My Ancester Pehr Eric Lindberg is listed at Barnhuset. Is this an orphanage?
He is listed on Genline page 8 Cell - Fangleset in 1855. His wife is listed in Lindbacken page 33  It looks like he is: portMaskter (handwriting is hard to read). Can someone decipher this for me.

I got an e-mail that said he was a janitor. Do you happen to know why they would be listed separately? I am working on Genline through Ancestry. Unfortunately I don't have the GED number. I have pretty much traced them from 1847 through 1860. I thought from the surrounding pages that it looked like a prison or orphanage. Thanks for responding. I still need to translate some of the other terms.

Shirley,

Cell-Fängelset was a prison and he worked there as guard, I think he was the man who guarded the maingate.

No! Pehr Erik Lindberg was indeed - as suggested to Shirley and in what best can be described as - a kind of janitor. Nothing else. The fact that he worked in a prison, does not mean he guarded any gates or doors. ;) Another word to use to describe his profession could be Concierge or - more easy to understand - a Carekeeper.

When refering to a Gate keeper, we are actually back to medieval England with the guards outside the castles. ;)

Shirley! Qu. Barnhuset was just a name of that specific area of Stockholm or block of houses. The word Barnhus does indeed mean orphanage, however, the reason why this block of houses/buildings were kalled Barnhuset goes back to the 1700's when in fact, there was an orphanage there.

The family lived close to the prison. You can see Läns(county)cellfängelse and Lindbacken in the marked sqare on this map from 1867. It takes time for the picture to be clear, after zooming.

I don´t buy that explanation. I do not think he was a caretaker or a janitor. He was in the list after the worden and before the other guards, his status was much higher than a janitor.

Thank you so much for the information and maps. I got more than I thought I could ever find. It looks like they may have lived across the street.

I have another question regarding this family. In 1851 Rorstrand PE Lindberg is found with his family. Also there is a Fredricka. Can you tell me what the words are previous to the name. It is page 7 of the Adolf Fredrik Homestead. Sorry, I don't have the GED.
