Linnea Hendrickson

I am new to genealogy and new to this list, so please bear with me, and forgive my mistakes.

I am looking for information, specifically birth place and date, for Henrik Olsson who was born either in 1824 or 1820 in Värmland, either in Övre Ullerud parish or in Östra Ämtervik, married to Maria Nilsdotter (b. Lillsjötorp, Övre Ullerud, 2 March 1820). (Marriage record 553.30.22500, Övre Ullerud E:2, 1846). Their children were Britta, Nils, Greta, Olof, and Jonas (my grandfather - who became Pastor John Hendrickson --, b. 27 February 1860 in Sandviken, Östra Åmtervik).

I have searched through birth records and HFL files for both parishes, looking in vain for a birth record.  There is a gap from about 1821-1831 in the birth records from Övre Ullerud.  I can find no family in either place with a father Olof and a child Henrik with anything approaching the right dates.  Henrik Olson's grave marker in Stephenson, Michigan reads (1820-1897).  He emigrated to Michigan in 1885 - I haven't found any detailed emigration records yet.   Several HFL records for Henrik and Maria consistently give his birth as 1824 Övre Ullerud.

Question 1: There are a few records for which I could use help reading, and which might possibly shed some light on the mystery of Henrik's origin.  552.35.45300 Östra Åmtervik AI:11, 1848-1853 has a note in the right hand column that mentions some relationship to Anders Olsson and Christoffer Olsson - and I cannot read the rest. A variation on this same message is posted in subsequent HFL record 552.23.30400 and perhaps one other.

Question 2: There There is a Hendrik Christofferson, son of Christoffer Olsson and Lisa Henstrom, (b. 12 November 1823 in Sandviken), (552.25.15100 Östra Åmtervik births, 1818-1859, with a Lars Olsson and Greta Håkansdr., Sandviken (I think) as witnesses, perhaps?  Most of this I find very difficult to read. At first I hoped that this Hendrik was the one I am looking for (although neither name nor date were quite right), but then, in the birth record for my Henrik's daughter Greta on 23 March 1853 (552.25.25000) Christoffer Olson and Greta Hökansdotter are listed (from Nordsjö and perhaps Sandviken). For the birth of Olof on 21 November 1855 (552.25.10700), we have as witnesses (I think this is what these names are for) -  (Gifted - doesn't this mean married - why is it used here?) Henrik Christofferson and Hstru. Kjerstin Jonsdotter. This is most likely the Hendrik b. 12 November 1823 to Greta and Christoffer.  From all of this can Iinfer anything about the relationship between the family of Christoffer Olsson and that of Henrik Olsson?  There is a bit more in the next question.

Question 3: In 552.23.30400 p. 395 A1:12, 1854-1861, in the record for Hendrik Olsson there is a child Henrik, b. September 13, 1858, and unfortunately dead on 5   February 1859.  The birth record (552.25.11900) reads Sandviken torp Lars Olson and Greta Håkansdotter - mother's age 38. What follows I cannot read, but the name Greta Håkansdotter appears again.  Was this a mistake in the recording?  I kept re-checking these records wondering if this was my family.  But the mother's age, if that is what those numbers mean, is 38, that would be correct for Maria Nilsdotter. In the death record for Henrik (552.25.30500), he is written as Goss or gess (boy?) Henrik Henriksson. I'm not sure which of the illnesses beginning with B he died from, but I gather that he was 4 months 22 days old.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.  I have 7 more Swedish great-grandparents to research, so I still have much to learn and a long way to go.

Have you followed them backwards? They came 1851 from Övre Ullerud, in the Övre Ullerud moving-out records 1851 they are number 71-74 and came from Nordsjö (GOD 553.21.12600).

The family is found in the Övre Ullerud HFL AI:11B 1845-1852 page 447 (GID 553.15.56200) at Kroken, Nordsjö.

Henric Olsson's birthdate here is 1819-09-25, and his title was originally son, then gifte sonen (the married son), so his parents should be the couple at the top of the page, Olof Månsson born 1892 and Greta Håkansdotter born 1895.

I don't see Henric in the Övre Ullerud births for 1819 (GID 553.26.106800), so perhaps he was born in another parish. Maybe you can follow him and his parents backwards in the HFL books.

Olof Månsson born 1892 and Greta Håkansdotter born 1895 with children are in HFL Övre Ullerud like this:

AI:10 1840-1844 page 377 (GID 553.13.5600)

AI:9 1829-1834 page 205 (GID 553.11.68700)

AI:8 1823-29 page 192 (GID 553.10.33900), here is an unfinished entry for the family, I don't know what that can mean.

If you look in Ransäter AI:5 1820-1825, p165, GID 518.4.17000, you will find the family there and Henrik's birth is noted in the birth records of Ransäter C:4, p145, GID 518.32.11500.

The family can also be found in the previous husförhörslängd, AI:4 1810-1820 on page 162, GID 518.30.97300, but they seem to have moved to Kroken before the first child, Magnus, was born in 1817 (he is also noted in Ransäter birth records). There is no note of where they came from unfortunately. I could not find any marriage record in Ransäter nor in Övre Ullerud so one can exclude these two parishes. And since Family Search (http://www.familysearch.org) has no record of Olof Månsson, whose birth date in Ransäter AI:4 is July 3, 1792, one can reduce the search for him in a first round by excluding the parishes mentioned there.

Thank you, Bo and Lars.  Henrik Olsson, born September 25, 1819, is indeed my great grandfather!

He has been eluding me for quite awhile.
I now have even more looking to do!

I would still like to see if someone could help reading the notes on the right-hand page in these two entries:

552.35.45300 Östra Åmtervik AI:11, 1848-1853
HFL record 552.23.30400

The first, GID 552.35.45300, says Ansvaras af Anders Olsson och Christoffer Olsson i Sandviken för all kostnad o skada 51, ie the bottom line is that costs or damages most likely on the torp will be paid by Anders O and Christoffer O in Sandviken.

The second, GID 552.23.30400, has the same meaning though with a somewhat different wording: Ansvaras af Anders Olsson och Christoffer Olsson i Sandviken för all framtida kostnad o skada, for all costs and damages in the future.

Thank you! I gather that this means that Anders Olsson and Christoffer Olsson are acting as backers and perhaps references for Henrik because he is a newcomer to the parish -- they are sort of like his security deposit?

I have still not been able to trace Olof Månsson back. Would his father have been Magnus?  Also, I have been able to trace Greta Håkansdotter, Henrik Olsson's mother back through several records, especially A1:2 Ransäter,1791-1801, GID 518.28.54100.

In fact, if I've done it correctly, I have traced her all the way back through her father åka Persson, b. 1745 and mother Stina Erlandsdotter, b. 1749, to her her parnets Erland Varg, b 1724 and Britta Jonsdotter, b. 1724.

However, Håka Persson's family seems to disappear in the 1810-1820 HLF Records for Ransäter.  I wonder if the word following his name in Ransäter AI:3, 1801-1810, GID 518.29.75600 would provide any explanation?  It looks as though it begins St..  Also, the wordin front of his name? Mästare?

Oddly, I am quite sure that the Lisa Henstrom (b. 3/5/1789 in Ransäter) who married Christofer Olsson, is the sister to Greta Häkansdotter.  (GID 552.20.8400) and (552.25.15100 Östra Åmtervik. Especially since Greta is also a witness to the birth their son Carl GID 552.25.16400.  So, my question is about the name -- how did someone get a name like that?  Did her father also change his name?
