I am trying to find birth records for my g-g-grandparents SAMUEL OTTO JONSSON LJUNGQVIST (son of Christiana and August) and SOFIA CAROLINA NORDSTROM (daughter of Carolina and Anders).  I have seen their marriage record (1865, Hovforsamling), I have seen the parish register extracts for their daughters born in Sweden (GERDA THERESA, 1865, Adolf Fredrik (my g-grandmother)) and (EMMA SOFIA, 1868, Clara). I have seen the family listed on emigrant list from St. Nicolai 1870. I have seen the police emigrant listings for the family. The family immigrated to New York City, and lived all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. The death records in New York City of SAMUEL OTTO and SOFIA CAROLINA just give Sweden as a place of birth- None of the records I have looked at have given a specific parish of birth for them or even a county in Sweden.
My question is, how do I find the parishes of birth for SAMUEL OTTO LJUNGQVIST and SOFIA CAROLINA NORDSTROM? What records do I use? How do I find these records?
Thank you!
Victoria Boutilier

The records of the banns (lysning), which were made public from the pulpit in the bride's home parish three Sundays in a row, can have this information, at least in Stockholm.

So you should look for the lysningsböcker for Hovförsamlingen, when you look into the microfilm catalog.

Thank you. I looked at what the Morman church has for Hovforsamlingen, but they don't seem to have lysning for 1865. When I looked at the microfilm, I saw marriage records  indicating what looked like places of birth for bride and groom, but NOT for the marriages from 1865. The marriage records from 1865 just give the names of the married couple and the witnesses, and there were no other records  from 1865 on the microfilm. What do I do now?

Well, everything is not available om microfilm or fiche (yet), so it might be a good idea for you to contact the Stockholms Stadsarkiv (City archives) as they keep the original books, and ask them to do a look-up.

Their e-mail is: stadsarkivet@ssa.stockholm.se

Elisabeth: Thank you. I wrote the Stadsarkivet today.
Lena: Thanks. What is register (schedule) of population for Stockholm 1800-1870? Do you mean that he was not in Stockholm before his marriage in late 1865? What does City inner and east number 3020 mean? is that a street address?

City inner and east is part of the Old town in Stockholm. It?s not a street address. But with that number (3020) it?s easy to find the address.

Is there some kind of a map which shows where each parish district is located?
Also: would the Klara CD give me the birthplaces I am looking for, since this family lived in Klara?
Thank you.

Hello Victoria,

If they lived there 1878 to 1926 the birthplaces will show.

Otherwise I don't think there is any map showing where each parish is located in Stockholm.

I contacted the Archive in Stockholm and they said they want 400 SEK (that's about $53 US dollars) to look for the birth parishes given the exact marriage date at Hovforsamlingen September 24 1865  and banns at August 25. Is this a typical price? It seems high.

Well, I will probably be going there this week, so I will check this for you.

I am not familiar with their fee schedule, but it does seem a bit steep.

Victoria, here are the facts on your ancestors:

Hovförsamlingen Marriage records (EI:3):
The journeyman cooper Samuel Otto Jonsson Ljungqvist married miss (jungfru) Carolina Sofia Nordström on 1865 Sep.24.

Adolf Fredrik moving-in records (BIa:7, page 586):
1865 Nov.12, Ljungqvist Samuel Otto, born 1840 Feb.26 in Östra Ryd parish and his wife Carolina Sofia Nordström, born 1835 Aug.19 in Hedemora, both moved from Hovförsamlingen to Återvändsgränd 3 in Adolf Fredrik parish.

The next problem is which parish of Östra Ryd is the one where Samuel Otto was born? There are two of them, one in Stockholm county, near the city of Vaxholm, and the other one is in Östergötland county. You will have to search the birth records for both, and Samuel might have been born, not as a Ljungqvist, but as a plain Jonsson.

Hedemora is a city in Kopparberg (Dalarna) province.

Hope this helps you to trace your Swedish roots!

Wow! What a surprise was in store for me when I got back to this site today! This information is very satisfying and exciting. Thank you a million times. My suspicion is that Samuel/Otto comes from the Ostra Ryd in Stockholm county, as (according to my father) my grandmother always said that the Ljungqvists came from a town just outside of Stockholm. My father didn't know or remember the name of the town. So, I will look at those records first. Again, I can't thank you enough...
