Following the name of my g g grandfather in the birth record of my g grandfather in 1872, it says låghistuge or something spelled very similar.

Johannes Andersson låghistuge

I see other fathers on the page also have this word follow the name of the father. Yet other fathers have other words listed after their names.

Perhaps it is the name of their occupation.

Does anyone know what this word means?

Thanks, Scott

Hard to tell, do you have a picture of that word to add hear, or the name of the parish he lived in? It is easier to see the word. Maybe it says fattigstuga?

I think the word can be läg[en]hetseg.  (owner of a small part of the land) (the last part in läg[en]hetseg = eg = ägare = owner)
If you take a look in Levene AI:14 (1871-1877) Bild 63 / sid 57 you can see they live in Lägenhet[en] Hömossen.
Kind regards,
Olle Elm

Thanks Olle! Yes, the words Hömossen Lägenhet appear before the name of the father in some of the Household Examination records.

I was told Hömossen was the location of the property and Lägenhet meant it was a small property.

But we couldn't figure out exactly what this word was. It looks like they may have tried to write in a small space and therefore they squeezed the letters together.

If anyone disagrees with this conclusion that this word means owner of a small property, please let me know.

Thank you everyone! Scott

Scott,

Then it was an owner of a small property, but now we use the word lägenhet for a apartment in a apartment house
