Barry Ostrom

My name is Barry Ostrom and I am attempting to contact living relatives in Sweden with the surname of Sahlbom.  The Sahlbom surname is my mother's maiden name.  I have developed a form letter to send to those addresses I have obtained.  I have done this previously and I usually get a rate of only about ten percent response.  Since there are so few Sahlboms, I would like someone to review the letter and give me any suggestions on how I can improve the response rate.  If the letter should be writtten in Swedish, since the translation from English to Swedish is sometimes difficult, I would appreciate any help here also.

Dear Barry,

As you do not know how old the persons you are sending the letters to are, I recommend that you send a Swedish version. I'll e-mail a translation to you as soon as I've finished typing it.

Best regards,
Bibi

I am looking for a relative who was a professor of English at the University of Stockholm back in the late 1950s to very early 1960s. I was just a small child then, and he used to write to me. Since the divorce of my parents in 1963, I lost all track of him, and do not even remember his name. Could there have been several professors of English at University of Stockholm then? Is there any way of looking who was on the faculty at the time? I am hoping that once I see his name, It will jog my memory. If he is still living, I would very much like to get in touch with him, and if not, I would like to find out what happened to him. Possible surnames Are Ek/Eek/Eck; Johanson/Johnson; or Peterson. Or it may be none of these. I understand what a long shot this is, especially with so little information to go on. Any one have any ideas how I might find out who was professor of english at that time?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Greatefuly and Sincerely:

Relatives in Sweden

Hello:
I am seeking descendants of my Grandfather's siblings in Sweden.  My grandfather, Frans Oskar Snäll, was born in Jersnäs, Småland, on 30 Nov 1868. His Father Clas Fredrik Snäll, was a Soldier, probably given the name Snäll by the Army.  I believe the family name may have been Fredriksson, as this is the name one of his daughters used when she emigrated to the USA. Frans Oskar had two other sisters, Selma, married name NORDVALL, and Anna, whose married name was PEARSON, or PERRSON.  Selma had one son, John Nordvall, who was living in Jonkoepping in the 1960's.  He was my father's age then, and he and his wife, Astrid, had no children.  Anna's last known address was Braddarp Parish, Farserum. Anna my have had children, since a young man from Sweden visited my cousins during the 1980's.  I unfortunately did not get to meet him, nor do I know his name.  All of my father's generation are gone now, and unfortunately, none were interested enough to maintain contact with their Swedish relatives.  I visited John and Astrid Nordvall in Jonkoepping in 1964, but lost contact thereafter.
It would be a longshot if someone were acquainted with these names or communities. Any input would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Gene Linden

Hi again Gene, according to the transcripts of church books on the webpage www.jbgf.just.nu (main address of the genealogical Society of the Jönköping area), you can also find a sister of John Nordvall, Selma Agnes Kristina whom I also found on the cd Sveriges dödbok (which is the Swedish name of it, it's in Swedish only).

Änka (25/1 1958).

If you send an e-mail to the Regional Archives in Vadstena you can ask for their bouppteckning ie estate inventories which will give the names of their closest relatives and the addresses at that time.
E-mail landsarkivet@landsarkivet-vadstena.ra.se

There are several brother and sisters of Frans Oskar in the transcripts but I didn't find Anna at this first quick glance. Of course you need to double check the finding of the transcripts with the original books, escpecially the clerical survey (husförhörslängd) which gives the full family setting.

To Ann Brit Ahlstrom and Eva Dahlberg:
Thank you very much.  This is so helpful.  I am six months late in answering your posts, but I had heart bypass surgery in December and had to put my family tree aside for a while.  Can either of you tell me if the Järsnäs Soldattorp was part of the Jönköping Artillerie regiment? I understand that the Soldattorp is merely a house provided to the soldier by the community, but I was thinking perhaps Clas Fredrik Snäll was assigned to live there because it was close to his unit of assignment. Thanks again,

Hi Gene,
The Artillery regiments were enlisted regiments (värvade regementen). It was only the Allotted regiments (indelta regementen) that used the system with rotar and soldattorp (Soldier's crofts). This system was called the Allotment System (Indelningsvedrket).

The enlisted regiments were garrisoned in the cities or at the fortresses. Andra Göta Artillery Regiment (from 1905 Smålands Artillery Regiment - A6) was garrisoned in Jönköping.
The soldiers were quartered in barracks in the city.

Thanks to all of you very much. With your help, I have found two brothers of my Grandfather, of whom I was not aware, also the document sent by Olle appears to have Klas Fredrik's home town, Nässjo, which I haven't known before.  The younger children of Klas and Anna don't appear here, nor in the Järsnäs records, so they must have moved out of the parish sometime before 1892.  This is a wonderful site, and all of you are doing a great service.  Thank you.

Thanks to Olle Elm's posting of the husförhörslängd (20 May, above) I now know that my Great-Grandfather, Klas Fredrik Snäll, was born in Nässjö on what appears to be 20 July 1844.
Would someone with access to the Nässjö CD please look up the birth records on that date to possibly discover Klas Fredrik's original family name? I know that would be preferable to search his military records, but I do not know his military unit.  I was able to find his death recorded on 8/26/1930 in the BARKERYD parish record, he was listed as a Gratialist there, which I believe to be a pensioner, but no other family members are listed in this parish database. I know that his wife, Anna Kristina (Magnidotter) Snäll died around the same time, but perhaps at a later time period than the Jönköping database covers. Thank you for your kind indulgence.

Hi Gene,
There is no Klaes Fredrik to be found born in Nässjö 1844. I looked through the books for 1840-1847 and did not find him. Booth  Klaes F and Anna Kristina are mentioned as born 1844. This can of course be right, but also wrong.
Here you can see a “picture” of the family from the husförhörslängd 1864-70. The same birthdates. Anna Kristina came from [Norra] Solberga [parish] 23/3 1866.

For your knowledge: There is no “Nässjö CD”. All the facts come from “church books on line” - Genline. (Note - “In English” in the left corner.) As you can see - I would be possible for you to sit in the US and do the research - as we do - on your computor - amazing - is it not!? The world gets smaller with internet ...

I also advise you to ask about soldier nr 80 of Jönköpings regimente and Södra Härads kompani Klaes Fredrik Snäll in Järsnäs - Put forward you question here.
Kind regards,
Olle Elm

Hi Gene,
1783 1/5 in Almesåkra parish Sune Carlsson from Packebo was married to Ingella Olofsdotter from ?. (I am not sure of the name of the place)

As you can se Sune has not yet become a soldier.
In the husförhörslängd 1789-1812, one can see Sune Farm was born 1756. Something happenes in the family around 1814 c:a. A new soldier lives in Hulutorp.

Did Sweden have conscription during the 1800's?
I notice in my Grandfather's biographical sketch in Svenskarna I Texas, Elroy Kolonien, that he had completed his beväringsplikt. If this is military service, at what age would a young man be called for service, and for what duration? Family history tells that he was 19 years old when he emigrated to Texas, and brought along his 16 year old brother, Karl Sigrid.  Evidently, Karl would not have performed his service.

Thank you Olle.  As a result of your information, I have subscribed to Genline, and have already found that Johan Magnus Hägg's wife Ullrika Larsdotter, b 1811, was the daughter of a soldier as well - Dragon Lars Fornson (or Tornson) I can't read the last name exactly.  Anyway, I find the search very rewarding.  I will look for Carl Alm as well. Looks like this family has really followed the Military.  I, myself am retired from service in the US Army.
Thanks again,

Hi Gene,

Yes, Sweden had a conscript system before the end of the Allotment System in 1901. This form of the conscript system was introduced in 1812 and was called Beväringen or Beväringsinrättningen.
You can read more about this at:
Beväringsinrättningen.
