamnsregestret (http://www2.sofi.se/SOFIU/topo1951/_cdweb/index.htm).  I'm told there is the following reference to Perlanda (although I have not yet found it):

Perlanda, see Perlunda in Frustuna parish, Södermanland county, Sweden.

Isn't this quite a distance from Rumskulla, Sodra Vi, Vimmerby etc. (which is where my family lived)?

This may not yield any fruit, but I thought I'd mention it in case you thought it might be worth pursuing.  Any thoughts?

Sincerely,

Jim Allen

Jim,

The parishes Pelarne and Rumskulla border on each other, so Pelarne sounds much more likely than Perlanda in Södermanland! As you're not the first person to come across the name Perlanda, only to have the person in question turn up in or near Pelarne (you definitely found the best thread for your post!), it's probably a spelling variation like you say.

Thank you very much Anna-Carin.  I believe you and Sam must be right.  If others have come across Perlanda in their research and later found the person in question turning up in Pelarne, it seems plausible that the same would be true in my case.  Glenn Gustafson's emigrant CD (referred to in the initial question of this thread) and my Nebraska newspaper article both refer to a parish (Perlanda) that doesn't exist.  Thanks to the direction provided by you and Sam, I am glad that this is not the end of the story for me and that my search can continue in Pelarne.  However, I am still confused as to why two words with so different spellings ever got mixed up with one another.  Both words begin with the letters Pe, but beyond that they do not seem to be similar.  Can you speculate as to how this mistake came about?  There may not be an answer.  I'm just curious.

You have all been so kind in helping me with my questions.  I am most grateful.  Thank you sincerely.

Jim

Here's some speculations off the top of my head. Many place names have gradually changed over time, due to contractions, spelling drift etc - presumably this can happen to parish names as well. In that case, Perlanda (Per's land) might be the archaic form that eventually turned into Pelarne (the pillars). Or, maybe it was called Pelarne all the time, but a parson who was new in the area assumed that spelling drift had taken place, and used an overcorrected spelling Perlanda. Or maybe he'd once lived near a place named Perlanda, and occasionally mixed them up when he was writing.

Wikipedia says Pelarne church is the oldest wooden church still in use in Sweden; presumed to date to the early 1200s (photo)

Hello Jim!
You will find Pelarne church easy if you download Google Earth and search for Pelarne kyrka Vimmerby.
All your family we have talked about have lived in the area around Vimmerby - there is no connection to Sodermanland.
Thank you for the copy of photo of Johan gustaf Andersson and Anna lovisa Holm from Rumskulla and Sodra Vi!
