Thank-you all for your help. This is wonderful!
I have a couple questions though. What would Gift man, far i familjen mean and Gift kvinna, mor i familjen?

We have a family story that said our name was gren and Lars changed it to Johnson  when he came to the USA. The story says that we were some part of Rolalty and we did something wrong and one was beheaded. How would I research something like this?

Hi Jodie!

Gift man, far i familjen = married man, father of the family
Gift kvinna, mor i familjen = married woman, mother of the family.

Regarding the man that became one head shorter, I will try to check this up at the same time as my own old soldier who was a prisoner in 1788 in the war against the russians (for the king Gustav III).

Do you know if your ancestor was named Gren and/or when the capital punishment occurred?

I don't know what family member was beheaded. All I have is the story that has been handed down through the generations when my Uncle researched the family tree in Germany while he was in the US Service back in the 40's or 50's. He has died and all records are gone. But the story he told was that our name was Green and it was changed to Johnson when our Grandfather Lars Gren came to the US, something to do with us belonging to some sort of Royalty and that one of us was beheaded.
You know how a story changes when it's passed from one to another. But so far I have found out that we were Gren's and not Johnson's so that part of the story is true. So far I haven't found any brothers of Lars, just 2 sisters. From what I have read on capital punishment, it didn't take much to be beheaded. But I would like to confirm the story if possible.
How would I find Jöns Grens military info? And what age he might have died?
This is a major breakthrough for me!! I have been looking for a couple years. Not only did he change his last name but his first name as well.
I have an old photo from a photo studio and I think it is from sweden, Did they keep records of bussinesses in Kristianstad? I'd like to find out when they existed. Then I might better date the members. The Studio Brink & Ekman or Ehman Kristianstad.
I would love to find family still in Sweden. The language has me stuck in other websites. Thank-you again for your help.

We had a photographer Nils Ekman in Kristianstad.
Two portraits taken by Ekman are shown at Porträttfynd (www.genealogi.se then you find Porträttfynd in the menu to the left) One of the portraits appears taken about 1910.

One researcher has the Gren family in the DISBYT data base. I just e-mailed her telling her you are interested.

For Bo Nordenfors,
Thank-you for the connection. I wonder if they all dressed in black back then for photos? The bottom signature stamp of the portait is similar to the ones you showed me but of course with the 2 names instead of the one. Dating it at 1910 would be after my Great Grandfather left Sweden.
I would very much so like to communicate with the other reasearcher. Thanks again for your help.

For Leif,
Thank-you for the connection to the wedsite on the military. Unfortunatly Jöns Gren wasn't listed there. Maybe as they get more.

Questions:
1.)Does Lund have Birth certificates or Parish records that I can mail for?
2.) Is there a CD for purchase of all of the Parishes in Skåne, with the list of households and birth info? Where would I buy one if available?
3.) Could someone look up Jöns death date and maybe who is parents are.
Thanks

Jodie,
there is a special data base for soldiers from Skåne, Skånes Knektregister, however the entire information online is in Swedish. I will e-mail you - I can help but there is a small fee, unfortunately...the schedule to fill in is also on their website, but in Swedish.  (www.sgf.m.se  -  Skånes Knektregister)

Jodie,
I have e-mailed some information from Everöd parish taken from www.ddss.nu - a data base with records from many parishes in Skåne, far from all, I think. It is a free data base , one can search also in English. Unfortunately Åhus in not in the base.

Hello Jodie

1) Lund has all the scanned records older than 1895-1896 (some parishes until 1918) and it?s possible to order extract from these records. But it can be REALLY expensive since they bill you by hour if they have to search.

2) See Bo:s answer abowe.
Another possibility is to order CD:s from the parish you want at http://www.digiarkiv.se/
unfortunately information only in Swedish for the moment. Left menu Kyrkoböcker, choose parish under Församling and you can see what?s available. The C-series are birth-, marriage- and deathrecords and the A-series are parish catechetical meetings. More translations; mail me.

These CD:s are digital photos of the origin records (very good quality in colour) and the staff at Digiarkiv are very forthcoming if you demand something not yet digitalized.

OK I went to this site www.ddss.nu. I have run across this before and couldn't quite figure out how to use it. I tried it out by putting in dates (years) a couple before and after of the ones that Bo gave me to try it out. I did find Jön Flink and Berta on the list.
I am so confused... I would have never known to pick them from the list. How do you go from Flink as a surname to Gren. Or Jönsson to Flinks? How do you do that?
You guys are so helpful. Thank-you so much!

An explanation about how surnames in old Sweden were formed you will find at http://www.genealogi.se/roots/, left menu Swedish roots? and the link in
To read more about Swedish names, click here.

In addition to this one can mention that craftsmen often changed their names when they started their education. For example: my surname was taken 29/4 1888 when Anders Persson decided to become a shoemaker. His father was Per Andersson and ..... until a soldier called Rosengren caused me trouble. (Still does) :-)

Jodie,

Irene Petersen is the one who is researching Jöns Gren, she reports she has a lot of information,
back and forward - but her English is not good. I said I could help her translating.
Perhaps are you related with Irene, let us hope!

Will revert soon.
