Greetings!
I am looking for information on an ancestor that was sentenced to the Stockholm prison on March 29, 1843. His name is Jan Petter Uppgren (son of Per Uppgren and Greta Hallstrom.)He was born October 2, 1820 in Stavby, Uppsala, and supposedly sentenced to five months for fighting and then after he left prison he went to live at Hedvig Eleornora Forsamling in Stockholm on 1849 on 11 July.
My questions:

Is it possible to verify that he did go to prison?
If so, what were the charges?
Could he have worked as a shoemaker (his occupation)during his sentence?
Was Hedvig Eleornora Forsamling a church that took in single men after they left prison?

I was told that during that time, people could be put in prison for very minor infractions, so therefore I am very curious to know if his wa also minor.
Any information on this person would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mary

Jan/Johan Petter Uppgren was not sentenced to prison for his fight in 1842, but to pay a fine of 5 skilling banco (the Swedish currency at the time).

Like his father he was a shoemaker before he moved from Vaksala to Stockholm in March 1843. In Stockholm he was (April 5, 1843) enlisted as an infantryman of Andra livgardet (from 1894 Göta livgarde). He was enlisted again, for three more years, on July 8, 1846. He left Andra livgardet on July 9, 1849.

When he moved to Hedvig Eleonora parish on July 14, 1849 his title was ”f. d. gardist” (former guardsman).

Thank you, Maude for the clarafication. I knew my translation from Swedish to English was incorrect.

I looked up Andra livgardt and it translates to Second lifeguard. Is it true that in the era of 1843, their primary duties were to keep peace in Stocholm? And for ceremonial duties? Can you tell from records what his rank was?

Also is Hedvig Eleonora Parish a church or an area of Stockholm? I am still at a loss if he lived on church grounds or lived in a residence (house/apartment) in Stockholm as he plied his trade as a shoemaker.
Thank you,
Mary

I have ancestors born in Hedvig Eleonora parish in the city of Stockholm. Hedvig Eleonora is both a church building *and* a geographical area. My ancestors were not born in nor did they live in the church building or the grounds around the church. They lived in a geographical area in which they were registered in that parish. Even if they hadn't ever set foot within that church building, they were registered in the church books for that parish.

There is a picture of the church on this page.

Hedvig Eleonora is the name of a parish and of its church in Stockholm. People who lived in the area of Ladugårdslandet (today Östermalm) and Djurgården were registered in Hedvig Eleonora parish (until the end of the 19th century also called Ladugårdsland parish).

As a former guardsman  J P Uppgren moved into an ordinary rented apartment or a rented room in Ladugårdslandet, in 1849 his address was Skeppargatan 39. He was not a shoemaker in Stockholm but a police - this was his occupation when he married Maria Margareta Lenell (born Feb 28, 1810 in Lena) on Jan 15, 1851 in Hedvig Eleonora. Their address was Storgatan 19 (in Ladugårdslandet). In November 1854 they moved to Jacob parish, in the Norrmalm area in Stockholm, and lived at Enkhusgränd 3.

I think you are right about the duties of Andra livgardet. J P Uppgren was just one of the enlisted men, no officer.

You may find some useful information on Swedish parish system at www.genealogi.se/roots.

To Judy and Maude,
Now it makes sense. I had originally looked up  Hedvig Eleonora and I only saw reference to the church thanks for all the info and web sites.

To Maude,
As to the  J P Uppgren you list as living in Stockholm in 1854:
The Jan/Johan Uppgren (my Great, great grandfather) that I have researched came over to the US in 1853 on the ship named SUPERIOR. The ship manifest lists his occupation as shoemaker. (I believe this is correct)On 7-25-1855 married Hedvig Strid (also from Sweden)in North Bridge Plymouth, Massachusetts. He then settled in Carver county, Minnesota bought a farm  and had 10 children.

Do you think that the J P Uppgren you cite could possibly be the same man and that the dates of his marriage were transcribed? I would find it very interesting to learn that he had another wife in Sweden.
I guess that if your records show that he never left Sweden, then he is not the one that came to the U.S.

Thanks for reading this,
Mary

It looks like Jan/Johan Petter Uppgren, b. Oct 2, 1820 in Stavby, left his wife - without a divorce - and emigrated to America without informing the parish of his plans.

Propably Maria Margareta Uppgren moved from Hedvig Eleonora to Jakob with her and her husband's mutual ”exit permit” in 1854 and from Jakob to Falun, Dalarna province, in September 1859 (Jakob BIIa:8 page 161). Only Maria Margareta arrived at Falun, in November 1859, and she stayed there with her sister and brother-in-law for a year.

In Falu Kristine household records 1857-1866 AI:24 page 75 there is a note about Maria Margareta Uppgren, in translation: ”Married with former police Joh. Pet. Uppgren in” - and the last word is, I think - ”California”. Would somebody else have a look at the note, please?

Maria Margareta Uppgren left Falun for Stockholm in November 1860 and was registered in Hedvig Eleonora parish Dec 31, 1860 (Hedvig Eleonora BIa:13 page 268) with the note: ”Married with police Uppgren whose whereabouts are unknown.”

Maria Margareta Uppgren called herself ”skomakareenka” - shoemaker's widow - in her annual census/tax registration statements after 1862, though she was still married to J P Uppgren when she died on Feb 1, 1901 in Sabbatsberg poorhouse (in Stockholm), where she had been living since August 1879. When she came there her birth year was corrected to 1808.

Dear Maude,

Wow! I am so surprised to learn of this and so will my living relatives. I do not think anyone imagined this of John Upgren! He was a such a respected man in Minnesota. In fact upon his death, Oct. 2,1820, the newspapers put the news of his death on the front page. I quote the first paragraph:

The death of John P. Upgren, own of the oldest Swedish settlers of Bergen Township, took place at his home Sunday afternoon, and his death marks the passing of the father of one of the best families in our neighborhood.

Thank you for the time you put in this. I am still surprised that such a respected man had left his first wife to end up in the poorhouse.

Thanks so very much,
Mary

Sorry Maude I made a mistake:
For what it is worth John Upgren died on July 12, 1907 in Minnesota...not Oct, 2 1820.(That was his birthdate)
Mary
P.S. He died of a stroke.

Well, there may have been other J P Uppgren - so, is his birthdate Oct 2, 1820 and/or his birthplace Stavby confirmed by any American source?

According to the news paper article, (The Lester Praire News, July 25, 1907)they cite John Upgren's birthdate as Oct. 2, 1820, Sweden.
I also have a copy of his Marriage certificate (Massachusetts)that he lists his parent's as Peter and Margaret.
On the Sweden-EASy, Indexing project C40769-2 lists a Son named Jan Petter Uppgren born on Oct 2, 1820 in Stavby, Uppsala, Sweden to parents Per Uppgren and Greta Hallstrom.  (The name Greta in U.S. could be interpeted as Margaret.

I believe the J P Uppgren that you found is him. Because I did find that he had been arrested which you confirmed and he moved to Hedvig Eleonora, which you also confirmed.
Everything seems to fit, except for the date of November 1854 when they they moved to Jacob parish. My J P Uppgren shows he arrived in New York on 8-18-1853. (The name on the ship registar does state S P Uppgreen, different spelling, but birthdate 1820 and occupation, shoemaker. It states the port of departure is Gothenburg and Stockholm Sweden.

What are your thoughts?
Mary

Dear Maude,
The more  think about it maybe the ship registar I have for John Uppgren is not for my Great great grandfather. He might have come to the U.S. at a later date as in 1854. At the time I found the registar I assumed that the initials S. P.  could be read as J. P. (And the birthdate and occupation of shoemaker matched his data.)

With this new information I am convinced that the right man is found and that your ancestor actually was a bigamist. In all Stockholm sources where I have found him, he is listed with birthdate Oct 2, 1820 and birthplace Stavby.

Former police J P Uppgren made his last census/tax registration statement (not scanned) in Stockholm in November 1852, so very likely he left before November 1853.

Hello Mary!

I had no idea that Jan Petter Uppgren had emigrated to America. Very interesting! I couldn't find him after 1839, when he left Stavby. Jan/Johan Petter was the brother of my fathers mothers fathers fathers mother, Charlotta Uppgren (1828-1913).

As you may alredy know, Jan Petter was the third child of eight siblings to Per Uppgren (1787-1830) and Greta Hallström (1789-1838).

His siblings were:
1. Johanna Ulrika Uppgren, born Nov. 4, 1814 in Ubby, Stavby. Married Johan Brodin, 3 children, died between 1890-1900 in Uppsala.
2. Erik Valdemar Uppgren, born Dec. 19, 1817 in Ubby, Stavby. Married Gustava Lund, 7 children, died July 22, 1904 in Ubby, Stavby.
3. Jan Petter Uppgren, born Oct. 2, 1820 in Ubby, Stavby. (your ancestor)
4. Karin Uppgren (Engström), born April 16, 1822 in Ubby, Stavby. Married Jan Granstedt, about 4-5 children, died in 1895, in Harg, Uppsala.
5. Karl Uppgren, born Feb. 26, 1824 in Ubby, Stavby. Died March 20, 1826 in Ubby, Stavby.
6. Anders Gustav Uppgren Ling, born March 10, 1826 in Ubby, Stavby. Solider, married with Stina Lisa Kihl, no children. Died Feb. 10, 1895 in Stavby.
7. Charlotta Uppgren, born July 25, 1828 in Ubby, Stavby. (my ancestor) Married with Jan Petter Persson, 5 children. Died Jan. 22, 1913 in Edeby, Väddö, Norrtälje.
8. Greta Stina Uppgren, born March 19, 1830, in Ubby, Stavby. Not found after 1854.

It would be interesting to lern more about your ancestor Jan/Johan Petter, for example, the children he had, grandchildren etc. His children were  cousins of my ancestor Charlotta's children.

Greetings!
Daniel Stefansson

Hello Daniel!
So happy to hear from you! Jan/Johan is my great great grandfather. He has been a real challenge to find information on, because his last name changed (or was transcribed)so much, after he came to the U.S his name on documents were spelled thusly:
UPGREN (Massachusetts marriage license)
UPGRAIN (1855 Massachusetts State Census)
UPPGREN  (1860 US Census) Living in Minnesota, he registered as a farmer
UPGREEN (1863 Civil war draft card)
UPPGEN  (1865 Minnesota state census)
UPPGREN (1870 U.S. Census)
And he chanded his first name to John Peter.
It wasn't until 1875 that his last name and family settled on the name UPGREN. Of course, good or bad, that is now my last name!

John's spouse & Children:
Hedvig Ulrika Strid 1832 - 1925 (Spouse)
John W. Upgren 1856 -  John was born in Massechusetts (all others in Minnesota)
Amanda Upgren 1863 -
Gustave Upgren 1864 -
Charles Upgren 1867 -
Misner Upgren 1869 -
Albert Upgren 1872 -
Hedvig Upgren 1872 -
Emil Julius Upgren 1874 - 1919 (My great grandfather)
Elmer Upgren 1875 -
Edward Upgren 1877 -
I have alot of information on this man, his wife and Emil Upgren. I would be happy to share it with you. Please E-mail at allanher@frontiernet.net and we can chat.

Regards,
Mary
