I am looking for my grandfather in the 1880 census. He was born Johan Fredrik Larsson 9 Sep 1873 in St Johannes parish in Stockholm. I have information from the 1890 and 1900 census, but I wish to know who he was living with in 1880. He moved to Österhaninge in 1881, so I believe he was still in his birth parish in 1880. He later took the surname Stefansson

I can't identify him in 1890 using your information (unless he is the gosse = boy listed below), so perhaps you could share that information from these censuses. (I haven't checked 1900.)

Stefansson, Johan Fredrik
Tj.gosse

b. 1873 i Stockholm (Stockholms stad)

Man, single

Oxnö
Österhaninge (Stockholms län, Södermanland)

Place of birth (original source): Stockholm

1880 is not complete on SVAR and there is no census cd for 1880. None of the children named Johan Fredrik were living in Sankt Johannes parish in 1880. It looks as if only part of Jakob och Johannes parish is transcribed.

This person might have used Larsson as an adult, but I can't figure how where Stefansson could have come from. Since there are probably others who aren't yet on the SVAR site, this is only a possibility.

The parents of Johan Fredrik were Jan Petter Larsson and Clara Cecilia Olsdotter, according to his birth note. (The mother's name Clara is crossed out in a migration roll 1877 and replaced by Anna.)
Jan Petter Larsson was born 13 Feb 1844 in Fågelvik, Värmland county. Anna Cecilia Olsdotter was born 20 Apr 1837 in Kristianopel, Blekinge county. They were married 26 Dec 1871. Johan Fredrik was their first and only child.

According to Österhaninge migration roll 1881 and household examination records 1881-1886 Johan Fredrik Larsson was placed as a foster-child at Oxnö, Österhaninge, by Prins Carls uppfostringsanstalt (Prince Carl's reformatory school/institution for juveniles in Katarina parish, Stockholm). He probably lived at the institution for some time before he came to Oxnö 17 Nov 1881, although he is not found in Katarina parish records. His mother suffered from cancer and died 15 Dec 1881 in Hedvig Eleonora parish.

The family moved from Johannes to Adolf Fredrik parish 6 Nov 1877, address Norra Tullportsgatan 15.
They returned to Johannes 1 May 1878, the address is hard to read, Rensgränd(?)
19 Nov 1879 worker Jan Petter Larsson moved to Hedvig Eleonora parish, address Roslagstorg 20, where he became a potatoe dealer. The same day his wife and son moved to Adolf Fredrik, address Saltmätargatan 19. In the migration rolls there is no explanation why the family separated.
1 May 1880 mother and son moved to Hedvig Eleonora. When Anna Cecilia Olsdotter/Larsson died she was still married and her address was Roslagstorg 12.

Jan Petter Larsson left Hedvig Eleonora parish for America in February 1883.

Johan Fredrik Larsson/Stefansson returned to Stockholm (from Österhaninge) in December 1898 and emigrated to America from Maria Magdalena parish in February 1901.

The archives of Prins Carls uppfostringsanstalt are held by Stockholms stadsarkiv, Regional Archives of Stockholm, email address  stadsarkivet@ssa.stockholm.se

Maud,
Thank you, thank you, a million times, thank you. I have been looking for years for some of this information. The story is a strange one. I had the birth and emigration info for my great-grandfather and grandfather, but very little on my great-grandmother. My great-grandfather and his wife separated, cause unknown, and he left his family and emigrated alone. My grandfather said he was raised by his aunt after his mother died. Her name was Katarina Maria Larsdotter, born same place as her brother. When she moved to Stockholm, she took her father's surname Stefansson, no idea why. When my grandfather went to live with her, he, too, took that surname. I have much information on the family, but my great-grandmother was one of those brick walls you just helped tear down.I can never tell you how much you have done for me. Karen

Karen,
I guess your grandfather was very fond of his aunt as he took her (and his grandfather's) name, but he cannot have stayed with her for very long, since he was sent to Österhaninge 1881 (before his mother died) and stayed there until 1898.

Are you still looking for info on his aunt Katarina Maria Larsdotter Stefansson (b. 21 Jul 1848 in Fågelvik) after August 1892 when she moved to Adolf Fredrik? She was married there, 30 Oct 1892, to bagaregesäll (baker journeyman) Johan Pettersson Halin b. 12 Feb 1843 in Backaryd, Blekinge county. He was a widower (his wife Augusta Magdalena Elisabet Lindholm died 1889) and had a minor son, Nils Olof Herman b. 8 Aug 1883 in Adolf Fredrik.

Johan Pettersson Halin died 13 Jan 1921 in Gustav Vasa parish, Stockholm, and was buried 19 Jan at Norra begravningsplatsen. I found him (but not Katarina Maria) at http://hittagraven.stockholm.se/search.php?language=en
In census 1900 they are found in block Gullvivan Nr 9, Adolf Fredrik parish, living with a daughter of Johan: Anna Sofia Bernhardina Halin, a seamstress, b. 1873 in Adolf Fredrik.

Maud,
Thank you again. I have copies of the 1890 and 1900 census for my grandfather and also for his aunts Katarina and Karolina. I do wish I could find Katarina in 1880. It appears she moved around abit. She was in Storkyrkan in 1890.
Do you have any idea why my grandfather would have been sent to Prins Carls as a boy of 8?
Also, SSA told me previouly that my ggrandfather emigrated in 1881. Where did you find his 1883 emigration? Maybe that's why Icouldn't find his arrival in the US.
I will contact SSA to get records of my grandfather's time at Prins Carls.
Thank you, again. Karen

Karen,
My source of the emigration is the migration roll of Hedvig Eleonora parish 1883. Also found in Emibas:

Post 16782
Larsson, Jan Peter
Potatishandlare (unmarried man)
b. 2/13/1844 in Fågelvik, Värmlands län (Värmland)
Emigrated 2/1/1883
from 11 roten, Hedvig Eleonora, Stockholms stad (Uppland)
to Amerika
Se även infl. Hedvig Eleonora BIA:23 9/10 s.355
Source: SVAR; Migration Roll, vol. Hedvig Eleonora BIIA:15 10/14 s.596
Emibas migration file ID: Hedvig Eleonora A 1883 005
Note on emigration: förlustig medborgerligt förtroende till 18840123.
----

The note förlustig medborgerligt förtroende till 18840123 means that Jan Petter Larsson had been sentenced to lose his citizen reliance until 23 Jan 1884. I have not been able to find out what crime he was convicted for. Losing medborgerligt förtroende for some time (years) was a common extra punishment for several crimes. This could be the reason why Jan Petter Larsson left Sweden.

Prins Carls uppfostringsanstalt took care of poor/neglected/depraved children. After some time at the institution they usually were placed in foster-homes.

Pigan (maid/house-maid) Katarina Maria Larsdotter (Larsson), b. 21 Jul 1848 in Fågelvik, came from Värmdö parish, Stockholm county, to Jakob parish, Stockholm, 30 Dec 1879. She moved to Storkyrko parish 14 May 1880, where she was employed as a maid by an innkeeper Mejer Hirsch. She started to call herself Stefansson in 1880 or 1881. She left Storkyrko parish for Maria Magdalena parish in October 1891.
Her sister Karolina Larsdotter Stefansson b. 17 Jun 1853 in Fågelvik, came from Uppsala to Storkyrko parish in June 1889 and worked as a maid at the same inn until December 1891 when she moved to Johannes parish. Source: Rotemansarkivet, a population register of Stockholm city 1878-1926.

I have not found Karolina Larsdotter Stefansson in the migration rolls of Johannes parish 1891-1892, nor in census 1900. Where did you find her 1900?

1900, Karolina found for me by Allan Hansson in Adolf Fredrik, rote 6, Nejlikan N:o 1, Stockholm, born 1853, Fåvelvik, Värmlands län, married. Husband Ludvig Nilson, born 1853 in By, Värmlands län, bleckslagare. Also Elsa Karolina Lovisa, born 1891 in Stockholm.
There are also two young men with them listed as plåtslagare, Nils Oskar Villgott, 1882 in Stockholm and Johan Ludvig Torvald, 1880 in Stockholm. Karolina is listed as mor/fru, which I assume is mother/wife. It looks like both sisters married later in life.

I suppose this is the info you have been given from census 1900:

Homeparish:  Adolf Fredrik rote 6
Residence:  Nejlikan N:o 1
Ludvig Nilson, b. 1853 in By Värmlands län, Bleckslagare
Karolina, b. 1853 in Fågelvik Värmlands län
Elsa Karolina Lovisa, b. 1891 in Stockholm
Nils Oskar Villgott, b. 1882 in Stockholm, Plåtslagare
Johan Ludvig Torvald, b. 1880 in Stockholm, Plåtslagare

Unfortunately, the above Karolina is NOT your relative. This Karolina was born 21 Apr 1853 in Fågelvik, her maiden name was Lindgren and she was, according to the birth records, mother of all the three children born 1880-1891.

Maud,
Again I thank you. My Karolina was born 17 Jun 1853 to Lars Stefansson 23 Sep 1801-26 Aug 1856 and Anna Larsdotter 6 Sep 1810-25 Aug 1868. They were married in 1837 after his first wife died in 1836. I have birth and death dates for all of their 10 children except death dates for Katarina and Karolina.

Today I received by email 13 pages of documents regarding my grandfather and his time in foster care. I will need to get them translated as my Swedish is minimal, but I do see that several of them are signed by Maria and Carolina Larson. Looks like Katarina Maria may have used just Maria for a time. There is one document that appears to attest that the two women were employed.
I recognized the name of Mejer Hirsch. SSA even included his school report cards.
