I am trying to find information about my Great Grandfather John Anderson Blomquist, born March 16, 1849th The graphic below possibly written by himself after he settled in Norway contains information that may describe where he was born (somewhere is Dalsland) and where he was confirmed. I have tried to understand what he wrote and look at maps of Dalsland to figure this out but have not been unsuccessful. Can someone please tell me what the note says and identify the names of the villages and church in the document?

 Also my father believes John Anderson Blomquist may have been in the Swedish military before he settled in Norway in or before 1871st Where would I begin a search for Military and emigration records?

According to the census 1890 he was born in Långared, Älvsborgs län, Västergötland and lived 1890 in Smedserud, Boda, Värmalands län, Värmland. Furthermore he lived together with his wife Matilda Karlsdotter born 1854 in Boda and the child Gerda Emilia born 1890. There is also an older lady Johanna Bengtsdotter born 1824 who may be mother to John or Matilda.

Stig

I took a look at the book of birth Långared 1849 but there is no one born on March 16. There is a Janne born September 19 and a Johannes born November 26. Both of them have fathers named Anders which make them possible candidates. To find out you have to follow them in the house hold examinations.

Stig

Karl-Johan;

 Thank you for finding Johan Blomqvist in the Central Soldiers Registration. The simple fact of matching of his birth date gives me reasonable confidence that this is my great grandfather. My father, who is 88, was very happy to hear this news.

 I was not aware this resource was available and it may become more valuable as I begin to look deeper into his family history.

 It will always amaze and interest me as how the spelling of names change throughout our human history. This will only add to my challenges as I research my family further back in time. A note I have that is written in John's own hand has the name spelled Blomquist. Norwegian parish records Documenting his first marriage in Øystre Slidre, Oppland, and his children's birth registrations in Evje show the name spelled Blomkvist while his death registration list the name as Blomquist. Most of his children with exception of one came to the U.S. using the name Blomquist. A document reporting the immigration of the first child to immigrate to the U.S. shows the name as Blomkvist.

Thank you Stig for trying to find my Grandfather. Unfortunately the graphic from my original note was unable to be displayed. This plaster everybody who is trying to help me at a big disadvantage. I will try to post it again for all to see.

 The graphic below is a note possibly written by John Anderson Blomquist after he settled in Norway. It contains information that may describe where he was born (somewhere is Dalsland) and where he was confirmed.

 I have tried to understand what the note says and look at maps of Dalsland to figure this out but have not been successful. I can only understand small pieces of the note and can not make out the information I need to continue my search. Can someone please translate the note and identify the names of the villages and church in the document?

Arne,
 Thank you so much for your research. I am grateful for the amazing amount of information you were variable to Uncover.

 I have a few additional questions. Hopefully someone can find the answers or direct me to where I can begin my research.

 1) I am curious as to why John Anders added the name Blomqvist at his first communion. My understanding that a male would take another name while in the military. I would have thought age 15 would have been too young to do this. Would he have already been a volunteer in Bohuslän Regiment at the time of his first holy communion? Why would he be away from home and staying in Vänersborg at age 15? Could he have been attending a military or other special school in Vänersborg?

 2) Are the information sources available on line? If so how can I see them? Example GID 791.31.69300, [Älvsborg] Färgelanda, AI: 16, Catechism, from 1846 to 1850, p158 / 0, image 173 of 280

 3) The source mentions [Älvsborg] Färgelanda Is Alvsborg a village or where the source resides?

 4) How can I find more information about farm Bäckerböle in Färgelanda? Was Anders Johannsesson a worker on the farm or did he own the farm?

 Anna-Lena;
 Thank you and appreciate very much your efforts to get my graphic displayed on the forums.

1. In the 1861-1865 HFL he was a student in Vänersborg (stud. i Vänersborg), and it was not unusual for students to take a non-patronymic surname.

In the 1866-1870 HFL he was first a student in Vänersborg, changed to Volontär vid Bohusläns regemente.

A volontär was a man who intended to become an NCO or officer.

-------

2. Genline has images of the actul records, but you have to pay a subscription fee. www.genline.com

-------

3. Älsvborg is Älvsborg county, Färgelanda is the parish.

You can find county maps with parishes here http://www.gis.scb.se/atlas/RikIndAtlas1992/index_en.htm

-------

4. You can look in the household examination record mentioned above, for example GID 791.46.37900, [Älvsborg] Färgelanda, AI.19, Household examination, 1861-1865, page 34.

Bäckerböle was a farm of 3/4 mantal, that had been subdivided.

Anders Johannesson (note spelling!) was owner (Eg.) of 1/8 mantal, so it was a small farm, about the smallest possible for a real family farm.
